How to identify and report fraud on Google Maps

Googler

UPDATE: As of June 11, 2020, we now have a new process in place for reporting abusive activity on Google Maps. You can report entire profiles on Google Maps from your mobile device. Read this post to learn more.

Have you ever come across a place on Google Maps that doesn’t really exist? How about a place with incorrect details that look suspicious? These edits violate the Google My Business guidelines and Local Guides guidelines, and they’re considered fraud.

People post fraud on Google Maps for the sake of profit-generating scams, which hurt legitimate businesses and make Maps less useful for everyone. You can help fight spam by reporting violations.

Maps listings with keywords in their address fieldsMaps listings with keywords in their address fields

.:: How do I identify fraud on Google Maps? Look for the following.

  • Businesses that list a P.O. Box, post office or virtual office as an address. A business needs to have a real-world address to be listed on Google Maps. Virtual offices and shared workspaces are acceptable if they’re staffed during typical business hours, but be aware that using these types of places as addresses is a popular fraud technique. P.O. Boxes are OK in countries where they are essential, such as Kenya and the U.A.E.
  • Online-only businesses. Online businesses that don’t meet customers face-to-face are not eligible to be on Maps.
  • Businesses that don’t exist. If a business is on Maps but is not real, it should be reported.
  • Businesses that use employees’ addresses. The scam here is to make it appear that the business has locations in places where it doesn’t actually operate. If you see a business that seems to be in a purely residential area, this might be the reason.
  • Keyword “stuffing.” If you see search terms “stuffed” into place names or address fields, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Fake websites or phone numbers. For example, a fraudulent hotel listing might include a hotel booking site instead of a site for an individual business. If a business’s site seems broken or distributes malware, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Business impersonators: Some people create fake listings for real businesses, such as national chains. If you think a listing might be fraudulent, check the brand’s official site to see its legitimate locations.
  • Reviews that point out abuse. Sometimes, people will notice a fraudulent listing and note it in a review.
  • Profanity. Sometimes, people will deface legitimate listings with edits that include foul language.
  • Illegal businesses: If a business is illegal where it operates, it can’t be on Google Maps.

.::How do I report fraud on Google Maps?

  1. Find the business on Google Maps
  2. Scroll down and select Suggest an edit
  3. Tap Place is permanently closed or has never existed
  4. Select Spam, fake or offensive as the reason
  5. Tap Submit

Report the listing as spam flowReport the listing as spam flow

.::Reporting a Local Guide

If you've found a Local Guide contributing content or behaving in a way that seems to violate our policies or Local Guides program rules, you now have the ability to report these profiles directly in the Google Maps app. In order to do so, click on the user name in the list of Reviews/Photos they contributed or the Question/Answer they posted to get to their profile page. Once on their profile page, click on the three dot icon. Choose ‘Report’ from the menu on iOS or ‘Report profile’ on Android. For additional information, read this post.

.::Reporting spammed, fake, or duplicate prominent locations to Google Moderators

There are certain prominent places which Local Guides can’t edit in Google Maps, such as cities, towns, rivers, natural formations, and more. If you come across a spammed, fake or duplicate location for which you cannot submit an edit or your edit is automatically rejected, let us know in a comment below. Make sure to tag a Google Moderator and provide the following details:

  • Google Maps URL of the location (Eg: https://goo.gl/maps/qAZfCWDfZzoqchHL9);
  • What’s wrong with the place? Is it spammed, fake, or duplicate?
  • Which is the wrong information? Is it the name, category, or contact information?
  • What should the correct information be? Tell us the original name of the place in English and in the local language (if applicable), the right category (Zoo, Museum, etc.), and the correct contact information (official website, address, phone number, etc.).

Level 8

Is there any way where we can stop spam peoples uploading wrong photos and videos,

<IMAGE REDACTED>

As you can see in this picture this person has uploaded all wrong photos and videos, what my idea is to create a system where more than 10 or 5 local guides complaint about a person who is uploading wrong things in Google maps and block there account.

Or anyone have any idea to stop span people who uploads wrong things in Google Maps please let us know.

Yes you are right. There must be some system to stop this type of miss leading and wrong uploads and I think Google know this is happening information and might be talking some serious actions as you suggested

Hi, @Rodrigo_P

Let me introduce myself as the owner of Batu Local Guides, and the admin in Indonesia Local Guides.

