Why be a Local Guide?

There are millions of Local Guides around the world who share reviews, photos, and knowledge on Google Maps. Doing this helps others find great local places, supports small businesses, and can even make it easier for people to get vital information. (Think about the importance of knowing whether a place is wheelchair accessible or the hours of operation for a nearby clinic.)

There are many reasons why Local Guides contribute, but whether you love to review vegetarian restaurants or add missing info, you can make a huge impact on a global scale. By sharing your knowledge on Google Maps, you’re telling your story and having it seen by people all around the world. Being a Local Guide could also lead to being featured in a Local Guides video or getting an invitation to Google-hosted Local Guides events like last year’s Summit or this year’s Connect Live. If you have a story you want to tell on camera, tell us about it using this casting form.

In addition to helping others, connecting with like-minded Local Guides, and getting your stories told, your contributions could also get you rewards. As a special surprise, rewards may be offered from time to time to say “thanks!” for being a Local Guide. Recent rewards include a digital subscription to The New York Times, free movie tickets from Atom, and discounted redBus tickets.

Didn’t get a reward? The Local Guides program is constantly evolving, and so are rewards. We are always looking to offer more rewards to more Local Guides, so be sure your email preferences have rewards emails enabled by visiting your Local Guides home.

If you have a suggested partner, or a reward you would like to see offered in your area, we welcome your feedback in the comments below.

Hi Everyone,

This is Abrar Ahmad from Dubai, UAE. I am a level 8 Google Local Guide. I have been volunteerly contributing to  Google Maps since last fours years. Initially I did it as a hobby but now it’s a passion of my life. Because, I always had a dream to help people and it came true with the Google Maps where millions of people are getting help from my contributions to find their required routes and destinations and to get authentic informations about the places what they are looking for.

I love traveling, meeting new people and exploring various cultures and places around the world. During my travel I have always been getting help from Google Maps and also trying to update the map by adding missing informations about the places. I love to take pictures of the place and share it on the map and review my experience with the services and facilities provided at the place I visit.

I would like to hear from other local guides from around the world about their interests and experiences.

Thanks

Abrar

I agree with you it has become hobby and passion for me as well. I got involved in this program because it was useful to me in the past when looking for a place and recommendation about it. The reviews and photos posted on that place made me to make an informed decision and helped me in my course. I thought to myself to return the goodwill since I share the same passion for taking photos and writing reviews :)!

Being a local guide is a beautiful experience, because one can help other people around their environment and the world.

One of the things that I liked most about being part of this good google project is that it allows people to share their photos and comments in a free and objective way. It is also satisfying to know that our photos help others to reach the places they do not know, it is also important to use this tool because in countries like mine, where there are very dangerous areas and one needs to reach the specific place without deviating from the route.

And you, why do you like to be localguide?

My name: Rodolfo Otero

My country: El Salvador, La Libertad

My date: 24

About me: Computer engineering student, writer, I love listening to music all the time and my experience in localguides has been, so far excellent.

Hi @Rodolfo_Otero Welcome to Local Guides Connect.

Nice sharing @TraciC 😄

For me, there is no reason to be a Local Guide, but to help others through Google Maps.

Have you ever heard about passive income theory by Robert T Kiyosaki? Do a little investment, then money will come to you continously.

In Google Maps, we 'invest' a little contribution, and we will earn everlasting happiness because of many people will helped by our past contribution 🙂

Level 10

Local Guide Connect is a platform to make us known each other.

That will improve the relation helping the people in need, say a person in need of special treatment in a location.

The volunteers can play the role even by sending information to the authorities about a mishap in an unfamiliar area.

I want you too to discuss about this.

I will try to explain my thoughts:

1) because it's fun

2) because it's useful

3) because you could be a local guide wherever and whenever you want

4) because you can take 3-4 months of vacation without any advice 😄

5) because is addictive, and push you out of your comfort zone

6) because could improve your photography skills

7) because will help you to see the world with different eyes

😎 because you will visit countries like a local, with the global Local Guides friendship

More to come 🙂
