How to identify and report fraud on Google Maps

Googler

UPDATE: As of June 11, 2020, we now have a new process in place for reporting abusive activity on Google Maps. You can report entire profiles on Google Maps from your mobile device. Read this post to learn more.

Have you ever come across a place on Google Maps that doesn’t really exist? How about a place with incorrect details that look suspicious? These edits violate the Google My Business guidelines and Local Guides guidelines, and they’re considered fraud.

People post fraud on Google Maps for the sake of profit-generating scams, which hurt legitimate businesses and make Maps less useful for everyone. You can help fight spam by reporting violations.

Maps listings with keywords in their address fieldsMaps listings with keywords in their address fields

.:: How do I identify fraud on Google Maps? Look for the following.

  • Businesses that list a P.O. Box, post office or virtual office as an address. A business needs to have a real-world address to be listed on Google Maps. Virtual offices and shared workspaces are acceptable if they’re staffed during typical business hours, but be aware that using these types of places as addresses is a popular fraud technique. P.O. Boxes are OK in countries where they are essential, such as Kenya and the U.A.E.
  • Online-only businesses. Online businesses that don’t meet customers face-to-face are not eligible to be on Maps.
  • Businesses that don’t exist. If a business is on Maps but is not real, it should be reported.
  • Businesses that use employees’ addresses. The scam here is to make it appear that the business has locations in places where it doesn’t actually operate. If you see a business that seems to be in a purely residential area, this might be the reason.
  • Keyword “stuffing.” If you see search terms “stuffed” into place names or address fields, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Fake websites or phone numbers. For example, a fraudulent hotel listing might include a hotel booking site instead of a site for an individual business. If a business’s site seems broken or distributes malware, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Business impersonators: Some people create fake listings for real businesses, such as national chains. If you think a listing might be fraudulent, check the brand’s official site to see its legitimate locations.
  • Reviews that point out abuse. Sometimes, people will notice a fraudulent listing and note it in a review.
  • Profanity. Sometimes, people will deface legitimate listings with edits that include foul language.
  • Illegal businesses: If a business is illegal where it operates, it can’t be on Google Maps.

.::How do I report fraud on Google Maps?

  1. Find the business on Google Maps
  2. Scroll down and select Suggest an edit
  3. Tap Place is permanently closed or has never existed
  4. Select Spam, fake or offensive as the reason
  5. Tap Submit

.::Reporting a Local Guide

If you've found a Local Guide contributing content or behaving in a way that seems to violate our policies or Local Guides program rules, you now have the ability to report these profiles directly in the Google Maps app. In order to do so, click on the user name in the list of Reviews/Photos they contributed or the Question/Answer they posted to get to their profile page. Once on their profile page, click on the three dot icon. Choose ‘Report’ from the menu on iOS or ‘Report profile’ on Android. For additional information, read this post.

.::Reporting spammed, fake, or duplicate prominent locations to Google Moderators

There are certain prominent places which Local Guides can’t edit in Google Maps, such as cities, towns, rivers, natural formations, and more. If you come across a spammed, fake or duplicate location for which you cannot submit an edit or your edit is automatically rejected, let us know in a comment below. Make sure to tag a Google Moderator and provide the following details:

  • Google Maps URL of the location (Eg: https://goo.gl/maps/qAZfCWDfZzoqchHL9);
  • What’s wrong with the place? Is it spammed, fake, or duplicate?
  • Which is the wrong information? Is it the name, category, or contact information?
  • What should the correct information be? Tell us the original name of the place in English and in the local language (if applicable), the right category (Zoo, Museum, etc.), and the correct contact information (official website, address, phone number, etc.).

Hi @Djohnson

Is it about a Local Guide? In this case I'll contact you briefly. Please see also this post to learn more about how to report a spam.

  • If you find a review or photo that you think violates our policies on Maps, you can use the 'flag/report as inappropriate' icon next to the contribution. A team of specialists will then check if it violates any of our policies (https://goo.gl/dsVNTC & https://goo.gl/G87xzJ) and will take appropriate action. The content review sometimes takes time as the team is careful to only remove content that violates policy. Please note that we'll never be able to share the specialists' decision as we respect everyone's privacy.

Many thanks for your help.

