Connect is a place for Local Guides like you to share your experiences exploring the world, tasting new dishes, and more. However, the words and photos you share on Connect should be your own. Originality is one of our five core values, and we take copyright seriously.

Here’s a guide to posting on Connect:

  • Write original content. Share your own thoughts, impressions, insights, and experiences.

  • Do not pass off someone else’s words as your own. If you are sharing words someone else has written, use quotation marks around the statement and link to the source where you found that information.

It should be clear which words are yours and which are someone else’s.

    Example:
I’m planning to visit the Grand Canyon in March and am looking for tips on how to make the most of my trip. According to Outside Magazine, “with 358 miles of established trails, 277 miles of river to float, and countless panoramas, historic sites, and overlooks to explore, it’s hard to know where to start.” Do you have any advice?

  • If you do not use a direct quote, tell us in your own words what you read somewhere else. Do not copy and paste it without using quotes or attribution. Include a link to the source.
  • Only share photos you have taken yourself or received permission to use directly from the copyright owner. Do not download and post photos from Google Search, Google Maps, social media, stock photo websites, or elsewhere on the internet without receiving permission from the owner of that photo.
  • Give credit in the caption for images you have permission to use. In the photo caption, write, “(Courtesy of ‘Copyright Holder’s Name’).”

    Example:
“Caption: A photo of the New York City skyline. (Courtesy of Local Guide @AriMar)”

Posts with images or content used without the copyright holder’s permission will be removed from Connect.

Due to the volume of private messages Google Moderators receive, I do not read or respond to private messages. Please post publicly so others may benefit from your discussion. If you require urgent assistance, please tag a Google Moderator. Thank you!

Hi @DeniGu

Thank you for your post. It 's very important to keep copyrights here on Connect but also on Google Maps. I've found some LGs that writing "their" reviews by copy-paste content from other websites or even Wikipedia without quotation, without writing original author name and without any permissions and without keeping proper copyrights. How to report such reviews? There is no such an option under "flagging" feature. Don't you think that it should be necessary to add such an option to that tool?

Hi @AkhilGarg91,

We encourage Local Guides to share photos and content they made especially for Connect. I agree that the photos and the content are yours, but they appear in your blog, too. Also, sharing the URL to your blog in every post can be considered self promotion, which is against our Local Guides program rules.

Hi @MoniV ,

That doesn't make any sense that I cant post content from my blog (I dont know how it violates any guideline of the program). I can remove link though.

@DeniGu  I found your post incredibly useful. As a teacher, I face this problem daily; students using other people's information and material as their own. It's important to show learners from a young age what plagiarism is and provide them with the necessary guidelines to become responsible digital citizens so they can eventuallly turn into ethical local guides.

Hi @AkhilGarg91,

As mentioned before, we encourage Local Guides to post their own content, which is made especially for Connect.
The reason why some of your posts have been removed is that they have been taken as self-promotion, or copied from another source. I can see that your content is genuine and not copy-pasted from a different source. However, in order to not be taken as self-promotion (which is against Local Guides program rules too), I'd advise you to refer less to external blogs (where your full informative article is posted) and post as much original content as you can on Connect.

Due to the volume of private messages Google Moderators receive, I do not read or respond to private messages. Please post publicly so others may benefit from your discussion. If you require urgent assistance, please tag a Google Moderator . Thank you!

I have used few pictures for Local Guides Connect, which i have downloaded from Google.

And i am really not aware of it, that this is violation of rule.

I really regret for the same and i am requesting all the Local Guides, not to use downloaded or others stuff.

I am removing few pictures from Google maps also.

Thank you @LilyanaZ  for alerting and helping me to do things in right way.

This incident should be a lesson to all the Local Guides.

If this helps a single one also i will be very happy.
