The Hindola Mahal of Mandu near Indore is an amazing piece of architecture. Hindola Mahal or Swinging palace is so called as it's walls have an incline of 77degrees and it resembles a swing. It's lateral walls are 3 metres or 9.8 feet thick and as you enter the magnificent structure you see ogee arches which once supported the roof. The construction of the Mahal commenced during the reign of Hoshang Shah in the 14th century but ended in the 15th century. This hall was used as a darbar hall. The acoustics of the hall are a cause for wonderment. The length of the hall is 30 metres that is nearly 98feet. It seems the king used to sit in one of the balconies at one end and the army commander at the other end opposite him. The acoustics of the hall were so wonderful that inspite of a distance of 100 feet between the king and the commandment, their voices could be heard clearly throughout the length and breadth of the hall (without the use of any mikes).
In the picture the ogee arches are depicted and the balcony which was the place from where the king conducted the darbar.
