How to identify and report fraud on Google Maps

Googler

UPDATE: As of June 11, 2020, we now have a new process in place for reporting abusive activity on Google Maps. You can report entire profiles on Google Maps from your mobile device. Read this post to learn more.

Have you ever come across a place on Google Maps that doesn’t really exist? How about a place with incorrect details that look suspicious? These edits violate the Google My Business guidelines and Local Guides guidelines, and they’re considered fraud.

People post fraud on Google Maps for the sake of profit-generating scams, which hurt legitimate businesses and make Maps less useful for everyone. You can help fight spam by reporting violations.

Maps listings with keywords in their address fieldsMaps listings with keywords in their address fields

.:: How do I identify fraud on Google Maps? Look for the following.

  • Businesses that list a P.O. Box, post office or virtual office as an address. A business needs to have a real-world address to be listed on Google Maps. Virtual offices and shared workspaces are acceptable if they’re staffed during typical business hours, but be aware that using these types of places as addresses is a popular fraud technique. P.O. Boxes are OK in countries where they are essential, such as Kenya and the U.A.E.
  • Online-only businesses. Online businesses that don’t meet customers face-to-face are not eligible to be on Maps.
  • Businesses that don’t exist. If a business is on Maps but is not real, it should be reported.
  • Businesses that use employees’ addresses. The scam here is to make it appear that the business has locations in places where it doesn’t actually operate. If you see a business that seems to be in a purely residential area, this might be the reason.
  • Keyword “stuffing.” If you see search terms “stuffed” into place names or address fields, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Fake websites or phone numbers. For example, a fraudulent hotel listing might include a hotel booking site instead of a site for an individual business. If a business’s site seems broken or distributes malware, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Business impersonators: Some people create fake listings for real businesses, such as national chains. If you think a listing might be fraudulent, check the brand’s official site to see its legitimate locations.
  • Reviews that point out abuse. Sometimes, people will notice a fraudulent listing and note it in a review.
  • Profanity. Sometimes, people will deface legitimate listings with edits that include foul language.
  • Illegal businesses: If a business is illegal where it operates, it can’t be on Google Maps.

.::How do I report fraud on Google Maps?

  1. Find the business on Google Maps
  2. Scroll down and select Suggest an edit
  3. Tap Place is permanently closed or has never existed
  4. Select Spam, fake or offensive as the reason
  5. Tap Submit

Report the listing as spam flowReport the listing as spam flow

.::Reporting a Local Guide

If you've found a Local Guide contributing content or behaving in a way that seems to violate our policies or Local Guides program rules, you now have the ability to report these profiles directly in the Google Maps app. In order to do so, click on the user name in the list of Reviews/Photos they contributed or the Question/Answer they posted to get to their profile page. Once on their profile page, click on the three dot icon. Choose ‘Report’ from the menu on iOS or ‘Report profile’ on Android. For additional information, read this post.

.::Reporting spammed, fake, or duplicate prominent locations to Google Moderators

There are certain prominent places which Local Guides can’t edit in Google Maps, such as cities, towns, rivers, natural formations, and more. If you come across a spammed, fake or duplicate location for which you cannot submit an edit or your edit is automatically rejected, let us know in a comment below. Make sure to tag a Google Moderator and provide the following details:

  • Google Maps URL of the location (Eg: https://goo.gl/maps/qAZfCWDfZzoqchHL9);
  • What’s wrong with the place? Is it spammed, fake, or duplicate?
  • Which is the wrong information? Is it the name, category, or contact information?
  • What should the correct information be? Tell us the original name of the place in English and in the local language (if applicable), the right category (Zoo, Museum, etc.), and the correct contact information (official website, address, phone number, etc.).

@Rodrigo_P  Good Morning!

1. Explain the difference between "Virtual offices and shared workspaces" vs. POBox

2. Why doesn't the AI immediately recognize these keywords and fraudulent behaviour?

3. Why doesn't Alphabet, Google, and Google Maps assign a team of honest White Hatters to look for and identify these fraudulent behaviours?

This way the honest Local Guides can focus on the matters of reviewing and photographing without having to be concerned about plagiarism and photography Copy Rights Theft and just as egregious breaching the security protocols of our devices.

These perpetrators blatantly inhabit Connect.

I would like to report a Local Guide who appears to be selling reviews. In his 38 reviews, he appears to be a homeowner in at least six cities in Connecticut, Colorado and North Carolina, and also to be a foreign exchange student from Bulgaria and to have a husband (which of course he could, except that everything else is so obviously fraudulent.)

Thanks.

SUSAN.

A local guide posted a fake review for my company this morning.  I have never worked with, spoken with or even issued a proposal to this person.  I don't advertise my prices and the "management services” the guide mentions in the review my company does not offer.

Here is a link to the reviewers profile:

<REDACTED LINK>

I assume it is ok to post a link to his profile  publicly since he gets to post about my business publicly!

Having reviewed several of this guides other "reviews" from this morning, it appears he is leaving reviews that are fake and often not even based on his own personal experiences.  This does nothing but lessen the value of the Google review system.  Please find a way to provide incentive for guides that is NOT based on the number of reviews they provide.  Please also remove this fake review from my business.  My business is small enough that I KNOW I have never worked with this person.  If he has done business with me he should be able to prove that by showing  a receipt or completed project!!!

Also, there should be a way for business owners to review local guides.

Level 10

Hi @Albrennan please, don't share in public reviews or people, for privacy reasons.

You can report the review and flag it as inappropriate for some specific reason.

I will tag here @GeorgesHR for more support.

Hi @Albrennan

Reviews or photos that you think are inappropriate and do not belong on Google Maps, should be reported as described in this article Flag inappropriate reviews

Hi, I have come across a Level 7 Local guide who is posting advertising material randomly on every business at google maps. He just gives 3 stars and posts his advertisement as comment. How do I flag this person?

Level 10

@Vcbalaji You can refer to this post on how to report spam or a suspected spammer. https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/Help-Desk/How-Do-I-Report-Content-on-Google-Maps/m-p/202916#M3...

Basically as what you did, write a post in Connect, don't mention specific details, and tag a Google moderator.

For this case, I will just help tag @GeorgesHR @DeniGu. One of them or another Google moderator will contact you via private message for the details , and after investigation, Google will not share the results.

Thanks for helping to keep Maps clean.

Hi there, I've come across the profile of a Local Guide who I believe was abusing their reviewing capabilities. This person had a bad experience at a business in one area of my state, and then after that bad experience, seems to have searched all similar businesses in the state to leave one-star reviews at several organizations that he appears to have never frequented (doesn't leave any identifying information on the center itself, doesn't describe a personal experience, etc.). Please let me know how I can report this Local Guide for fake/spam reviews.

There is a local gym I go to called Iron Cult in Bangalore.recently we noticed that the place was removed. The owners had not claimed the listing and are unaware of any malpractises. I am trying to find out how the place got removed and if it was by a local guide. Any help in getting the place back on maps with all the photos and reviews intact will be of great help. I am not adding any links to the gym webiste as that would aount to advertising, but a quick search will get you the results.

@GeorgesHR a local guide is posting all negative reviews on businesses in the STL area - I believe its a scam to make money for deleteing the reviews.  77 reviews; all 1 star.  Please advise.

Thank you for helping in keeping Google Maps a clean place

Connect Moderator

Hi @Qudrat

can you give some more detail please. Before to give a reply, I think we need to better understand the problem:

The address where your company moved is taken by another company. Why?

  • Because this is the company that was there before?
  • Because someone decided to wrongly add a listing in the wrong address?

Is the other company existing, or is a fake business?

Responding to this questions, will give you the indication on how to report/edit the other business.

In addition, is your company already in Mybusiness?

I wish you good luck for your business

Regards

Ermes

Hi @TsekoV

This company moved before but address of this company hadn't been changed on the Google maps.

This is print screen from their official site where there are located now in reality.

[REDACTED]

October  8th I offered Google to change address of company IT Solutions on the Google maps because they had moved. I got message that my offer is under consideration. More than a month have passed since that moment when I offered about to change their address, but I didn't get a result of this process.

Thank you for the feedback @Qudrat

So you are not reporting a fraud, but simply a previous business that have not been moved away yet.

@TsekoV, can you edit the reply, removing the information about the other business?

If you have the information about the new location of the old business, you can suggest an edit, @Qudrat

You can also contact GMB community, for reporting the change in there.

Thank you

How do we report a spammer? I noticed someone asking a very generic question. When I looked at their profile, they had made 100s of random reviews in the past hour with good comments but bad ratings in cities all over the US. I'm hoping that Google will automatically detect this and delete the profile but I want to make sure as it's a definite spammer or bot. Thanks.

There is a local guide using multiple accounts to make reviews on local businesses based on a vendetta. While I appreciate they are fully entitled to make a review or give a rating, they are also naming people in the reviews and I have seen some businesses with 4 ratings of 1 star from 4 different accounts (all using the same name, bit of a giveaway).

This person has already had a challenge from one of the businesses to remove names from a review which involved local law enforcement getting involved. Can these reviews be removed or reduced to just 1?
