[Request] Give us the permission of setting subcategories of places

Now, many local guides in trouble because sometimes we can't choose the correct category to a place.
Actually, we can choose a big category. But if we can add a subcategory to that, it will get close to the correct category.

I introduce one of the examples,  "Michinoeki(道の駅)" in Japan. We have talked about this theme a lot of times. These are some links.

Michinoeki is close to "Toll Road Rest Area". But they are not beside of toll road, they are beside a normal road. They include restroom, gift shop, restaurant, farmers market and more. They exist in each city and town, and they have very important roles for Japanese drivers. However, we can't choose the category that is matching perfectly. Below is a sample of a Michinoeki. Like this, Michinoeki is a big service area beside a normal road.

If we can add subcategories freely to a place, we can use it for not only Michinoeki but also a lot of things.  

• Emergency shelter
• A place that has another name depending on the country
• A facility that is unique to the country
• A spot that has more than one role

Please consider it and if you have close cases, tell me it.

@HiroyukiTakisawa having categories added for types of places that do not really exist in the US is challenging it seems.

What I have picked up from previous posts is that no new categories are added at all right now but that Google 'is working on it's.

Yes, I know it. I understand that adding new categories is difficult.

And covering all categories all over the world is so hard. So if we can add categories by ourselves, I think Google will be enough to set only big categories.

That is indeed what I have also suggested in the past, @HiroyukiTakisawa: Google should tap into that part of the LG knowledge as well 😀

We often suffer from categories in which the expression of English culture is inappropriate.
I agree that it is reasonable to unify intercultural categories based on US.
How do we do a unique cultures categories?

リンクの記事を含めた私の感想ですが
「英語圏にとって分かりやすくすることが合理性」

という意見が現地やモデレーターから多いように思います。
私たちもまた、そのために考え込んでしまっています。

これはしばしば日本国内で使い辛いマップになることを意味するように思いますが、

確かグーグルマップは言語別に表記が変わる機能がありましたよね？

メインカテゴリーは合理性重視で固定して、

サブカテゴリーで母国語の人たちが解るようにするのも一考かもしれません。

そのようにフィードバックを送信してみたいと思います。

また、リンクの議論にありましたとおり、

日本独自の文化ならば「Michi-no-eki」の造語で対応することが、

外国人にとっても合理的かもしれません。

非常にわかりやすいと思います。

少し雑談ですが・・・カテゴリについては、世界各国とのマッピングが難しいとおもうので、国別実装されてしまうのは、あまり良くない気がしています。

そこで、「カテゴリ」というもの自体について見直しを提案してみるのもどうか？と自分は思っています。

基本カテゴリに対しサブカテゴリやエイリアスを国別に定義するのが最もシンプルで且つ各国対応しても問題は少ないのではないかなと。

　現状：

　カテゴリのみ

　案：

　基本カテゴリの提案 （各国共通）

　＋基本カテゴリに収まらないものは、汎用カテゴリの設置（これも各国共通）

　＋＋基本カテゴリ/汎用カテゴリに対しサブカテゴリまたはエイリアスを定義できる（ここは国別実装）

こうすることで、日本語圏だけのユーザでなく汎用的に扱える上に、それぞれの言語圏でどのように呼ぶかも定義でき、一石二鳥かもしれないと思っています。

ただ好き勝手できちゃう＝MapMakerの二の舞もあるのでこの辺はカテゴリを定義するだけで１サービスできてしまいそうな位重たいので、このあたりをどうやって精査していくかは課題ですね。。

また現状カテゴリはGoogleマップで、カテゴリ検索出来ない（曖昧にはできる / Google検索ではできる）のと、ユーザへ公開されていないカテゴリに付随するフラグ/機能があるようなので、まずはこのあたりも紐解かれた方がいい気もしてます。

カテゴリに紐付いているものとしては、アイコンや、質問欄の有無など多岐に渡るので、このカテゴリというパラメータに手を入れるためには何を考慮しなければならないか？という点も議論できるかもしれません(^^;;;

おっしゃるとおりですね、まず世界共通である原則は外せません。

どのような文化の人々でも、世界中で異文化に触れても困らないことが到達点でしょうから、

英語圏（あるいは中国語圏）で主導すべきと思います。

お店の名前や説明において母国語で優先的に表示される現在のシステムを応用し、

母国語に合うドメスティックなカテゴリーがまず表記され、

それらは世界共通カテゴリーのステータスを必ず含有して対応が自動的であることが

シンプルで良いなぁと思います。

補足しますと、カテゴリは世界共通で大枠を指定するもの。サブカテゴリは各国ごとの特徴ある施設（２，３番目）や複数の意味を持つ施設（4番目）に自由に入力できるものという扱いで考えておりました。3層まで行くと複雑になりませんか？と思いましたがこのあたりは議論の余地のある部分ですので様々な方から意見をもらいつつ、最終的にブラッシュアップして実装してもらえると嬉しいですね。

Google Mapは検索に何が反映されているかについて非常に曖昧な部分が多い仕組みでもあります。このあたりが明確に可視化されるようになるとまた違った視点がでてくるかもしれませんね。
