[RECAP] The 36 Walk Subotica

Greetings to everyone and a special greeting to @PaulPavlinovich that organized this walk on a global scale!

- RSVP here

- Meet-up announcements

The photo walk was great, although nobody showed up. Since the weather was great, it went in favor of great photos. As Paul mentioned in some of his explanations of the number 36 that is related to photography, and on how it was once recorded, it is amazing that today with a mobile phone we can make countless images and only later choose which we think are not good, that is, that are less good

First, a little about the history of this building that I thought was great for photography

History of diplomatic relations of Hungary and Serbia dates back to 21 November 1882, when they were established between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. Today, Hungary has an embassy in Belgrade and a general consulate in  Subotica, while Serbia has an embassy in Budapest and an honorary consulate in Szeged.

The two countries share 151 km of common border.

Since we are neighboring countries it is understandable why we are so connected and why is such a great influence in architecture in this city in Serbia

These are some of the photos I have chosen to exhibit and represent the richness of the architecture of this building that can be seen on every photo

Enjoy and tell which photo is best for you...

This is 36th in a row and it looks really special:

Probably the best one :-)Probably the best one 🙂

It has perfect illumination, wealth of shadows and gives a striking impression, I think this is a winning photo.

Thanks Paul for inspiration!

Re: [RECAP] The 36 Walk Subotica

Hi @Anonymous I'm sad that no-one turned up, that does happen with Meetups from time to time. Did you promote the Meetup on your socials and ask your friends and Local Guides from your city to come along? For my Walk in St Kilda (Melbourne) I've been pinging people I know who have come on previous walks so that they know about it and have the opportunity to join in. In todays busy world a fleeting glimpse here on Connect or on a social network might not be enough to excite people enough to come along.

It is a very interesting building deserving of being photographed but I think I might have taken a different approach. The idea of the 36 is for considered shots to avoid what you've posted here which are lots of images which are only a few steps apart from the same building. I hope I'm not seeming negative or unfriendly here, I mean this in a positive way. I think next time what I would do for the building is to walk back and forth, get down on the ground and if possible safely up high, look at all the different angles that you can do and consider which one of them best shows off the architecture of the building then choose that one that you've decided. A helpful way of visualising is cheesy but it works, frame the image with your hands so you can see the aspect ratio and you can see how the image will crop and what else that might be undesirable like a car or wire that might be in the frame. I think if you took all of these images and uploaded them to Maps that the spam detection robot might get you because they're all so similar. If you've got any questions please feel free to ask.

Regards Paul

Re: [RECAP] The 36 Walk Subotica

Thanks for the honest opinion @PaulPavlinovich.

Yes, I did invite some friends but nobody couldn't come, also one person that was interested to came didn't show up, probably because I held meet-up 1 week earlier than planned. Did write him on Connect but didn't get any answer.

I was afraid that I will not hit the topic and do it right since I was so busy with Local Guides Clean the World project. Sorry for that and thanks for the advices about next time when taking photos, will definitely do that in the future.

I have downloaded similar photos on Maps before and none of them were rejected even do they were similar.

Finding the perfect angle to take a photo isn't easy and some of my friends do it with ease and I can't always do that, I have a filling that my picture can only be great if I have luck and they can do it every time. Generally I love photographs but when I look at the others, especially you and others here on Connect I realize that I am not so great 😐

Do u have any tip that I can use in every day photographing?

U wrote:A helpful way of visualising is cheesy but it works, frame the image with your hands so you can see the aspect ratio" is excellent tip, will use it for sure!

Re: [RECAP] The 36 Walk Subotica

I think @Anonymous is that you're in the place that every photographer is - that moment of doubt where you wonder if what you're doing is right and lack some confidence. On a positive note, all of the images are well lit without unfortunate shadows.

Things I like to think about when framing up an image

  1. Follow the (somewhat cheesy) rule of thirds - this is where the borders of something should follow the imaginary lines dividing the frame into thirds and anything important like a person (or in the case of a building the sign or doorway) should go onto a boundary of the lines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds
  2. Consider what else is in the frame - look for anything that you don't want like - in the terms of a building I would look for things like cars, people, rubbish/trash, bright light sources, etc.
  3. Try and line up the horizontal parts of the building OR the vertical parts of the building with the side of the frame - unless you're at 90 degrees to the building you can't do both - that's just physics 🙂

There's plenty more, but this is enough for now - I don't want to overload you. The next step I would take with the images you've posted here is to view each of them full screen and consider the things I've talked about above and then pick one to be your best fit and post it here in a reply. Don't seek perfection, no-one is perfect because photography is subjective, no two people will ever agree about what is "good" - you need to decide that for yourself. When you've chosen one, include some text that describes in terms of the points above why you chose it. Then if you want, we can chat more.

It's cool that you're brave enough to ask by the way, it's a really hard thing to do. When someone else talks about your passion it's always challenging. Well done. It's very cool to have this conversation because lots of other people will read this and think, wow, now I understand.

Re: [RECAP] The 36 Walk Subotica

Thank you so much for precise advices @PaulPavlinovich ☺️.

By following your first instruction about "rule of thirds" on images above I belive this one described best of what is in this rule:

Best photoBest photo

Short explanations:

Rule of thirdsRule of thirds

The line of the beginning of the building (frontage) and the sidewalk (road)

clearly is separated at the horizontal line dividing the lower third of the photo

from the upper two-thirds.

Two main protrusions on the building, at the entrance sits at the intersection of two vertical lines, as a power pointor (crash point).

Two persons and doorway go onto a boundary of the lines.

Also there are no bright light sources in this picture!

The sky and roof fit perfectly in the upper part of the third.

Horizontal parts of the building are perfectly line up with the side of the frame.

So I believe that this picture is most suitable for all aspects you mentioned @PaulPavlinovich.

I am interested in your opinion!

Thanks immeasurably on these tips that are gold worthy!!!

Yep! You got it @Anonymous well done. I also like how this image has a clean foreground and how the white lines point towards the building. This causes your eye to travel to the back of the image which is your subject which is just right.
