My life

POVERTY, MY LIFE PARTNER

I was born in 1959 in a village named Nalam, Ashulia thana, Saver upozila, Dhaka, Bangladesh. My father was poor and my family was big with 08 members. My father was only the earning member. In 1968, I have taken admission in class six at Shimulia Shayna proshad high school, wich is 04 miles away from my home. I have to walk in the morning for school and returned to home almost in the evening because classes finished at 1600 hrs. There was no any way to fly out from class before. As my father was very poor, I have to emloy myself as a daily labour on holidays to earn some money.

After six months my father send me to his cousins house as lodging student, it is also 04 miles away from my school and 02 miles away from my home. I have to work hard there before and after school time. I have to wake up at 0300 hrs and went to cultivate lands with them in the winter. It was too tough to wake up at 0300 hrs in the winter, plouing in the wet land till 8 O'clock in the morning. Rush back to home, took bath in the pond, have breakfast and get a quick start for the school.

After one year, I have to change my lodging life to another house (my father's cousin) but the routine was same. I have to teach 02 of his grandson, prepare my lesson, cultivation of theor lands and many more.

In 1970, when I was a student of class VIII, I have to change my lodging house again and also changed my school. It was (then) Zirabo High School. I was lodged in the house of the founder of the school. He was living in Dhaka city with his family and his old parents with one brother lives in the village. The school was near to the house, Ihave to come back for lunch at tiffin period. I have to do many jobs besides my sxhool.

My lodging master was a big boss. He was the Chairman of Ashulia union, he was a land lord, he was a politician.

Usually he comes home once in a week/fortnigt for his duty in union council office, Shcool office, manage the peoole who borrows land from him for cultivation and many more jobs for his men in the area. He was popular, kind hearted, donator, social worker and also a brave man.

My lodging house changed  and my field of work is also changed. I have to come back to home after tiffin period on Wednesday, have lunch then went out for marketing because the market was sit on Wednesday only a week. I have to buy many things for one week. Beside this, Ihave to look after his sugercane field, jackfruit field, paddy field etc. in the morning, afternoon abd even at night. I have to prepare my lessons as well.

In 1971 when I was a student of class IX, the schools were closed due to political reason/freedom fighting. I cane back home and started jobs as a labour in Jahanginagar University constuction field for Tk 02/day . It was continued from April to December,1971.

The school started in january 1972, so I went back to school again ans continue my study with .

I have passed SSC exam in 1973 scoring first division, taken admission in Zrabo college but I have to change the college after one year because the college was not permited. I took admission in Dhamrai college( now it is Dhamrai govt university college) and came back home. I have to start my job as daily labour beside my college, sometimes I have to go to college with out having any thing, sometimes we have food in only once in a day. Due to this stuation I have decided in my mind to have a permanent job and leave study. My final exam is on my forehead, Ihave seen an advertisement in a news paper"Join the Navy See the Wold". I have decided to appear in the inerview board. It was too difficult to take decision because the date of interview was on the date of my HSC exam. I didn't  tell anyting to my parrents or my relatives. My exam center was in Manikgonj Devendra College. I have started my exam staying at Manikgonj primary teachers training institute. Before my last two paper of exam, I took final decision to appear in Bangkadesh Navy interview board and left Manikgonj for Dhaka at night. It was on high risk but I was praying to almighty Allah for my achievment. Reached Dhaka in the morning and appeared on the interview board. By the blessings of almighty Allah the board declared that I have been selected as a sailor for Bangladesh Navy after gone through written, physical and medical exam.

I was enrolled in Bangladesh Navy as a sailor on10th January, 1977. I can't tell you what was my feeling when I heard that I have a permanent job and I can do something for my parrents and my family. Navy has given one night off to see our families.

When I reached at home at midnight, I knocked on the door, ny father and mother became surprised. They opened the door at rush and asked me what happened? why I am at home as my exam was running. I told them "I have good news, I got a job in Navy'. Both of them became astonished, their eyes became full of tears of joy, and atarted to praying to almighty. I can't tell aabout tthe this scenery, this can't be explained only can be felt. They have started to all my neighbours to give this good news to all and everybody were glad heard the news. And my father and mother have forgotten about my exam. I have left home in the very morning to join in. My father, mother, brother and sisters were saying good by with full of tears.

My job

I have been enrolled in Bangkadesh Navy 10th January, 1977 as a sailor. I have started boat camp training in BNS ISSA KHAN, the biggest naval base of bangladesh navy. My salary was onky Tk-270.00 per month. I have to send all money to my father because my father was poor and my family was of eight menbers. After six months on completion of my first phase of training I got 15 days leave. I have left for home with all my friends buying manythings from Chittagong. My family became very happy to see me. There was no mobile phone to communicate, we used to write letters time to time. After 15 days again left home for my job. I have joined in BNS Shaheed Moajjam at Kaptai, another training establishment of Bangladesh Navy. Nine months training here is very eventful and mamurable. we can't forget this nine month

After nine months training at Kaptai Ihave drafted to BNS S R Amin, a navy ship for training at sea on 8th july,1978. And my life at sea is started. My first sea trip on 11 july 1978. It was another memurable event. The ship left harbour at 1600 hrs. Weather was not good, the sea became rough, wind blowing strongly and the ship started to rolled and pitched, many of us started to vomiting. The sea conditions deteriorating continue as the time passing. Two ships were sailed together but at midnight both of them failled to communicate with each other. After a long struggle against the bad weather and anger sea my ship failled to continue her mssion and returned back to harbour in the morning. This is only a small event of my life and I will come back soon with the colourful event of my life to share with my friends of google maps local guides and others. Thanks for today.

