Naming a Local Guides Community

Hi everyone

I would like to start a Local Guides Community, but I live in a small town, with a few other smaller towns close by.

(Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch & Ringwood... etc.)

I travel to Bournemouth & Poole equally every week and I live outside both in a little town called Ferndown, East Dorset. Which only has a few shops and a handful of pubs.

I don't think its a good idea to list all the small places in the title... and it would be hard to get 50 others interested for each town.. so should I name it after the UK county? Eg Dorset? (a bit like a US State) - I am thinking NO to that question... so...

Dorset is quite a big place... but doesn't have any big towns in it. I wouldn't ever say I was a local guide for the whole county.

And there is one unofficial local guides community in a town within Dorset - although it doesn't seem to be exactly a local guides unofficial site...

Urg this is getting ugly 😞

Would "South East Dorset Local Guides"be OK?

With tag like 'comprising Bournemouth Poole, Christchurch & East Dorset."

What should I do?

Thank you!!

Chris

Re: Naming a Local Guides Community

Hi @ChrisF, welcome to Connect! Thank you for your enthusiasm in bringing Local Guides to South East Dorset. 🙂

The Local Guides team supports only one community per area and only one owner per community. Therefore, if your area has a small population, I suggest joining the unofficial Sherborne Local Guides community that is supported by the Local Guides team. This means that the community is promoted in our official MyMap

Check out this post for more information on creating a community, and feel free to reach out if you have further questions.

Re: Naming a Local Guides Community

It might be worth contacting the owner and asking him to rename it Dorset and add in options to post per town. I do actually have an Unofficial Dorset Local Guides community but need more people to get involved. https://plus.google.com/communities/105897900495908753443 , didn't really get a chance to push it any further. Guess though the easiest option is to ask the Sherbourne owner Matt to change the name to Unofficial  Dorset Local Guides?

Re: Naming a Local Guides Community

Dorset has two of the largest towns in the country in Bournemouth and Poole. Both have populations well in excess of 100,000 people so the statement of no big towns in the county is incorrect.

Dorset already has a county-wide community which serves the general users pretty well:

https://plus.google.com/+DorsetLocalNetworking

so perhaps this could be put to better use by residents in the south east Dorset conurbation to serve them more effectively.

Sherborne is in the total opposite part of the county to the main population centre of SE Dorset, which is why I felt it justified setting up its own community a couple years ago.

That said, I don't object to giving further consideration to what you are asking if the Dorset Networking community isn't interested in your approach as that's a better fit IMHO.

Hi @Christopher_S

I would like to add something to what JeslynL said, about the naming of your community. There is no need to use "unofficial" in the title. "unofficial" will be mentioned in bio section of your community.

Check "Naming" & "Bio section" in this support page: https://support.google.com/local-guides/answer/6273834
