Why is my edit status “Pending” or “Not Applied”?

Local Guides submit edits on Google Maps to ensure their communities are accurately represented. After you add an edit to Google Maps, it’s reviewed by either local operators, an automated system, or both to ensure the information is accurate and follows our guidelines.

If your edit is Pending, that means we’re still reviewing it. We may need additional information to verify that your edit is accurate. It may take some time for us to gather that information and for fellow Local Guides to use the Check the facts feature on Google Maps to confirm the information you shared is correct.

If your edit is Not Applied, that means we were unable to confidently verify the information you shared at this time.

We hope this doesn’t discourage you from being an active Local Guide. We appreciate all of your efforts to help make the world easier to navigate for millions of people around the world.

Hi @Subhadeep1,

I've removed the home address from your comment, because we value everyone's privacy. Sharing yours or other people's private information on a public platform like Connect is not encouraged.

You can set your home and work address, but you can't add the address of a private home on Google Maps.

Hope this helps!

Back to the same track... Today AGAIN as if I lost (almost) all trust from Google's point of view...

As I'm someone not to be trusted - EVERY single edit ends up either on review or gets instantly denied... Not even capitalization changes, and even less full name changes...
I stand corrected, meanwhile some of the edits got approved, but still - someone marks church as museum and names it church ..., but when I correct it I got a denial. When I tried to apply the name change I got an instant denial... And that is one more complicated object, but it happens today on almost all objects I tried to edit.

I sometimes get sick of frustration when I hit the wall of stupid AI or un-informed, ignorant moderators... and for what...

And please... don't dare to point me to the First post until Google posts back clear and concise set of "Editing guidelines" and a direct feedback procedure for irregular and spammed objects that are locked for editing!

@DeniGu

Dear Deni,

Every edit you suggest to Google goes through a review process, after the information is found to be authentic it is given a clearance from Google's side. So, till the time the information is being checked and people are working on it, the status says 'pending' that means a decision has to be made on it. If the edit is not found to be a genuine one it is categorized as "Not Applied" else, you can see an "Approved" written if the edit is taken to records and you get points for that.

Hope I have clarified your doubt, you can write back in case of any confusion.

thanks.

I've been adding EV charging spots to our province here in Canada - a while back it used to let me add these places but now I just always get an instant "not applied" for a place I know exists. I've tried to wait for a few weeks and try again, still no go.

I realize Google is trying to stop spam but this is pretty discouraging to the point I've pretty much given up trying to add places.

@Flash Unfortunately I think this thread is expression of resentment for Google's deaf ears and lack of acknowledgement for the community of good will supporters...

1. Google should set ground rules more firmly, put it in writing.

2. I know AI decides (mostly) about edits, but if someone questions AI's decisions some level/some path of moderation should be there to correct AI's decisions and maybe even improve it with time...

samething happening with me concering the "Not Applied". However the info that i input is correct.

As mentioned here @KareemKawtharani the edit couldn't be verified by Google Maps. It's the common issue the Local Guide generally face. All we can do is just move on 🙂

Who reviews "Map errors" when you send a report? I would love to provide as much accurate information as well as match the expectations of who is reviewing map errors. When it comes to streets or addresses, I try to link directly to the respective county's Property Appraiser or GIS. I wish this method after getting a "Not Applied" from a reported map error explained what the exact issue was beyond "we could not verify the proposed edits"

Maybe even getting a perspective from the Google Maps team on what they see when they review reported map errors would help see the other side of this service. I'm just not liking the auto "Not Applied" edits I make when the information is perfectly able to be verified.

Hello @AngieYC,

It appears that replies to individual posts are disabled in this post/thread. Is that accurate?

As the quote feature has been disabled since the new upgrade of the LGConnect Forum (ver 2.0) IMNHO this makes following replies in a thread far more difficult.  (My cent-cent worth.)

If you know offhand the appropriate place for me to suggest quoting be returned, please give me a pointer.  If not I'll gladly search my way through the forum to find the proper place (I don't wanna add *more* to your plate 😉

@rodvelawrote "this thread does not solve my problem. There seams to be a block on my account, and i would like to know why."

