‘Two Bad Tourists’ give their best tips on guiding LGBT travelers

In 2012, Auston and David left their home in Chicago and set off on a one-year adventure to explore the world. Their trip took them across five continents and to more than 35 countries. That same year, they started Two Bad Tourists, a blog that helps other adventurers discover cool new places and LGBT-friendly destinations.

Unfortunately, LGBT travel information isn’t always easy to find. So, Two Bad Tourists has become a helpful online resource for LGBT travelers to learn about exciting and safe international getaways. On the blog, Auston and David share travel guides, insider tips, and beautiful photos to inspire others to book a few trips of their own.

Today, the married couple has been to 50 countries around the globe. We caught up with them to learn more about their experiences and get some advice on how Local Guides like you can help guide LGBT travelers.

Why do you love to share travel tips and guides on your blog?

We have a passion for travel and think it's important to share our experiences with LGBT travelers since there are so few resources out there that highlight travel for the LGBT community.

How do you think sharing your experiences with others has created a positive impact?

We constantly receive messages from followers thanking us for writing guides and insider tips. Many have used our guides to plan their trip and we get great feedback from readers who had an amazing time in destinations we’ve recommended.

What's the most important pieces of advice you'd give to other LGBT travelers?

People appreciate when we recommend businesses that offer products and services for the LGBT community. It's not always easy to find this info as an international visitor so we give them insights they might not have known about. The businesses then offer them a unique perspective into the local LGBT community of the destination they are visiting.

What's the best piece of travel advice you've ever received?

We can't specifically remember the best advice we've received, but the best advice we can give to is to take the advice of locals. Whether you meet a local through a dating app, Couchsurfing, an Airbnb host, Google Local Guides, or any other of the many possibilities, it's worth the effort to seek out advice from someone who lives in that destination and shares your interests. No guidebook, blog, or tourist map will ever be able to give insights into such an authentic experience.

What are some of your favorite LGBT friendly destinations?

We love small LGBT resort towns like Sitges, Spain, and Provincetown, USA. They offer such a wonderful fun and cultural experience with a huge LGBT population and tourist crowd. Not only are the destinations amazing and unique, you can truly be yourself and feel comfortable in these places as they are so accepting.

Do you have any tips for fellow travelers who are writing reviews about places to guide LGBT travelers? What are some helpful things for them to note or look out for?
Think about those places and activities that would be difficult to know about unless you're a local. Unlocking access to those will make a huge difference in a person's visit because so many activities known only by locals are simply not publicized to tourists. Sharing your experience with a visitor will give them a memorable experience they will never forget.

We hope this post inspires you to share more of your experiences on Google Maps and Connect. As a Local Guide, your reviews, lists, and photos can help people discover the best places in your area. In the comments below, tell us about a place in your neighborhood that locals love to visit.

Dear @AriMar ,

your information and promoting of LGBT 🏳️‍🌈 activities is very valuable for this community. This makes the community very meaningful and underlines the important of diversity in the world.

Thank you, also when I cannot add some content to this topic, only that Germany 🇩🇪 is worth a travel as well.
