[Feature Request] Add tags/keywords for places/businesses

It would be a great feature if I could add public tags/keywords to specific places / businesses.

For example if I am travelling to London and I would like to see all places that are good photography spots (I like to take pictures).

Today if I search for photography I only get the businesses that the name or category includes the word photography. 

Or if there is a business or place that has many synonyms I could add tags / keywords to address all those variations. 

Or if I would like to see all places that are interested for people interested in history for example. I might see a list of some museums or buildings that are interested for people with that interest. 

Take a look how stackoverflow works - there you can add tags to all items/questions. 

You add tags for this forum post but not for your Google Maps. It could be the community that could take care and approve or reject tags (and even get points for that 🙂 )

It sounds like this can be taken care of by the Place Category.  Can you further elaborate why this is not working as expected?

Can you have more than one category? I have never seen more than one category set for each place. 
Also you can not add synonyms in the category field - I thought it was restricted to specific words or phrases.

At least if I search for photography I only get camera shops not any great places where are interested for photographers.

Google Maps can't accommodate everything on the base map, so 'spots which are good to take a photo' wouldn't be permitted. For such special interests the best option would be Google My Maps

Yes, you can - in MapMaker. Hopefully this feature will also be ported to Maps by the time MapMaker is retired (in March 2017).

Indeed, there are no synonyms. Theoretically Google's "smart search" should take care of this (it work more or less well in web search - true that we cannot rely on it in most of the languages apart from English)

I have seen places in Stockholm for example that are listed under local language and also in English - 2 listings for one place. 
By using tags we could remove one place and add tags that list the local name. 

I didn't know this was possible in MapMaker.

This is a different issue, @Hákon. Names in different languages can be added in MapMaker but it is already a feature in simple maps, too. Categories are automatically translated when you switch languages.
