Editor’s note: Connect Live applications are now closed as of 8:00 pm GMT on March 30.

Connect Live application time is almost upon us and we’re excited to share some tips for making your application the best it can be.

The event will give some of our most inspiring Local Guides the chance to share tips with others and meet the people behind their favorite features. Applications will open on March 2 and a required part of the process is sharing a post here on Connect to help us (and other Local Guides) get to know you.

This year, we have two prompts for you to choose from:

  • What's the most interesting thing you've done as a Local Guide?
  • What does the Local Guides program mean to you?

If prompt one (“What's the most interesting thing you've done as a Local Guide?”) appeals to you, perhaps this is where you share how you’ve made an impact through the lists you’ve created on Google Maps. Or, perhaps how you’ve edited and added places which have been super impactful to others, like @brittym's example response to this prompt.

If “What does the Local Guides program mean to you?” feels easier to talk about, tell us all about it. This could be where you share how the program has enabled you to hone your photography skills or find the confidence to make friends across the globe through Connect. Here’s an example of a response to this prompt.

We picked these two prompts because whether you’re a long-time member or new to the community, everyone has a great story to tell about their Local Guides experience. Please note that you should only answer one prompt.

Now for those tips:

Lead with an interesting title

Your title should describe what your post is about, but it should also inspire readers to click. For example, the title “Why I love to review art museums” is much more attention-grabbing than the title “About me.”

Write a substantial story

We truly want to hear what you have to say, so feel free to write a few paragraphs. We don’t have strict word count requirements for the application, but we want to read more than a few sentences. For reference, we typically aim for a minimum of 300 words when writing Connect posts.

Compose in English

Although Connect supports several languages, your Connect Live application post should be written in English. Failing to do so can result in disqualification.

Share those details

Instead of just writing that the program means being the top 1% of Local Guides in your area month after month, tell us why this matters. Are you a local celebrity? Do you love knowing how many people you’ve helped? Explain it in your post.

Include at least one great photo

Photos help tell your story and we would love to see you include an image that is relevant. Be sure to only use photos you've taken yourself and don’t forget to write captions.

Select the Local Stories topic

Both of this year’s prompts are about you and why you’re a Local Guide, so be sure to publish your post under Local Stories and link to it in your application.

Interested in applying? On March 2, our official Connect Live 2020 applications will open and in the meantime, you can visit this post to prepare your application.