Hi rodvela,

As your original post was merged into this thread your question was lost. Presuming the question was the same as what you (re)posted above, I would say it's unlikely you have been blocked.  For example, if a user's account was blocked for spamming, they would not be able to make *any* edits, and they would, AFAIK, also be banned from the Local Guides forum.  Thus the only way such a user could post anything in LG would be to create a new LG user account -- something that is prohibited by the TOS.  The fact that you are posting from your Level 7 LG account tells me that you haven't been banned from LG.

FWIW, I have noticed several posts over the past few days with the complaint/question that their edits are, all of a sudden, no longer being approved.  Said differently, it appears that the users "trust score" has dropped.  My experience is this apparent change in trust-level seems to happen to mappers every once-in-a-while.  It seems to self-correct after a short period of time.  I also read that there was a recent change/upgrade to Maps -- although I don't have any specifics about that other than to mention it as it could (emphasis, could) be a contributing factor to a change in the trust level score. <-- To be clear, that is 100% speculation on my part ; )

That said, presuming your underlying question has to do with an edit(s) not being approved, in order to provide other than general answers and comments, as @Flash has said many times in this and other threads, we need specific examples in order to try to see what may be happening.  Can you post a few screenshots of the auto-confirmation emails from some recent edits that have been denied so we can see what the actual edits were? Along with the screenshot do feel free to provide any information that may be helpful to understand the edit.  Be sure to exclude any personal information from the screenshot such as an email address.

If your underlying question did not concern edits, please explain the issue you are dealing with.

Thank you.

Hello @MapWrangler,

Thank you for your help by giving a very detailed explanation for @rodvela. Just for additional information, when some post was merged into another thread, that post won't be gone. It's just got listed randomly in the thread.

It is true that replying to individual post in the help desk section is not available, and you can suggest this in the idea exchange section. Then, other Local Guides can vote on your idea, ask questions, and offer suggestions. Popular ideas will be reviewed by Googlers and taken into consideration.

Quote feature was intentionally removed from the new Connect as it was often misused. This idea had been suggested in idea exchange before and already got an answer to it. You can read more about this idea here

Level 8

I am sorry to say that the above, simplified post is somewhat misleading.

It says:
"...If your edit is Not Applied, that means we were unable to confidently verify the information you shared at this time. We hope this doesn’t discourage you from being an active Local Guide..."

Most people probably read this as "Sorry, Google is not able to verify your effort, but please keep contributing to Maps”. Many Local Guides will tell you to not take it personally and move on.

But wait a minute, perhaps there is something wrong with the information you shared and the “Not Applied” response offers, in fact, a learning opportunity to improve your mapping skills? [Action: Learn and Improve]

If our main objective is to improve the quality of data on Maps, it would make no sense to automatically give up on a desirable edit after the negative response by Google. For example, when Google has conflicting information when verifying our edit and thus not (yet) have the confidence to implement our edit suggestion, it might be necessary to do something about the conflicting information. [Action: Refocus]

When we ourselves lack the trust score, for Google to confidently accept our edit, it makes sense to bring the desirable edit to the attention of other map editors. Perhaps one with a higher trust score. [Action: Delegate/ Pass on]

The “at this time” phrase of the official response, should also be read in different ways:

First, going back to the data available to Google to make the verification, we all hope that Google should be able to confidently accept our edit suggestion, once they have more information available upon which to make the decision. [Action: Revisit]

Secondly, we should remember that the technology behind Maps, is a work in progress. For example, the algorithms in place that evaluate our contributions are (currently) far from perfect. So, when we read that Google is unable to verify our contribution, in some cases we are ALSO talking about a lack of competence of the system that Google has implemented to evaluate our contribution correctly. [Action: Give Feedback]

This might include some of those pending edits, where the Maps system bases the decision on feedback from non-googlers via Check the Facts. Crowdsourced using people that often are not aware of the Mapping rules/ guidelines.

So, the phrase “we were unable” in the above official response, should also be looked at in different ways. I am sorry to say, that it is this part, that is probably the biggest source of frustration for serious map editors.

“I am sorry to say, that it is this part, that is probably the biggest source of frustration for serious map editors.”