I added my home as a community center, where members of the community from Batu and other cities came to spend some time together or stay. Recently, I checked in Google Maps, many new points called Batu Local Guides and also Indonesia Local Guides. The point is that there are no reviews and photos, because it is not in the real place. I think it was made by irresponsible people and tried to mislead people who would come to our place. Some of our members even got lost far enough before we called through mobile phones and we were guided to the right path to get to where we were.

Can I get the fake place maker's identity?
Can the Local Guides team help me remove those incorrect places?

These are some of these fake places :
Batu Local Guides Base Camp
Batu Local Guides Basecamp 2
Batu Local Guides Community
Batu Local Guide
Indonesia Local Guides
Indonesia Local Guides Community

Hopefully this problem can be resolved immediately and avoid noise and mutual suspicion among our members.

Hello @MortenSI

With all respect I totally agree we should not share a person's private information but I share this picture because this person uploaded wrong videos not only the wrong videos he uploaded x videos in Google Maps.

I know sharing a person's private information is not good but sometimes you have to export person and block the accounts because he already got around 70 k views and what will other people think about this.

If I am wrong please guide me as well.

-Businesses that list a P.O. Box, post office or virtual office as an address. A business needs to have a real-world address to be listed on Google Maps.

I see this Local Guide pasting the same review for dozens and dozens of grocery stores, it's the same business, just different locations.  Is there a policy on this?  I think I'm pretty confident that this guy hasn't visited dozens of the same stores around the state and has the same identical experience, etc.  Each store has different management and what not and in reality some stores will be better run than others which would affect customer experience. Anyways, does this fit under any of these 4 categories when reporting reviews? Or is this just allowed?

lot of peoples are including wrong details in g maps.it may lead someone to missunderstanding and a lot of problems.there is best solution needed...what do you think about guyz?

I have someone that is signed up as a local guide. We terminated a friend of his and that friend is having people write totally ridiculous reviews like "blood curdling experience" "antifreeze in the yogurt" "alarmed at the absurd pricing for a minuscule amount of yogurt" "gnats flying everywhere" "manager is purposely scratching their head over the food to put dandruff in there" etc. If you read all 8, it's obvious that they were all related to the person I terminated. Not to mention that it's the 1st review for all of them, they all mention the manager, most of them are in school together and they all occurred with 36 hours of the person being terminated.  One of the reviews is from someone that signed up to be a "Local Guide". Is there anything I can do @NadyaPN to get that review removed. The more you read them, the more ridiculous they are, but if all you look at is the star rating you would just scroll right by us without stopping to read them (we went from 5 to 3.1 from those 8).

Penipuan di google mapssikap, sikap penipuan harus di beri hukum, misalnya di blokir akun webnya, dan tidak diperbolehkan untuk memberikan pelayanan posting di google maps .

Terima kasih banyak

This is harassment against one of my employees and I need this local guide removed from the local guides program and the reviews posted by this guide removed.

Hi @TraciC

They are somany people post unnecessary  content where they do not even go,or experience there service. And in order to gain more likes and views some local guides  are posting there own photos.and writing there own review which are irrelevant  to the business content. Or they may have problem with the person(personal issue) they may comment irrelevant  probably 1 star bad review.

1. How to overcome this issue.

Their are so many local guides takes pictures daily but some of them are related to content, context.

I am still learning how to take photos  to improve accuracy and truness.

If i take photo, people think and they ask us why are you taking photos.

Then we have to explain them this is so and so we are doing so and so, for community. They laugh as us by saying is this a volunteer  act.

In this situation how to over come with motivation.

Level 3

Hi,

I have come across a Local Guide who is posting several poor reviews based on people's ethnicity rather than actual experiences at the business.  How do I report such abuse.

some examples are...

...ethnic minority’s who drive their kids to school don’t have any common courtesy and ignore the road rules...

My wife got robbed in this store whilst trying on shoes for our 4 year old daughter.A native person.........

Their guards seam to have a chip on their shoulders. Most are from the Indian subcontinent and although there is a lot of educated people like doctors, scientists and professors from this region Wilson employ morons who have limited communication skills in English.

My children love riding the little three wheeled bikes around the little bike track. Unfortunately the ethnic children from South Asia (India & Pakistan) have no manners and will blatantly steal a bicycle from underneath a Caucasian child who was happily riding it.

etc etc etc.

Many of his other reviews are not even based on an actual experience at the various businesses.