Introduce Yourself — June 2018

Hi everyone! Welcome to Local Guides Connect.

Please take a moment to introduce yourself to our community.

As “Introduce Yourself” threads can be lengthy, we start a new one each month and lock past threads. You can check past threads, like May`s, to see who recently joined and where they’re from (simply search for "Introduce Yourself"). If you're new, please use this thread to post your “I'm new” or “Hello world” posts. We’ll merge any posts we find elsewhere with this thread to keep things organized.

To start, let me introduce myself:

  1. Name: Georgi
  2. Location Sofia - Bulgaria
  3. What I love about being a Local Guide: I believe that by adding the small businesses on Google Maps, I am helping them gain popularity and boost their business. I also love reading reviews other people left. It feels like a bit of history.
  4. My favorite [place / thing / cuisine / other] to explore: I travel a lot, but believe it or not, I do not like to visit landmarks or major city sights. Mostly I like people watching.

Fun Fact about me: When reading news, I only read the headlines. I do not understand art and I like everything that is out of the ordinary.

Now I guess you would like to see some photos:

The Story of Thomas Barik, a member of Google Local Guides Kota Kinabalu

The Story of Thomas Barik, a proud member of Google Local Guides Kota Kinabalu

Who is Thomas Barik?Thomas Barik on Introduction BriefingThomas Barik on Introduction Briefing

I am Thomas Barik from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. I am working as an App Developer, but my passion is Photography, helping others and photography. I am running an app dedicated to Sabah attraction places: Holiday Ideas - Sabah .5.jpg

I spent many years as an IT Specialist in different organisations and from those days I was helping others to make their decisions using information technology. I am currently working with the Appsflex Social Media Community Authority to connect peoples around by interest.

The Google Maps was my companion in photography related work, sharing photographs and travelling. It has helped me in travelling by providing me with the shortest routes and best restaurants on the way. The reviews helped me to select best places to have meals. The most important thing about Google Maps is it has helped me to save lots of time and spend more time with my family (I am a father of one kid and the time saved by Google Maps is something special for me).

In photography related matters I am using Google Maps to show places and directions to photography sites. It was my dream to document all the photography sites in Kota Kinabalu for the future generation as most of the sites get destroyed by the looters, natural disasters, natural decay, and development activities. I was working on this for last few years.

Joining Local Guides Connect and getting closer to Google Maps

I vividly remember on May 23, 2013, I went to the Kuala Lumpur Malaysia for Mobie App Trainig and I was waiting at the lobby. Then suddenly came a thin guy with specs and he opened his laptop. At that time, I was not a member of the Local Guides Connect, but I slightly knew about the program. Then I saw Local Guides Stickers on his laptop. Then I asked “Are you a Local Guide?”, He said yes, and then I came to know more about Google Local Guides from him.

Then I had few chats with him, and he gave me two Local Guides stickers, and I joined the Local Guides Connect on May 31, 2013. After joining the Local Guides Connect Program, that experience has led to many changes in my life.

Google Map is helping me to make my dream come true

7.jpg

Before I joined the Google Local Guides Connect, I am just a Google mapper, and I was not moving around with friends that much except for few selected friends. After joining the community, I saw what others do for the community and their areas of interest through the Local Guides Program and Google Maps. I saw a potential in using Google Maps to make my dream come true, that is documenting the photography sites for the future generation through Google Maps. This method of documentation may be not professional, but it will be a few photographs of the site with a review, which will be on a more reliable platform and will there for so many years to come and it will save our heritage in digital form. Now I am working on this, and I am sharing my knowledge with heritage protectors on how to use Google Maps to document photography sites.

My contribution to the Google Maps is not only limited to photography sites, but my contributions for maps also ranges from adding new places, photos, providing answers and reviewing while travelling. My current contribution to Google Maps is shown below.

When I see these statistics, it gives me self-satisfaction, because I am helping millions of people around the world.

Contribution to the Local Guides Program

As I said earlier my contribution to Google Local Guides program had changed my lifestyle by providing me to do new things. I am the owner and moderator of the supported “Kota Kinabalu Local Guide Community” which has over 100 members. I am the owner of one other communities, Google Local Guides Kota Kinabalu.

The first meetup I hosted was the Kinabalu Local Guides Meetup 2018 in Inanam, Kota Kinabalu organised by GLGKK. After that, I am planning to host more meetups and make them the most memorable meetups of Local Guides Connect Program in Kota Kinabalu.

If you want to see more photos and details of this event, please follow this link.

After some activities with Local Guides Program, I realised knowledge sharing is one of the key things in Local Guides program, and I started hosting knowledge sharing sessions with other Local Guides and encouraged them to join Local Guides Connect program.

Whenever time permits I have participated meetups organised by others.

Helping others on Local Guides Connect

I am a regular contributor to the Local Guides Connect, and it gives a lot of self-satisfaction when I appreciate someone’s work, helping someone by providing an answer to a question, and uploading photos with stories. I am always getting excited when other Local Guides give Kudos to my posts, photos and when they mark my posts as a solution.

This is my contribution to the Local Guides Connect to date.

After I had joined the Local Guides Connect program, I feel like I am a part of Global Family and I came to know lots of friends through this and started to interact with more friends.

Thank you for the guidance and encouragement given by the @JeroenM and @JeffMuir , without this it, my journey as a Local Guide would not be a memorable one.

It won’t be a successful journey without the support from all of you. The Local Guides Community is “Powered by Us” and I am a part of it.

I would like to give a big thank to @JeroenM , who always encourage me to contribute more to this program in a meaningful way.

Thank you, everyone, for helping me through this journey and reading my experience with Google Maps, Local Guides, Local Guides Connect.
