How to write a helpful coffee shop review

October 1 is International Coffee Day, but we’re so passionate about coffee that we’re celebrating all week long. Follow us on social media and Connect to get your caffeine fix.

Whenever I explore a new neighborhood, I love to spend some time in a local coffee shop. The smell of freshly brewed coffee, the sound of people catching up with friends, and the taste of a specialty blend bring me pure joy.

To find a great coffee shop to go to, I often look to the reviews Local Guides like you write about your experiences.

Here are a few tips for making your reviews of coffee shops even more helpful for others.

Add details about the coffee shop’s menu and its specialities

Let others know what kinds of coffee drinks and food they can expect at the shop, including details like the brand of coffee beans used or that the pastries are made in-house. Be sure to help people with dietary restrictions by adding information about any milk alternatives offered and if gluten-free or vegan food options are available.

Share the seating options

Some coffee shops only have a few tables while others have tons of space for you to sit. In your reviews, describe the seating options so people know whether they should be prepared to take their coffee to-go or not.

Describe the atmosphere

People go to coffee shops for different reasons, so it’s important to give others an idea of what they can expect when they go there. Would it be a good place to catch up on your reading? How about to have a business meeting? Is it a great place to meet up with friends? Share specifics about the noise level, crowds, music, and anything else you think might be helpful for someone to know before they get there.

Tell others what makes the place unique

Does the coffee shop serve a specialty drink or exciting blend? Are its walls filled with work by local artists? Have they eliminated plastic straws to reduce single-use waste? Do they have a shelf filled with great books or fun board games? Be sure to add details that show what makes the coffee shop special.

Re: How to write a helpful coffee shop review

Thanks for your informative post @AriMar  I'll sure try to keep your good tips in mind when doing reviews.

Here is a link to a review I've done on a favorite Expresso café of mine in New Jersey. I visit the café quite often, as you will see from the dozen or so photos I've taken of the lattes I've enjoyed there.  Regards, Koby

Re: How to write a helpful coffee shop review

I review a lot of coffee shops. I'm after the coffee! I have particular taste and I look for it everywhere I go, almost irrespective of attitude, atmosphere, and non-coffee options. I love supporting these shops and so I always try and put a positive spin on any quirks, especially when the coffee is exceptional. Many people use the cafe as a meeting place or a work/study space; for me, the coffee is the point and the cafe is the destination! I like to think my reviews can help someone put together a nice coffee crawl in an unfamiliar city.

Here are some I had fun with:

I wonder if my reviews would be helpful for you to decide whether you would like to try one of these shops...