@NikishDDo not panic, response from google is slow as usually, and probably they will not reply after first try. And when you will receive the reply you will understand that you should email your complaints to the address from which is generally pretty rare respond, so you can just ROTFL. I think I shall be soon banned from LGC because I am criticizing the concept of vertical communication at Maps, which is from my point of view the main problem.

Level 10

Don't think it is your  responsibility to report spammers. Otherwise, your hands are too full.   Monitoring of photos, reviews, edits, etc  should  be at the source of input.   Google Maps either  accepts or rejects inputs based on their data base.  Experienced Monitors should have no problem determining relevance & authenticity to a place of interest.  .

Greetings

Reports of inconsistencies take a while to be checked, changes occur within a few days, the accuracy of your report should be unambiguous.
The system performs the changes as they are confirmed by other local guides.

good luck.

Hello,

I hope I'm doing this right. I was wanting to report a user that posts a lot of spam content. Some of his reviews are legitimate, but most of them are obviously not. Also, even if a review is legit, he has a tendency to post the same completely irrelevant photo and say "Hail, Satan." My guess is he thinks he's being funny as he often does this at churches, but I personally find it to be annoying.

I feel like I'd be spamming the mod team if I tagged them all, so I'm just going to tag the first three in the list. Please tell me if there's a better way to do this.
@TraciC, @LuisRG, @BellaWi

Thanks!

Hi @FiveDigitLP Yes you are correct this is the best way to do it by By reporting Inappropriate Content on Google Maps  and that is what you have just done. Incase of next time, just tag a single Google Moderator and they will come to you to help you out. It's weekend already and the Moderators are not available now, hopefully by Monday they would contact you on how to solve this issue. Unfortunately as well you didn't tag them well as they can't see your notification that way. So I will help you tag one. @JeslynL Please look at the way I tag as well, so that next time you can tag in similar way that they can get the notification. Best Regards and I hope your issue is ironed out accordingly.

Kind Regards,

Samson

Level 6

Thanks! I'm in no hurry as he has existed for quite some time. I went through and flagged some of his reviews and photos previously, but there's just too many to handle them all individually. Also, it seems the photos I flagged were removed, but I guess Google doesn't care about the fake reviews...

Hello @FiveDigitLP. The team takes reports of content on Google Maps seriously. Reviewing of these reports takes time as the team is careful to take action on violating content only. I have reached out to you via private message with more details on how to share such information with the team.

Hi guys,

We would like to report a massive spammer that spreads his logo all across Canada by using your Add an Image feature. He has reached 1,800+ logo of his company uploaded everywhere from our distributors to our customers and even non-related businesses. It's a total abuse has he may using a script to upload that many times and violating the Terms of the Local Guide program by uplaoding his trademark everywhere without any permission.

Hello @Alu-Rex,

First off, If you find a review or photo that you think violates our policies, you can use the 'flag as inappropriate' icon next to the contribution. A team of specialists will then check if it violates any of our policies (https://goo.gl/dsVNTChttps://goo.gl/G87xzJ) and will take appropriate action.

We don't suggest you share any users information publicly though. Please refer to this post on how to appropriately report Google Maps spam.

Also of importance, it appears your name and avatar may be of a business.  If so, this would violate the Local Guides terms of service. Please review your details and make the appropriate adjustments to your avatar and name.

I am not available to respond on the weekend

@TraciC could you help me with this?

Been a long time since I reported my spammer. He is still level 10, still posting rubbish "ok" five star reviews and still posting hundreds of photos a week.  Here are some of the examples. I have started reporting individual photos, but none have been removed that I can see.

Why, how is this allowed?

Hi @Jbautista13 and @ZekariasT

Allow me to explain better how it works reporting spam:

  • If you find a review or photo that you think violates our policies In Google Maps, you can use the 'flag/report as inappropriate' icon next to the contribution. A team of specialists will then check if it violates any of our policies (https://goo.gl/dsVNTC & https://goo.gl/G87xzJ) and will take appropriate action.
  • If it is a Local Guides, as in this case, please tag one of Google Moderator we will contact you privately (as I am going to do).

You can report what you think violates our policies in Connect, too, clicking on "Report Inappropriate Content" in the menu, as @ZekariasT suggested.

Please remember that the content review sometimes takes time as the team is careful to only remove content that violates policy. Please note that we'll never be able to share the specialists' decision as we respect everyone's privacy. Please see also this post to learn more about report spam, as already suggested.

