Waste management @my locality

I had shared details of what is done in our locality for waste management in the following thread. Please go through the same.

Re: LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld - Step 1 - Education

Excellent idea @ErmesT, that would be great, to have a board about different experiences about this topic. That way we can learn from each other!

Hi @Ravisawane

Welcome onboard, your site is super interesting.

Welcome to @Roachtours too.

@Anonymous, @Golam, @Fahid and everyone. I will start soon a board about best practice, where every member will share the good example of his country, to create a place for exchanging experience, methodology, story, for telling to everyone what they do in their countries

Re: LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld - Step 1 - Education

@ErmesT, I have a upcycle suggestion for you to continue to use some of these bottle caps.  Separate them by color, contact your local preschool or places that teach or have children’s day care under 6. The teachers can easily teach “colors” by using these to play games with the young kids, such as sorting by colors, using these to learn how to count, letting very young kids pick the up with their hands or with tongs to help develop the fine motor skills, etc.

Also here in the US, people collect plastic bottle caps and sell them on EBay, which I assume some of the buyers are teachers who may not have the time collecting bottle caps but what large quantities for their school projects.

Cheers,

Karen

Thanks @Ravisawane

@Anonymous, @Fahid

This is what we do in my office, separating plastic bottles from the caps, to manage it separatelyIMG_20180322_152203.jpg

It is a small step, of course, but in the right direction. The bag is biodegradable, of course

Re: Krill can turn MicroPlastics to NanoPlastics - Study

Thanks for sharing @Fahid

Interesting to know about these bottom feeders.

Cheers,

A world-first study by Australian researchers has found that krill can digest certain forms of microplastic into smaller – but no less pervasive – fragments.

The study, published in Nature Communications journal on Friday, found that Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, can break down 31.5 micron polyethylene balls into fragments less than one micron in diameter.

The study was conducted in laboratory conditions with new plastics. The lead researcher, Dr Amanda Dawson, who completed the study as part of a PhD with Griffith University, said that it was likely that microplastics in the ocean would be even easier to digest because they had already been degraded by UV radiation.

Within five days in a plastic-free environment, all plastics had left the krills’ systems, meaning that microplastics from krill would not accumulate in animals further up the food chain, such as whales.

The digested fragments were on average 78% smaller than the original fragments, with some up to 94% smaller.

Amazing idea. The strategy to reach the young is very commendable as 'catching them young' will inculcate a healthy culture of being responsive to the environment even as children. We can start by teaching children how to properly clean up after themselves especially after meals outside the home-by teaching them to sort out plastic waste for proper disposal and recycling.  Colorful pictures illustrating proper disposal methods would be effective in the teaching and learning process

Re: LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld - Step 1 - Education

Hi @ErmesT and proactive Local Guides,

I have been reading the proposals and all are great: posters, apps, logos... and needed to make a change.

I am going to add my point of view.

When I read the post and start to think how to make it in my Schools (I work in 3), these are the reflections that come to my mind:

  • Spain is more or less as the same level of recycle as Italy.
We have the infrastructure (recycle contenedores)... But not everybody use them.
  • Kids study the process at school in a teoric and practice way.

We have the way open, but even though the kids and families don't recycle. Why?

Because Social transformations needs at least 10 years.

So, what can we do to make the change more faster?

Albert Bandura, come to my mind with his Social Learning Theory.

" Observational learning is learning that occurs through observing the behavior of others. It is a form of social learning which takes various forms, based on various processes. In humans, this form of learning seems to not need reinforcement to occur, but instead, requires a social model such as a parentsiblingfriend, or teacher with surroundings... " (wikepedia)

How I traslate this Social Learning Theory to this topic:

  • First of all We have to be the models in our daily life, the people and kids will see us put the plastic in it container.P.E: when we go to Mcdonalds use recycle containers and upload this photos to Google Maps.  Places crowded of families and Kids

Mcdonalds recycleMcdonalds recycle

  • And we have to create new models  In my case, teachers and families. And my plan is:  Find a class where or more less they do it, and supervising the process and make sure that kids will acquire the habit. Once I am sure that one class (teacher and kids) are doing good (this will take a month, time needed for making a habit), they are going to be models and I will use them to conciencite new classes. In a tree way.

These are more or less my ideas and how to put them in practice...

Let´s do this together.

Good Morning fromt he South of Spain,

Alejandra.
