Closed or Permanently Closed?

What is the best way to deal with the listing for a seasonal business or short event which has closed but will (probably) return at some point in the future. I put probably in parenthesis since a lot can happen from one year to the next and a business that plans to reopen may find circumstances change and they don't come back, or they return in a substantially different way or in a different place or...you get my drift.

I'll use some examples. Taste of London https://goo.gl/maps/6ThQfDYGXJr was a five day event which took place in Regents Park in Summer 2016 but the listing is still live on the Map suggesting it will be open if I turn up there at 5.30pm on Wednesday. Their website says they will return in June 2017, though if it will be to the exact same spot I guess will be up to the park authorities to decide.

This business location is clearly not open to the public, but the only option for a Local Guide is to mark it Permanently Closed, is that the correct thing to do?

Not far away in Hyde Park are two listings for, Winter Wonderland https://goo.gl/maps/Dnbsa81sZo12 and Bavarian Village https://goo.gl/maps/p47XQmqNP1G2 (Bavarian Village was a part of Winter Wonderland and they both closed on 2 January). As you can see WW is marked as Permanently Closed, but BV is still showing as an open German Restaurant. I can imagine tourists in the Spring walking across the park for a refreshing stein und bratwurst and being very disappointed to find a patch of dead grass.

Last example, Olympia Beauty https://goo.gl/maps/RjT2ESJYXnu was a two day event at the exhibition centre in 2016. They say they will return in October 2017 but there is nothing related at this location currently, the organising staff work elsewhere at an undisclosed location (somewhere outside London judging by their phone number). Should this be marked as Permanently Closed or Moved Elsewhere (or Private, I'm joking but nobody seems to know what Private is for)

Re: Closed or Permanently Closed?

Hi Philip,

Please mark these as closed. There is no option for temporarily closed on the map that is available to us.

Thanks!

Re: Closed or Permanently Closed?

Thanks @GregMcG, I wonder if it has been considered changing the wording from 'Permanently Closed' to just 'Closed'? FWIW I did mark the Bavarian Village listing but my edit was denied (NOT APPLIED in LG parlance).

It's a claimed listing, there's clearly no point repeating the edit in Maps. I have now made the edit in MapMaker where the wording is Closed not Permanently Closed) and it is pending. As an RL are you able to Approve (hopeful an RL will reach it before a regular mapper as it will become Google Moderation only if they approve it!)

Re: Closed or Permanently Closed?

Hi Philip,

Map Maker TC's have mentioned the wording numerous times, however it is up to Google to decide if they want to change it or not.

As an FYI in Map Maker while the wording is different it makes the same permanently closed banner appear on Maps.

Unfortunately I'm not a Regional Lead for the UK.

Re: Closed or Permanently Closed?

Hey @GregMcG

Another RL already picked up my Bavarian Village edit in MapMaker and approved it so that's now been successfully closed.

It's perhaps an interesting side note that I followed the correct Local Guides procedure and failed, but was able to work around this by using MM.

If you have the ear of any Google staffers maybe you could mention it as an example of a difficulty we may face come March?

Hi @GregMcG

I doubt there's anything you can do but I thought I'd give a follow up which perhaps demonstrates problems with the rule about places like festivals having listings which are then marked closed between seasons.

The Winter Wonderland link above is now dead because, after it was marked closed the feature was seemingly deleted then a new version created https://goo.gl/maps/38T9xF7mxys and marked open. I tried to mark it closed again but it is impossible either in Maps or MapMaker https://goo.gl/DzW2fU

I've tried to mark a few festival like seasonal places as closed and it's never easy, the system seems flawed regarding correct procedure with this feature type

Re: Closed or Permanently Closed?

This error has nothing to do with it's status as a festival, and should not be considered indicative of what editing of other such features will be.

This is not a new feature, it is the same feature but has been re-opened by someone.  I was able to submit an edit to close it in Maps, it is pending review.

Hmm, call me Doubting Thomas but I've a feeling it will sit as Pending in your LG contributions list forever and a day.

Many thanks for your reply, btw I referred to this LG thread in your MM Meeting Places forum thread where I had another question I posed back in November (begins at "Does the unique phone number have to be unique at this location?"). If you're able to give some guidance there it would be great