Many thanks for your help.

@AbdullahAlAsif

I sympathise with your doubts as to whether any action is taken. I also did share thesame doubts.

I am not a moderator, but I am re-posting comments I made to another user in this forum  about my experience in reporting a spammer in the last month. Whether this is applicable to your problem, which sounds like malice, I don't know, but I do think Google Moderators do attempt to 'police' the system. Here's my earlier post:

I first reported a fake reviewer in early July and then another one about three weeks later. I happened to revisit both of these reviewers the other day and most of their reviews have been wiped, and their point scores have dropped considerably.

I am happy with this outcome; I feel I have contributed to maintaining the integrity of the review process in a small way. And, despite no official feedback, I am confident that my report was investigated and acted upon. I can understand the reticence of the Moderators in not providing feedback - it must be a very difficult process to diplomatically confront these abusers of the system. After all, these offenders will claim no obvious legal basis for deleting their reviews and their spam photos, other than of course such abuse by these 'reviewers' is no doubt expressly forbidden if one delved deep enough into Googles Terms of Use (and who's got time to pore over that legal morass?).

So, I encourage you to continue to report these fake reviewers. (Mind you, what infuriates me even more are those people who see Google Maps as a platform to post endless 'selfies' which have no connection with the location they have posted their photograph to. Yes, I know that you can report these photos individually, but: a) it's time consuming to do this for each photo; and b} Google's policing of photographs doesn't seem to be as rigorous as the Reviews.

Thanks for reaching us @om-mani-padme-hum.

Have you read the reply from @JeslynL, here in this topic, with a link about how to report spam?

The linked post give clear indications on the way to choose for reporting spam, depending of the situations.

Thanks for your reply.

I used http://services.google.com/forms/policy_report.html and reported  a policy violation using the form, providing my e-mail checked "This post contains hateful, violent, or inappropriate content" and submitted the flag starting ~12 months ago. Just checked and it's still there.. By now the store got a few  more reviews and it's not damaging anymore.

Level 6

I am new to all this would like to know how you can tell fake reviews?

Also, why would anyone do such a thing?

Level 8

Hi @Tijen,

You have a very good question here.  I consider it is worthy for its own thread.

Please post your question to the General Discussion board.

So it's been a month now and no one has taken action on the fake review I got from another google local guide or one left by his mother and friend. Vindictive because I'm not a liberal and they think it's ok to destroy the reputation of a conservative to further their own agendas.

 <SCREENSHOTS REMOVED>

@YK1001 how long does it normally take when we flag review as inappropriate or off topic? I couldn't find a reason called "fake". Those three people aren't even a customer. If you can talk to other google employees about refining the review process before google reviews become worthless and chaotic.

Former Google Contributor

Hi @DenverProphitJr. I have removed the screenshots from your post as we want to ensure privacy of everyone. You may have seen earlier in this thread that the team takes actions on contributions that do not adhere to our policies (reviews, photos), and we take every report seriously.

I infer that you are the owner of the claimed business and therefore recommend reaching out to the Google My Business community at https://g.co/gmbcommunity where there will be community managers to help you with the issues you are experiencing.

New to Connect? Check out Help Desk! Always keep in mind the Local Guides program rules when posting.

Level 8

Hi @DenverProphitJr,

I will not ask how long it takes to remove a "fake" review.  When Google is convinced a review is "fake", it will be got take down and Maps refreshing will not take long.

Actually the time taken is for investigation - to determine if the review is "fake" or not.   I have no idea how long it can take, my impression is it will take as long as needed.  But as a reporter, Google will not notify us about the investigation result.

Regarding the reason for flagging a review, we are given the following options:

When I want to report a "fake" review, I will choose "spam".

Hope it helps.

@YK1001 is discipline action taken against another google local guide after that investigation? I'm showing the screenshot of the guide who made a fake review.

Level 8

I can guess it will be case by case depending on the investigation result by the Google specialist team.  And Google will not comment on individual case.

Level 7

I want to report a Spammer, please contact me.

I found a guy who is posting opinions of different places with his selfie and write somthing like "He is a kind of cool and He is looking for a partner". I'm trying to flag his opinions and photos, but I dont't have time enought to mark all His rubbish...

Stil trying ofc
