Re: How can I suggest or have a new 'category' created for use on Google Maps...??

@Zavija_NZ  To know more about the categories you may want to do two things check out this link to all categories. It is for all countries and is a lookup of the database of categories.  One of the other things to try would be spending time on the Google My Business community page that gets into how business use the company listings.  The types of listings/categories are not what the current program is about. They used to have Google Map Maker and that has been discontinued so adding map features is not available.  I think it would be great if those details could be added for more very local information and details, but based on my understanding it is not currently possible.  The focus is on business entities, not physical features. I am hindered in my reply because I live in the land of the imperialists. It would be great if the use of the phones to find interesting local things off the beaten path to expand what they know and see.

Many thanks David, There is an inflexibility theme starting to appear here... GUIDES are people who share their knowledge either specialists in a given field or a geographical area or by years of experience/knowledge. This LOCAL GUIDES is starting to appear a misnomer and not worth pursuing. Perhaps someone running this software, might actually want to learn or read something that helps other people not the $$ of business coffers...!! kindest regards, Xavier (New Zealand) xx

Hello @Zavija_NZ

Looking into this again, there could be away for it to work.

Similar to how bus stops and train stations etc are added by Local Council / Government / Transport authorities etc the same could be done for designated Picnic and Swimming spots controlled by a local Government agency.
