Abuse of Local Guides Logo

@TraciC

Dear LG Community Manager,

I have noticed an increasing number of people/ communities using the official Local Guides logo, including a trusted street photographer.  Should we, as Local Guides, ignore this or is it desirable to report this?

Cheers!

With kind regards, Jeroen

Re: Abuse of Local Guides Logo

@JeroenM as someone who hand makes my own Local Guides tshirts I will tell you what I know of the policy.

Strictly speaking, you cannot use any of the Local Guide logos.  There is a pack of logos that G+ Community Moderators/Owners (I own the San Francisco G+ Community) can use.  I have had conversations about using other logos that aren't in the pack.  For instance, I have a bright green back pack that I hand painted the Google Maps logo on.

It's fine because I hand made it for my own personal use.  I cosplayed as a "Street View Car" at San Diego Comic Con in 2016.  If I were to professionally print and sell back packs with the logo, I'd be in violation of their copyright to it and lawyers would come after me.  😄

If you want to make something for your Community members to have, use what assets that are in the Moderator/Owner pack.  As for "reporting" other Local Guides for using the logos in a way that you deem to be illegal, I leave that one for the lovely Miss @TraciC to advise you.

Dear @KimberlyAnnG,

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and most of all, your beautiful back-pack. You made me all jealous now.
One could add the "fair use" clause for education of course, but that is not what my post was about 😉

Warm greetings from the Canaries,

Jeroen

@JeroenM I do LOVE my back pack!  I'm "Dora the Explorer" when I wear it!

Re: Abuse of Local Guides Logo

Hi @JeroenM,

As @KimberlyAnnG alluded to, there are creative assets in place that have been shared with supported communities. Those moderators can use those items and customize as they wish for items they would like to share with their community. Key to remember per Local Guides Policy, is that community members must not at any time represent themselves as a Google employee or a representative of Google or its products or services.

@BruceDM

Thank you for your response.

Perhaps I was not clear. I know the rules and have come across several communities or social profiles that break that rule.  My questions was (and still is): does the LG Team like us to report these rule breakers or do we ignore them?

Re: Abuse of Local Guides Logo

@JeroenM as a stated originally, that is a portion of your question that they will have to answer themselves.  I would never presume to know.

Give them a minute to get back to you on this, I'm certain that they will.  Keep in mind that while I am back from the Summit, some of them are still not.  I do know that a couple of them are still in Mountain View for this week's TC Summit.  They are back to running around like crazy people.  😄

Re: Abuse of Local Guides Logo

Hi @JeroenM,

There are a number of ways you can report LGs:

Please see this post which explains how you can report content on Google Maps.

If you find a review or photo or something else that you think violates our policies In Google Maps, you can use the 'flag/report as inappropriate' icon next to the contribution. A team of specialists will then check if it violates any of our policies (https://goo.gl/dsVNTC & https://goo.gl/G87xzJ) and will take appropriate action.

If it is a Local Guide, please tag one of Google Moderators here on Connect and they will contact you privately - we don't recommend calling out the violation or the LG directly in the threads though. You can report somebody in this thread.

Please remember that the content review sometimes takes time as the team is careful to only remove content that violates policy. Please note that we'll never be able to share the specialists' decision as we respect everyone's privacy - thanks for your help!
