There are few things more magical than seeing giant hot air balloons take to the sky at dawn, watching as they float to the horizon, becoming small, colorful dots as the sun rises. What’s slightly less magical is having to set your alarm clock for pre-dawn hours. See where Local Guides go to experience this type of stunning display without the early wake up call in our recent Google Earth Voyager story. It’s filled with photos and reviews shared by Local Guides like you.
Below are a few of our favorites.
Great Reno Balloon Race (Reno, Nevada)
Held every September, this race is free to the public. In its first year, just 20 balloons participated, but now, up to 100 balloons compete.
Local Guides say:
“One of the best free events in Reno! Catch the Glow Show and Dawn Patrol before sunrise and then watch the balloons soar when the sun comes up.” —Local Guide Kristin Prostinak
International de montgolfières de Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu (Quebec, Canada)
This internationally-known festival was founded in 1984 and hundreds of thousands of people gather for it every August. The internationally known festival also offers other amusements and tethered night flights.
“I love the hot air balloons! I have been going to the International de Montgolfieres since 1995… It is just magical with regular colored balloons filling the sky at dusk.” — Local Guides Deborah Blair
Festival de Balonismo Torres (Torres, Brazil)
The Festival de Balonismo Torres, held in Ballooning Park in May, challenges balloon pilots to a series of tests, like lowering the balloon to pick up a key held 10 meters high, while thousands look on.
(Translated) “The ballooning festival is a very beautiful event. Lots of attractions, food and fun.” — Local Guide Leonardo de Oliveira

Thanks for sharing this wonderful post. I have not personally been on a hot air balloon, nor seen one with so many up close. The colors of the balloons that fill the blue sky is just mesmerizing.

Attended the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta kickoff 10/6/2018 and it was, as always fabulous. The full 10 day event includes mass ascension events Sat/Sun weekends on either side of the week of other various balloon contests and events. One of the premier balloon events in the world and well worth making the effort to visit Albuquerque to check it out. But get your lodging set up EARLY in the year before the event. I've heard the event doubles the population of ABQ for the week.
