Meet the woman who designs emoji for Google

📅🗓📆

World Emoji Day is an unofficial holiday to celebrate how emoji have changed the way we communicate around the 🌏.

The Keyword (Google’s official blog!) celebrated last week by interviewing Jennifer Daniel, the design manager for Google emoji. (Yes, that is a real job!)

It is a job, although the majority of my time is spent managing the art team within the ‘Expressions’ group, which creates gifs, camera effects, stickers, and other fun experiences for Gboard, Android Messages, and Pixel,” Jennifer told The Keyword.

To ensure everyone is represented in emoji, Jennifer and her team at Google surround themselves with experts and ask a lot of questions.

Stylistically, the more abstract an emoji is, the more you can project yourself onto it. On the flip side, the more detail a drawing has, the more people fixate on how real or accurate it is. Taking detail away from an emoji can offer more opportunity for interpretation and personality, making emoji an extension of your own. I prefer to think of Google’s emoji like words—keep them as abstract as possible.”

Find out what’s next for Jennifer and the rest of Google’s emoji team by reading the full blog post over on The Keyword.

Then, in the comments below, share your favorite emoji.

I’ll start. Mine is 😹. What’s yours?

@aaryesdee yes places still have gender on their forms and ticketing and bookings, it doesn't mean that we drag everything back to suit those dinosaurs, we should adapt to the current approach where gender shouldn't even be asked unless it matters (e.g. medical procedures). Take it off the forms. Take it off the tickets.

Airlines are a special case if travelling internationally - they are required to check what the person uses against their passport before allowing them on the plane.

emojis are great way to Express the inner feelings by a face. I'm glad that I been one of the lucky person to use emojis as my choice on my mood and I would like to thank the creator and team for the thoughtful process where I guess covered the most of the emotions..Thanks for making the Google for best fit for users.

@AriMar

Hi'

Great contribution from you to the Google World community.

May I make a request? Why can't you add emoji on Sit-ups. ( This punishment was commonly used in early days Schools.) Here, he or she has to hold both ears with own hands and do sit-ups.

I'm sure it will be a great one.

Thanks & Regards

This is very interesting! Coming from an artistic background, this is really intriguing to understand that there actually is a job around this. But I believe being in Google and handling things at such a massive level requires that handling of services. How I wish I could be part of this team! Seems to be a fun thing to do for a living

Here's my favourite emoji - 😒
