Bank Name Change

Hi

In Kerala India , State Bank Of Travancore (SBT )is Renamed as( SIB ) State Bank of India as on 1 St April 2017 .

Is there any option for map maker to Replace the name instead of changing each and all ATM and Branch .

Re: Bank Name Change

It has previously been noted that most, if not all, of these locations are claimed.

Google does have a solution in place, and that system is the owner claiming the features and then keeping them up to date.  Changing the names in bulk would be a 5 minute task for the bank; they just need to upload a new copy of the spreadsheet they have already used to manage these with the name updated for each location.

This same system prevents edits such as you are attempting to do.  When all the locations have been verified with the owner, and then you try to change the name of a single location to something completely different, that will be detected as most likely being an inappropriate edit.

Have these locations changed their signage?  Or have they just announced that they will be changing?  If the names haven't been changed at the branches then changing the name is not appropriate at this time and might be why the bank is waiting to do the bulk upload.

Re: Bank Name Change

MapMaker is now permanently closed so will be no help.

If most of the branches are Claimed like this one https://goo.gl/maps/zMfmgQdpYny I would suggest leaving things for a while to see what happens, the company may run a bulk upload script if they manage all their listings from a Google My Business account.

Either way if the actual branches on the street still have the old name and branding it would be misleading to change their map listings just because they have a new owner.

[India] SBI Merger: Mapping the change

This post is mostly for Indian LGs, but I am sure after understanding some others may also want share their thoughts.

Six major banks (to be called as Associates hereon), across India have merged with another bank - State Bank of India (To be called SBI, hereon). (Link)

The new SBI will now have 24,000 bank branches and 59,000 ATMs located across India.

Now here are the changes that are being brought in:

  • Branding change at the bank branches and ATMs - old photos may no longer be helpful
  • About 8,000 bank branches of Associates will get a name change
  • About 1,500 bank branches of Associates would be relocated (to reach more people collectively)

This is a massive change that is being undertaken, and I feel it needs to be handled smartly in the Google Maps.

Firstly, the citizens may continue to search based on old name for quite sometime, so somewhere old legacy name should be carried and indicated on Map while still showing the new name.

Secondly, the name change process and point 1, should be done automatically by the Google team, to have consistency across the map - and completion in a timely manner. If this is not consistent, then it may create more confusion for users. (Example, say I am searching for SBBJ bank, but I find the one close to me is called SBI, but one 5 kms from me is called SBBJ - I may travel 5kms while I didn't have to.)

Thirdly, priority in photos. New photos for these locations should be shown higher. Also the main header image should be a photo taken after the change.

Fourth, Countering edits by someone who is ignorant about this change. It is possible that after the change is reflected on Map, someone may try to change the name back. Or maybe they feel that SBI branch is incorrectly placed on map and try to move it. This should be countered for this specific case.

Fifth, Merging of duplicates. Right now, because of this change, I have 4 SBI branches within 400 meters of each other. It is important to not let people merge them as duplicates.

@AradhanaB - You may be able to help with this.

(P.S.: Numbers quoted may not be accurate, but they are in correct ballpark)

Re: [India] SBI Merger: Mapping the change

Excuse me, isn't this just easy fix (compared to what they're through) for what will be one of the biggest institutions in the world?

Every branch manager of SBI should do an update of the locations he's responsible for and... [fanfare] we're done!

Plus it's in the best interest of the company to care for its customers and update its contact information the maps make part of.

Finaly I don't believe they could have done it without proper communication so after all it doesn't seem to me as an issue for LG.

Thank you

@AradhanaB also @VinayakGarg for taking initiative .

As the name change happened there may be more than one branch in same town so it is better to have a particular mention or space where branch name could be mentioned .

Thank you

Re: [India] SBI Merger: Mapping the change

@CaptainHook Yes, it is an easy fix, and I think it could be done very simply by Google itself by running a few queries. Scenarios and concerns I have listed are to ensure that actions by LG do not conflict with what is correct - because normal google algos would resist such change, as it goes against past history of names etc etc..

@AradhanaB Could you share whether a mass edit be done by Google for this?

Hi @VinayakGarg@CaptainHook@Sariga@Pea Thanks for sharing your thoughts and also explaining the scenarios that would play out now that the names of the banks have changed. At the moment I do not have a update for you, but I will share it soon after I have one. Would any of you be able to share the official link from the Bank, which has the updated list of banks and address details if you have that available.

Re: [India] SBI Merger: Mapping the change

HI

@AradhanaB

it is better to have a find and replace , like Find all name State bank of Travancore or other Merged Banks To State Bank Of India , Other wise some may put as SBI instead State Bank of India.  (new board Display as SBI) .

An option to have a enter IFSC code is better because so many places will have more than one SBI Branch so it is difficult to identify . This can be a verification process also and duplicate could be avoided .

Example I have attempted to rename the bank in my Locality but approval may take time , So if a local guide adds a new Bank it may get approval soon .So there will be duplicate places .

While reporting a Problem on Photos it is better to have a option like Old Photograph instead of wrong place .
