Colachel was an ancient port town and Vasco da Gama called it ‘Colachi’and it was a part of old government of Travancore State. A victory pillar had been erected near the beach in commemoration of the victory in 1741. Colachel was formed as Grade III Municipality in the year 1920, is one of the oldest municipalities formulated, under Travancore Kingdom.
Though it was a coatal area and has enough depth for ship, the central government planned to built a harbour in this area.
