How to identify and report fraud on Google Maps

Googler

UPDATE: As of June 11, 2020, we now have a new process in place for reporting abusive activity on Google Maps. You can report entire profiles on Google Maps from your mobile device. Read this post to learn more.

Have you ever come across a place on Google Maps that doesn’t really exist? How about a place with incorrect details that look suspicious? These edits violate the Google My Business guidelines and Local Guides guidelines, and they’re considered fraud.

People post fraud on Google Maps for the sake of profit-generating scams, which hurt legitimate businesses and make Maps less useful for everyone. You can help fight spam by reporting violations.

Maps listings with keywords in their address fieldsMaps listings with keywords in their address fields

.:: How do I identify fraud on Google Maps? Look for the following.

  • Businesses that list a P.O. Box, post office or virtual office as an address. A business needs to have a real-world address to be listed on Google Maps. Virtual offices and shared workspaces are acceptable if they’re staffed during typical business hours, but be aware that using these types of places as addresses is a popular fraud technique. P.O. Boxes are OK in countries where they are essential, such as Kenya and the U.A.E.
  • Online-only businesses. Online businesses that don’t meet customers face-to-face are not eligible to be on Maps.
  • Businesses that don’t exist. If a business is on Maps but is not real, it should be reported.
  • Businesses that use employees’ addresses. The scam here is to make it appear that the business has locations in places where it doesn’t actually operate. If you see a business that seems to be in a purely residential area, this might be the reason.
  • Keyword “stuffing.” If you see search terms “stuffed” into place names or address fields, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Fake websites or phone numbers. For example, a fraudulent hotel listing might include a hotel booking site instead of a site for an individual business. If a business’s site seems broken or distributes malware, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Business impersonators: Some people create fake listings for real businesses, such as national chains. If you think a listing might be fraudulent, check the brand’s official site to see its legitimate locations.
  • Reviews that point out abuse. Sometimes, people will notice a fraudulent listing and note it in a review.
  • Profanity. Sometimes, people will deface legitimate listings with edits that include foul language.
  • Illegal businesses: If a business is illegal where it operates, it can’t be on Google Maps.

.::How do I report fraud on Google Maps?

  1. Find the business on Google Maps
  2. Scroll down and select Suggest an edit
  3. Tap Place is permanently closed or has never existed
  4. Select Spam, fake or offensive as the reason
  5. Tap Submit

Report the listing as spam flowReport the listing as spam flow

.::Reporting a Local Guide

If you've found a Local Guide contributing content or behaving in a way that seems to violate our policies or Local Guides program rules, you now have the ability to report these profiles directly in the Google Maps app. In order to do so, click on the user name in the list of Reviews/Photos they contributed or the Question/Answer they posted to get to their profile page. Once on their profile page, click on the three dot icon. Choose ‘Report’ from the menu on iOS or ‘Report profile’ on Android. For additional information, read this post.

.::Reporting spammed, fake, or duplicate prominent locations to Google Moderators

There are certain prominent places which Local Guides can’t edit in Google Maps, such as cities, towns, rivers, natural formations, and more. If you come across a spammed, fake or duplicate location for which you cannot submit an edit or your edit is automatically rejected, let us know in a comment below. Make sure to tag a Google Moderator and provide the following details:

  • Google Maps URL of the location (Eg: https://goo.gl/maps/qAZfCWDfZzoqchHL9);
  • What’s wrong with the place? Is it spammed, fake, or duplicate?
  • Which is the wrong information? Is it the name, category, or contact information?
  • What should the correct information be? Tell us the original name of the place in English and in the local language (if applicable), the right category (Zoo, Museum, etc.), and the correct contact information (official website, address, phone number, etc.).

Hi

new local guide here

i mainly signed up as there is a local guide in my area who I posting a lot of 1 star reviews saying simply ‘never been there’.  I figure I could help combat that by posting more accurate and honest reviews.  Is there a way to do something about the other reviewer ?