It is, of course, very frustrating (if not infuriating) when you are an advanced mapper who did educate him/herself about the mapping rules when “the Google Maps System” is doing a (from our perspective) terrible job. [Action: Give Feedback]

We are often reminded that the Google Maps world would be a different place when all people would be trustworthy (read: no spammers) and educated (read: no poor contributions). We are also reminded that there are more than 50 million contributors and that Google is simply not in the position (read: unable) to look at each wrongfully denied edit (aka false positives).

What saddens me though, is that some hard-working Local Guides feel that their call for attention falls on deaf ears, when there are also learning opportunities for Google Maps (read: opportunities to improve the imperfect systems).

Going back to the original reason why I started writing this response: there are different reasons why the official statement is somewhat misleading.

The statement implies that the system only accepts those edits/ contributions where it is confident and able to verify your information. After all, we receive those “Not Applied” responses when it cannot do so. But we all (should) know that when we receive the “Approved” response that it does NOT mean that Google could confidently verify that the data provided was correct. We could still be wrong! After all, that is how poor data ends up on the map.

The mall practice to change the information provided of a previously “Not Approved” contribution, to a (workaround) poor contribution to simply get it on the map…is contra-productive. Sadly, it seems that people take a positive response from the verification process as a confirmation that they did something the right way.

My Conclusion:

1) The verification process is complicated with lots of room for improvement.
2) There is not one simple canned answer that is helpful to all the Local Guides that wonder why they received a “Not Applied” response.

Those Local Guides that come to this forum (LGC) to educate themselves to prevent or understand the “Not Applied” response OR come here to provide Google with feedback regarding the verification system, are being done a disservice if/when the only answer they receive is the above formal statement.

Hey @Aafse1417h,

@JeroenM that is a perfect explanation of the “Not Approved” problem and of THIS thead problem.

@FelipePK says "I just want to let you know that every edit submitted to Google Maps is either reviewed by an automated systems" which is correct, but is improbable that every single edit on maps made by a 7 star contributor as me, would be wrong or non verifiable, so it is very likely that it is something else (like a ban on my account)

There is not a single contribution applied since I added a place called SUPERGA in Lima, Perú three months ago, since that, i have tried to make modifications, move wrong place markers, delete duplicates, add new places, mark non existing places, ALL of the in my city, in my working area, and EVERY single one of the was “Not Approved” after seconds of being posted.

So, as @MapWrangler ask me on his/her replay, i am sending several screenshots

I just made a modification of the name of a store i am looking at in this very moment, which i am 100% certain is it wrong on maps, and you will see it is maked as “Not Approved”, please see the time on the upper right corner.

I have even tried to mark it as duplicate since there is other LA SANAHORIA place on maps just above the wrong one, and tried to move the LA SANAHORIA place to the correct place, but all of those changes have been mark as “Not Approved”

Kind regards to all of you

DUPLICATES

1.  As you mentioned, this is a duplicate -- although not an exact duplicate, but a Googler (and maybe even a bot) would know they are close enough.  The difficulty lies in knowing which listing is correct and, additionally is the information in the "chosen" correct listing totally correct, or does that need to be improved by edits as well?

The way duplicates are edited seems to widely differ around the world -- and even within the same country/area.  What I was taught/learned is that a duplicate is never deleted, as both listings contain valuable (hidden) data about that listing that Google doesn't want to lose.  Instead, one listing is marked/edited as a duplicate of another, and a Googler will merge the data from both listings into one, and then remove the duplicate.

Although not clearly spelled out, the listing that is marked as a duplicate is the one to (eventually) be removed by a Googler.  When there are 3 or 4 or more listings for the same feature/POI/business, all of the duplicates are marked as a Duplicate, leaving 1 listing as the "selected" listing that is to remain after the data from all of the duplicates is merged and the duplicate listings removed.

I did see, I think in the discontinued "Mapping Your World" subforum of the old (ver 1.0) Local Guides Connect Forum, a pop-up screen when editing a duplicate that asked, "Which listing do you want to keep?"  I think, but don't recall for sure that screen appeared for a mapper in one of the Scandinavian countries -- and I was excited as I thought (1) this would be a huge improvement over the current system and (2) that this feature would soon be rolled out to everyone.  Unfortunately, I've not heard or seen a peep since then --which was months ago, if not a year +.

Variants on the duplicate identification and removal I have seen or heard about are some folks mark both listings as duplicates, I guess letting the Googler try to figure out which listing is the "true listing to keep".  And some mappers just delete the duplicate.

