A day full of Olympic Spirit

Hey everyone!

As you might know, the Summer Youth Olympic Games were held this October in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It's the city where I live, I got to enjoy watching the competitions and to participate in related activities as soon as they began.

Like the regular Olympic Games, they are held every four years, the difference is that athletes who are 14 to 18 years old compete in these ones.

They officially began on the Saturday 6th of October, with a fun ceremony that I attended. It primarily consisted of videos projected on our Obelisk, there were people performing too. That's a very brief summary of what Opening Ceremony was about, but if you're interested you can see more of my experience in the ceremony in this video:

There are better videos around, for this and other activities I will share next, but I wanted to show you my perspective.

On the 7th, the first day of the competitions, I decided to sacrifice hours of sleep on a Sunday and went at 8 am to an Olympic related activity that consisted of moving, by literally rolling, giant replicas of sports balls to another location for them to remain there until the end on the Olympic games. The exhibition was called Ball Game.

They were one basketball, one golf ball, one volleyball, one tennis ball and one football.

They were being exhibited in the park República Federativa del Brasil, and we moved them to the park surrounding the Planetarium.

I helped move most of them, all except the football one really as it was very popular, and spent most of the time with the basketball one, and the tennis one. It was very fun, and definitely an unique experience. Ironically, as it was about the Olympics, it was also the most exercise I had in months.

If you're a dog lover like me, you don't want to miss looking at the shore of the lake at minute 15:27 in the video 🙂

As soon as the event ended, I rushed to the Urban Park that was located in the Mujeres Argentinas Park to watch the first Olympic event of Women's Bouldering. It's a very interesting sport to watch, and I could easily tell how strong the girls were. Caption: Girls from different countries competing on the four challenges of Women's BoulderingCaption: Girls from different countries competing on the four challenges of Women's Bouldering

I got to watch some of the best athletes of countries like Japan, Germany, Austria, Russia, and of course Argentina. I loved that we all cheered for the Argentine athlete when she appeared and as she was competing too, and that eveyone also cheered when any athlete reached the top, or gave a round of applause if they couldn't make it. Here's a short video of the competition:

After that, I went to the basketball court and saw a match of 3x3 Men's Basketball, Argentina was playing against Russia so there were a lot of people watching, our team won and the local crowd was very excited. Here's a video of the match:

You can hear all the cheering, especially when the winning shot happened.

Days later, they ended up winning the gold medal!

I also went to a sport initiation of rafting, which taught me how to properly sit and move my arms, I wish I knew that when I tried it this past summer, it would have saved me plenty of back pain. It also made me realize how good, and strong, the rafting athletes are.

Then, I saw a BMX competition. This is a sport that I could never imagine myself doing, but I appreciated watching it. I saw one Colombian athlete that was very good, and I think there were a group of Japanese athletes, but I couldn't really see the board from where I was standing. Yes, I also took videos of it. I think that the best ones are near the end of the video, at around the second minute, at 45 seconds:

After lunch, I went to another park: the Olympic Youth Park, that was located on the City Park near the Olympic Villa.

I had to wait a lot to enter as there were so many people inside, but when I made it I got to see the Olympic Flame and, luckily, the finals and award ceremony of fencing: Women's Foil Individual and Men's Saber Individual

Here's a 360° photo of the Olympic Flame:

Here's the video of the Women's Foil Individual finals, and award ceremony:

It was Russia against Japan, the Japanese athlete ended up winning although it was pretty close.

And here's the video of the Men's Individual Saber finals:

Korea competed against Hungary, the Korean athlete seemed to be pretty frustrated and anxious the whole time... so the athlete from Hungary ended up winning.

With that, my Olympic day ended. It was around 8 or 9 pm, more than 24 hours after the Opening Ceremony started. There were still competitions to watch, but with my few hours of sleep I was pretty tired..

saludos Farid.

Re: A day full of Olympic Spirit