Hello @Kerouack, what then needs to be done is tag a Google moderator, like @GeorgesHR (so I just did that now) who will then get in touch with you with further instructions.

Hi @Kerouack,

Thanks for reaching out.

Single reviews, photos and other single contributions should be reported as described in this article - How to identify and report fraud on Google Maps.

Please go-ahead and report the review as inappropriate directly on Google Maps.

If you believe this person is spamming excessively, please do let me know.

I will move this topic to the one mentioned above.

Please consider reading this post before sending me a Private Message - Private Messages and Google Moderators

@thepicho

That sounds not too well. Google must more rigidly penalize such users. I do understand that it is sometimes hard to judge somebody if the evidence isn't that clear. However, there must be ways to do something and it can't stay the way it currently is. Because everybody could easily damage a business if he wants to...without having to fear anything from Google. If this continues the way it currently is, it might damage the whole rating system.

I would suggest opening a new thread, please tag at least two moderators. You can find them here:

Hi @thepicho

you can also write a reply in this post: How to identify and report fraud on Google Maps, in which I am asking @TsekoV to merge all this Conversation.

Are you a business owner @thepicho?

As you may know, one of the best option for a business is to join Google Mybusiness: https://www.google.com/business/. In this way, they can reply to the LG that left the review, as showed in my reply to @CraigShutterBug

Level 5

@ErmesT

I really respect you, however we have to stop only relying on answering to fakes and people who act childish or simply want to damage other peoples business. I know that replying is a good way if someone writes a real review on a business. That's legitimate and fine. However if someone just rates for points or gives hundreds of ratings in a short amount of time, replying doesn't do anything. It won't help the business owner nor would the person who did the review even care...that's something that's completely out of scope in such cases.

A owner can state that this is a fake review, but the first priority should be removing the review and not to play it down by the owner. As a first step, Google could limit for low rank users the amount of reviews in a specific time interval. This would filter out a lot of fake reviews...that's also nothing that would restrict higher level LG or normal reviewers because everything above, lets say, 20 reviews / point claiming actions a day can be seen as highly suspicious. That would be a first useful step toward more spam / fake safety. Because obviously the automatic spam filters do not work as they should or are not as rigid as they should be. If someone can post a few hundred reviews in a few hours that's totally against the system and shouldn't be possible at all.

And if someone with a voice that is heard by Google devs reads this, should recommend my suggestion directly. The current state has to change...

meh
Connect Moderator

I fully agree with you @thex but...

It is not easy to define when a review is legitimate or not, not for Google nor for us.

We know that there are also business that simply, instead to improve their activity, prefere to attack the reviewers.

@AlexanderChalkidis have a proposal here, and we invited him to write in Idea exchange.

What is your thought about this?

Level 5

@ErmesT

I know, it isn't easy to filter out users which do a small amount of reviews. That's really hard to filter out or to judge correctly. There will probably always be an amount of revenge, fake or business damaging reviews. That is something we can't completely prevent. However currently it's possible that someone writes hundreds of reviews in a time interval that's just insane. If no one reports this behaviour, the reviews will not be removed. That's the current state. The system should be at least spam save and make it more difficult to gain LG levels that fast by someone who simply exploits the system.

A first step towards business safety should be a daily limit for LGs. What numbers would be appropriate is nothing I can judge. But as a first step this would at least remove most point collectors / spammers from the system.

If someone does just a single bad review or the review count is beyond this threshold my proposed strategy doesn't help at all. I know that. There are more things that should flow into an Idea exchange which might contain other ways to target different exploits.

meh
Level 5

@ErmesT

I will write an Idea Exchange on my thoughts. TBH I do not agree with the idea of @AlexanderChalkidis, the reason for this is simple. Because the person can simply write two fake reviews and everything will be great again (for the fake reviewer).