Google My Business (GMB) has extensive help pages available on "Dealing with Duplicate Listings" as well as support in merging the data and removal of the duplicate.  GMB support is only available to those business owners who have a claimed (verified) listing through GMB (and of course, only in countries where GMB is available).   However, if a mapper has difficulty in getting a claimed duplicate business listing either marked as a duplicate or ultimately removed they can post complete information on both/all of the listings in one of the dedicated GMB forums, and a GMB expert will contact the owner and work to get the duplicate(s) removed.

FYI, my own recent experience with duplicates is less than ideal.  Since the demise of Map Maker, duplicates don't seem to be on Google's radar. Since May 1, 2018, I have marked 186 POIs as a duplicate. 18 of those have been cleared. Such results are likely not encouraging to a new mapper trying to make a better map.  Interestingly, it does appear that duplicates marked in Australia have processed quickly -- just a personal observation, not a lot of data to support it ; )

NAME (& CATEGORY)
Two of the most important data points in a listing are Category and Name.  It would seem likely (to me) that Google would have stricter tolerances for edits/changes to the name and/or category than they might for say changes to hours. In the case of this particular edit, the names are different -- which may be working against you in marking it as a duplicate.

It's important to note that I don't know that different (spellings) of names and/or addresses is enough to deny having the POI marked as a duplicate -- after all duplicate listings by their very nature are "incorrect/wrong" -- it would make sense that information contained in a duplicate listing would be less than perfect.  But then, one of the most important things I've learned about mapping is that mapping is not intuitive.  Ultimately the Rules of the Map make sense -- with a deeper understanding of how mapping works -- but the "next step" often isn't what I might initially "think" it would/should be ; )

ADDRESS
@rodvela, do you know which of the two addresses is correct/more correct?  And of the selected listing to keep are there any corrections necessary to that address to make it 100% correct?

PIN LOCATION
@rodvela,  (1) do you know which pin location is correct?  Presuming one of the locations is correct, is the POI you want to keep in the correct location?  (2) In your edit (screenshot) to the name, do you know that the address is 100% correct as well as the pin location?

GOOGLE SEARCH
In doing a search for La Sanahoria, which is the correct spelling of the business based on signage in photos of the business, I noticed that Google asked if I meant to search for La zanahoria.  Usually, in my experience, Google knows the correct spelling and offers the suggested (usually correct) spelling to the user.  That said,  I'm not familiar with the language or the area which could affect the suggested spelling, however, I thought I'd point out the reference for what is the incorrect spelling of this business name.  (I haven't been able to replicate this result, even after clearing the cache)

OTHER LISTINGS / LOCATIONS

I did locate two other locations/listings for what I presume is the same chain of stores:

La Sanahoria
Jirón Centenario 195, Lima 15063, Peru
https://goo.gl/maps/MF14sXkfypN2
Category: Natural Foods Store
+51 1 2499488
Claimed business • Website (Facebook) • Hours

La Sanahoria
Calle Miguel Dasso 101, San Isidro 15073, Peru
https://goo.gl/maps/HYeAEoNkee42
Category: Natural Foods Store
+51 1 2211577
Claimed business • Website (Facebook) • Hours

What's most important about these two listings is that they are both claimed/verified listings, whereas the two duplicates in the screenshots are not claimed.

While a claimed business does not prevent a mapper from correcting bad information via an edit, it can make the approval of the edit take longer, as depending on the mapper/user's "trust score" it is more likely go to Pending Review than be immediately approved. Even if the user edit is immediately approved (or approved at some later time), notification of the change is sent to the owner of the claimed business who has the opportunity to (easily) deny the change.  This notification of a change to the listing is one of the significant benefits to a business owner of having claimed their business.

That said, the fact the other two listings are not claimed "ought" to make edits to those "easier" -- however Google (bots) are (I think) aware of the other claimed listings with the same name, and that may (likely) affect the scrutiny and approval by the bots.

Which, @rodvela, brings us back to NAMES and the scrutiny (I think) changes to names receives.

For clarity, and to sum up ; ) I don't see anything wrong with the edit(s) you have made to the name. However, without knowing more about the other two claimed locations (and if they are all related or not) I can "understand" why there could be difficulty in getting your edit approved.  And as it is a change to the NAME (in this situation with claimed listings) I can understand why the edit would be NOT APPLIED.

