Re: Dhaka international trade fair 2018

@RonneBD, thanks for tagging me to see your city’s annual International Trade Fair. We have nothing like this in the United States annually.

I strongly agree with @ErmesT and highly recommend you follow his instructions on how to write and post your wonderful and insightful photos here on Connect.

Definitely create a Google Photos album like I did for My San Francisco: Being a Local Guide for Another Local Guide post to capture the bulk of your photos in it and take the time to write a “blog”post within the album to help educate people who are not familiar with the annual Dhaka International Trade Fair

@SoniaK took the time to describe the meaning of all your photos and how important that Trade Fair is to Dhaka and to Bangladesh as a whole socially, culturally, and economically.

It is wonderful to give context, to tell a story regarding your photos. By doing this, you will draw more attention internationally for people like me who did not know Bangladesh even had this amazing International Trade Fair every year, and to make me curious enough to want to see it for myself if I was thinking about visiting Bangladesh as a tourist.

However, my real concern and I don’t want you to be upset with Google or  Local Guides Connect, is you might not be familiar with the current uploading photo rule:  the maximum photo uploading limit is 1,000 photos, with no exceptions - except for Googlers and us Connect Moderators.

RonnieBD, you can easily reach your 1,000 photos upload limit the way you are currently uploading your photos.

Connect's Maximum 1,000 Photos Upload Limit Rule, with no exception given.Connect's Maximum 1,000 Photos Upload Limit Rule, with no exception given.

To provide you with more background, here’s the original Connect post link that Ermes initially started prior to becoming a Connect Moderator and how he was greatly impacted by reaching the 1,000 photos upload limit himself.

Cheers,

Karen

Hi @RonneBD

thanks for sharing with us this interesting post.

I would like to understand more, for this reason i am giving you some suggestion, for the reader to better read and understand what we see:

  1. add an introduction about the fair. When is possible to visit the fair (from .. to ...). How to reach the fair (by bus, by car)
  2. set the photos from big to medium
  3. add a description, or a caption, between the photos, to give to us the possibility for better understanding. you can use as a reference a post, like this one by @KarenVChin (that is featured in Connect today)
  4. Share less photos, (the ones that you think are more significants) and create an album in Google Photo with all the photo. Do you know that, with Google photo, you can also create a kind of mini Blog? I am sharing with you, as an example, this one, that is related to the post I linked to you
  5. of course, you can use as a reference also the official post: /Read Posting on Share your Photos and discoveries/ by @LuisRG

One question: what was inside the "foreign pavillon"?

Re: Dhaka international trade fair 2018

Wow @RonneBD! How I could possibly forget that it's that time of the year when the whole Dhaka city suffers from this fair mania! Is it taking place at the same venue where it does every year? The reason I am asking this is because they were supposed to move it to Purbachal to free the city from extra congested traffic.

@ErmesT, let me try answering to your queries a little, of course, Ronne would be the better person to answer as he is in town now, but I can try telling some from my little knowledge and experience in Dhaka too.

Dhaka International Trade Fair aka DITF is a fair that takes place every year in January. Every year numerous number of countries around the world takes part in this month long fair. That includes USA, UK, Japan, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and not to mention, the host country, Bangladesh too. The initial idea was to promote each country's trading items to attract the investors. But apparently it became a fair for everyone. People, especially from low budget families, eagerly wait for this fair because you get to buy a lot of new things in there at an affordable price. And the sellers also take advantage of this eagerness. They introduce new product line with attractive price. Not only that, bulk items, like furniture or electronic items or even home appliances are sold even at the regular stores at a discounted price, to mark the fair. It is like a festival. Their official website can tell you more about it. And some more information are found in wikipedia too.

"One question: what was inside the "foreign pavillon"?"

Foreign or international pavilion is the place where the sellers from other countries showcase and sell their products. And trust me, nobody does better business there more than Indian and Pakistani stores. Girls in our country loooooove buying the dress materials, jewelry accessories, and warm clothes. Malaysian, Bhutanese and Nepali stores mostly sell food items, like sauce, canned food, pickles etc. And some US stores are loved because of their cosmetics. Every single thing is sold here like hotcake. Sometimes I wonder, why people get so crazy about the fair! Then I realize that it's the best hangout place for middle class people for family entertainment at a reasonable cost. The fair entry fee is as low as Tk 20. Which is less than $3. And it's like a carnival. What I hated about the fair all the time was, the terrible traffic for the whole month during the fair. It took me more than an hour to reach work or coming back all the time even on a bike and the distance was less than 7km.

But well, DITF gets my countrymen earn some extra money from their small businesses and that brings smile to thousands of people out there. It means a lot. 🙂

Re: Dhaka international trade fair 2018

Thanks @SoniaK

For your clear answer. Wow, this is something that I love, even if I agree with you that this kind of events should be moved outside, in an accessible place, to not increase the traffic in a big city like Dhaka. We had a similar experience few years ago for Milano expo, fortunately the expo was far away from the city, but the price that Milan payed on therm of traffic was very high

Thanks again to @RonneBD too

Re: Dhaka international trade fair 2018

@ErmesT, I used to love the fair too. Not for shopping, but to see people. I love watching people and their activities. And of course, to eat. I am a foodie, remember? But I am not visiting the fair for last 3 years, even though it's only 30 mins walk from my house, because of the over crowded area, the dust, the pollution and not to mention, the uncontrollable traffic. Sadly, even the most educated people also lose their sense of traffic when they visit the fair. Sometimes I feel like opening a finishing school in Dhaka, where I could teach people how to behave on a clumsy day.

But yes, if you go there, you will find a lot of subject for photography, a lot of unhealthy yet spicy and tasty food or munchies and countless scopes to laugh. I love them all. 🙂