If we want to stop something like the thing described in your link we need more sophisticated solutions e.g. is the user posting the review even an active user? How old is the account? I think about something like preventing accounts without phone number and younger than 6 months to write reviews. That would be some restriction for new users however that would also highly reduce fake account creation for multiple fake reviews. Not a perfect idea but maybe someone else does know a better approach.

meh
Level 2

Hi @ErmesT

yes...I'm business owner, and we always reply to reviews...either thanks or asking LG to contact us to correct our mistake..

Level 2

Hi @ErmesT

another solution could be to make registration for LG more accurate...I mean to check and confirm somehow that LG is a real person.

In my case the name Archeryman Archeryman is fake and the person behind cannot be real LG. Also the picture does not show the person.

Well, @thepicho

thank you for the feedback. Even if I fully understand what you say, I have to address you to Google Mybusiness Community.

Local Guides, according to the program rules, is a program for individuals only. Business activities are not allowed in here. Being a Business activity, you should not be in this program, even if I clearly understand, and I share, your feeling about spammer. But we have to fight spammer from two different side:

  • Business Owners, through the GMB community
  • Honest Local Guides through Local Guides Connect

You can exit the program here: https://maps.google.com/localguides/home/settings

Good luck for your business

Level 2

Hi @ErmesT

thx for info..

I started this discussion here as I didn't know where else to start.

I'll continue in GMB community.

Thx!

D.

Level 5

@ErmesT

As it has to be fought from two sides it is kind of versus productive to guide him to disconnect from Local Guides. As he didn't only point out his own business, he noticed an issue with another LG and not only pointed on his own business. Moreover, even if he is a business owner he also has the right as private person to be a LG. That is something that basically isn't against the guidelines as long as he doesn't do anything that conflicts the rules.

Sending people away with clear concerns won't improve the overall quality...even if he will get better help in the GMB forums...I hope you get my point ;). I don't want to be offensive but the current situation is kind of sloppy solved...from both sides...

meh
Connect Moderator

Of course I get your point @thex

I was asking this because @thepicho was explaining this (being a business) in responding to the reviews, that are the subject of this conversation.

Of course everyone is welcome to be part of the community, in a free way, and @thepicho was honestly clarifying why he is here. I am just a Local Guide like you, @thex, I cannot ban, nor I want to have the power for doing it.

We were talking about rules, and how to put more resctrictive rules / procedures for avoiding spam in review, even if putting a filter will probably reduce the freedom of some (one in a million?) LGs that write all the review when home , once per month.

I agree with rules, and this community have rules too, @thex. That's what I am pointing out

Level 5

@ErmesT

Sadly we are getting in a deep discussion here and it is completely off topic the original post. I understand the interest-conflict we have and I don't want to criticise ;). I just laid down what burned under my nails. Pointing people to quit the program because they don't know were to address the problem as Google simply failed to guide them to the right spot is imho not helping nor encouraging anyone to come back in the future. Something that can't be our interest as a community. I agree with rules and I agree with guidelines and I surprisingly read them in this case ;). He as a business owner should report his problem in GMB forums but as a LG he should here report the issue he noticed with one user harming others in the community even if he is part of them (what he did). Because he is not the only victim. Either way I'm fine if I misinterpreted the guidelines and I'm wrong with my considerations.

Filters will protect things and also restrict that's correct, but everything needs rules. Otherwise we would have anarchy and I think no one wants that. I'm pro rules because they are necessary but I also I didn't decide how this overlapping interest-conflicting experience got created between LG and GMB. Also you were not involved in this process but now we have it the way it is and have to make the best out of it ;). I could write more on this topic but somewhere has to be a line between freedom and restriction. Especially when the livelihood depends on the business affected by a LG who simply breaks rules which aren't checked. This is worth more than the freedom of people who "just" want to write their experiences. I think we all should agree with that.

I understand your position and I'm fine if you will correct mine. But I would like to leave my comment now as it is and won't respond here anymore :). We can take that to another thread if you want but it isn't the right spot here.

Hi someone changed the name of famous shopping mall "Packages Mall" to shop name "Handicrafts Gallery" which is located in this mall. If you see the reviews (20k+ reviews), all reviews are related to "Packages Mall" and not a single review related to "Handicrafts Gallery". I have tried to correct but my correction is not applied. This place should be corrected.

Hello @ErmesT,

Thank you for tagging me in this conversation.

I am going to merge this discussion in the ongoing How to identify and report fraud on Google Maps topic. Whenever a Local Guide wants to report a bad activity on Google Maps you can write a comment on this topic and tag a Google Moderator (using @ in front of their names) and we will reach back to you via a private message on how to proceed.

@thepicho If you want to report a Local Guide you can always write a comment to the above mentioned post.

I am also going to redact your post as you shared private information with the name of the profile you want to report. After tagging us in the post we will tell you how to report this Local Guide.

What is more, what @ErmesT explained is very detailed and correct and you can always follow his advice on a problem that you are facing in our community.

Аccording to the program rules, Local Guides Connect is a program for individuals only. Business activities are not allowed in here. You can participate as an individual, but not as a business or organization. If you are having a business and you want to take action through it, I advise you to address your problem to the Google Mybusiness Community.

@thex If there is any idea you would like to share with everyone and make a change for the better, I strongly advise you to take a close look to our Idea exchange board. There you can express your ideas, you can vote other Local Guides' ideas and together make those changes real.

Due to the volume of private messages Google Moderators receive, I do not read or respond to private messages. Please post publicly so others may benefit from your discussion. If you require urgent assistance, please tag a Google Moderator. Thank you!

Greenware Technologies (Pvt) Ltd, Colombo & Greenware Mobile are same. There is no such technology. Actually, it is a mobile shop, not a technology. Therefore, it's better to remove Greenware Technologies (Pvt) Ltd, Colombo, & keep Greenware Mobile, Liberty Plaza Car Park Road, Colombo which is physically exist. Greenware Technologies (Pvt) Ltd uses the same telephone number of Greenware mobile. Also, it does not have website.

There should be an option of reporting profiles that post spam/fake information on Google maps. I came across some profiles on Google maps in which everything they have posted was spam. And mostly these profiles post unrelated information in various locations. This way more such photos and posts can be taken down. After receiving the report, Google maps team can check and delete the spam/fake posts from such profile solely on their discretion. This way the spamming problem can be solved more swiftly instead of reporting single images.

Former Google Contributor

Hi @PriyankaU,

Thank you for your post.

Please note that such an option is available on Google Maps. First you can Flag a review as an inappropriate, by clicking the three dots in the right corner of the review.

Bonjour,

Level 7

The main problem that we are all discuss here - is not the root of the problem, but the consequences.

Here, everyone solves the problem of how to detect spam, how to report spam and fake accounts.

The root of the problem - is that it’s easy to register a Local Guide account.

 It is easy to create ten, twenty, hundred fake accounts. Business owners can create false accounts, write reviews and make a rating for themselves. I also learned that you can BUY google map reviews for your business: a cafe, restaurant, clinic, and so on.

I found digital agencies that advertise their services to promote on Google maps. They say that they will increase the rating and write reviews. They even sell their writing services like packages, for example: $ 143 for 25 reviews.

It is interesting that even these digital studios tell : how important it is to write positive reviews, because people are too lazy to write good ones, and your business can greatly depend on reviews on Google maps. I don’t believe in honest reviews anymore. Because business can buy accounts. Registering - should not be so accessible.

 It would also be nice to fine/block places the that bought such a rating and reviews. But the main thing is all such - registration should not be so simple and accessible, because real people who visit places with fake rating : cafes, restaurants, clinics ect - can suffer from it. Google reviews should be honest.

We are here for this!