Of equal importance is the difference in the CATEGORY between the edits in the screenshots ("Grocery Store" ) and the two additional listings ("Natural Foods Store").  While I am 100% guessing at this, if all of the 3 listings are related, with one location unclaimed, the combination of (1) claimed listing (2) different name and (3) different category could be enough to make approval of edits very challenging.

@rodvela, there are different approaches to take depending upon the relationship of the claimed listings.  Let me know what you find out -- and are there other locations of this business?

I am, however, more concerned with the steady stream of denials you have been receiving. To that end can you upload a screenshot(s) of a different edit you made that was Not Applied?  Perhaps an edit with (apparently) a single issue (or two)  ; )  ; )

Please (all) feel free to ask questions, and I look forward to corrections/improvements to these comments from more experienced mappers.

As the quote feature has been disabled on this forum, and as this thread covers many posts/topics, if you do ask a question or comment, please manually quote the part of this l-o-n-g post (even by just using italics for the part  you are referring to) such  that users can more easily follow the comment.  ; )

Hello @Tipusultaan,

It is true what @Priyanshusingh and @JanVanHaver had mentioned that it needs time and process in order for your edit to be applied.

Since there has been an ongoing thread about this topic, I will merge your post in the Why is my edit status “Pending” or “Not Applied”? thread.

Please keep in mind that idea exchange is a place on Connect for Local Guides to share their feedback and ideas with our team to tell us about a way to improve the Local Guides program.

@MapWrangler I'm doing some catch up reading this weekend, and just came across your comment about the 'quote' button missing in Connect 2.0.

Have you found the Idea submitted by LucioV already? It already has 19 votes, and a comment from TraciC as to why it was removed.

[Edit: I noticed too late that a link was already provided in later posts...]

@MapWrangler some comments to your long post (with quotes in italic)

>> pop-up screen when editing a duplicate that asked, "Which listing do you want to keep?

When I now indicate a duplicate (on Android version 8.1 - Google Maps 10.1.1), there is a usually pop up that lists one or several POIs asking me 'Is this the correct one?'; it then also includes a 'none of the above' option. Sometimes the pop up is not there, though.

>> do you know which of the two addresses is correct/more correct

I would say the address for the one with captial S is the correct one; it looks like postal codes are written behind the city name in Peru, so the one with z simply has the postal code repeated as street name.

>> Google asked if I meant to search for La zanahoria

I'm also not speaking Spanish, but it looks to me that this search suggestion stems from the fact that 'zanahoria' is an existing word in Spanish (carrot); perhaps this store made some kind of varation to an existing word to stand out - you could compare it to an English shop that would choose as name 'Karrot'

Hello @JanVanHaver,

>> there is a usually pop up that lists one or several POIs asking me 'Is this the correct one?'

I thought that might have been you ; )  As I recall you posted a screenshot as well.

I saw the repeated postal code as well -- figure @rodvela will fix it as he is local.

>> that 'zanahoria' is an existing word in Spanish (carrot);

That's helpful to know -- and does help explain the Google suggestion -- I loved your example of "Karrot" shop.

same problem here, in Hungary!

or if there is a previously added place, why cannot is see it?

at this house number should be a place called Béla bar (https://www.google.hu/maps/place/Budapest,+Bart%C3%B3k+B%C3%A9la+%C3%BAt+23,+1114/@47.4804282,19.050...)

Hello @JedR,

The Idea Exchange is where Local Guides can submit ideas for improvement as described in this post which describes how to best use this area. The most popular pieces of feedback are shared directly with the product teams on a regular basis.

By the way I am going to move your post to Why is my edit status “Pending” or “Not Applied”?.

@Ivi_Ge yup. That is my idea. To create a notification that will inform us the reason why out edit was not applied. As of this moment, we are not receiving any notification when we edit. I'm aware of some reasons why some edits are automatically rejected by the system.  @@@@@ Rodrigo informed me on the private board some of the reasons and helped on applying some edit. I already talked about this idea with Rebecca on Connect Live 2017 in San Francisco. I just want to write it here so other people can vote. I hope you understand my idea
