Hi all,
There have many posts regarding the recent losses of the perks of increased temp storage...
for some, it was almost an "extinction level event" & the dramatic loss of space combined
with the complexity of the space on drive vs. compressed pics was too much.
I have been using Gmail happily for over dozen years & over time, it is now eating up more
than 5GB itself. Participating in Connect also takes more space since I get lots of email
responses. So I have less than 10 GB for other things, but for some reason sometimes
my pics go onto the drive uncompressed. I then have to uncompress them, since I do
not want to endanger my critical email account.
I think that the 15GB limit should be separated into two sections, with a modest increase
to compensate for general space increases in all things digital. Maybe 10GB for Gmail
& 10GB for the rest would be helpful.
I propose this since my Gmail is "mission" critical & I cannot afford it to be blocked
if I somehow, by error, exceed 15GB for all services. I do value Gmail quite a bit
and am super grateful for this service. Since I & others on Connect do quite a bit of
"work" on Goggle Maps/ Connect, it would be nice to offer some sort of free plan
that only members can use.
Since the general public may not contribute to Goggle
Maps, this may be a good way to permanently boast membership.
While I did appreciate the temp drive space of 100GB, it did not
motivate many to sign up to pay for this extra-space....but I think
an incremental idea would benefit all.
Another idea would be to offer inexpensive incremental drive space
increases for those in Connect. It could be made on a so-called
"sliding scale" in terms of levels. To sweeten the pot, the first
5-20GB could be free for those who achieved a certain level.
Then different levels would have different prices for incremental
increases in either Gmail drive space or general drive space.
For example, those at Level 1 would pay a baseline price of
$1 per 10GB / year over a 20GB baseline till they reached a max of
$9 per 90GB year...while Level 9,10's could have a baseline that
starts at let say 40GB, with yet another option to increase $1 per
10GB/yr. until a max of 190GB is reached for that plan.
I understand that this is more complex, but Goggle is also directly
competing with Yelp, Trip Advisor, and others for pics & reviews...
especially in the US. Yelp is also able to offer checkin discounts
that are quite valuable...while checking into Goggle Maps only
tracks your movements [which may benefit Goggle in some ways].
On the other hand, while Trip Advisor is fun, they really do not offer
much of value except their badges...at least so far.
Anyway, drive space has decreased dramatically in price & Goggle
should respond in kind, especially since they seem to have a goal of having
millions on Connect. As they increase the Connect numbers, it is likely
that Goggle can allow some ads to compensate for lost revenue.
I also think that Goggle should try to compete with Amazon in terms
of competing in new markets....such as buying Rite Aid to offset
what Amazon intends to do. Since Amazon has purchased Whole
Foods, I see mostly profit for Amazon and only token discounts for
consumers. I think that more competition is better & there could be
some amazing offers for Connect members that could be somewhat
similar to the popular Amazon Prime. Goggle may label it, Goggle
Connect Primo or something, and somehow link a Yelp-like experience
along with an Amazon Prime experience...not to mention Voice enabled
home device options.....that involve the cloud. Thinking of the cloud,
it also would be an interesting idea for Goggle to start to acquire companies
such as AMD & thus further lower their costs.
Hope the ideas filter the way up, if it has not occurred to the powers that
be as of yet.
Thank you,
Paul 🙂

SolutionThanks for the suggestion @Malarik.
However, taking into account what you are talking about, I encourage you to add it to the Google Drive user community, as the scope is beyond what Local Guides is. Also, you can send feedback directly from Google Drive (open the menu and go to "Help & Feedback"), as this will route the suggestion directly to the team in charge.
Regards,
Luis
