Thank you for the summary.

Just want to point out that this is a Public Beta program - thus it is open for all Maps users to join, even not Local Guides members.

Once joined, Google Play will keep push out updates to our Android Mobile (this is for Android only at the  moment) for new releases in the "Beta Channel" of Maps.  (Contrast with the "Stable Channel" for the Public Released versions).

Personally, I observe the Beta Channel can be 1 week ahead of the Stable Channels for Public releases.

Yes, @YK1001 is correct. The Maps Beta is a public program and everyone is able to participate if they choose to do so. It's even listed in the Maps Help Forum below:
