Meet the woman who designs emoji for Google

📅🗓📆

World Emoji Day is an unofficial holiday to celebrate how emoji have changed the way we communicate around the 🌏.

The Keyword (Google’s official blog!) celebrated last week by interviewing Jennifer Daniel, the design manager for Google emoji. (Yes, that is a real job!)

It is a job, although the majority of my time is spent managing the art team within the ‘Expressions’ group, which creates gifs, camera effects, stickers, and other fun experiences for Gboard, Android Messages, and Pixel,” Jennifer told The Keyword.

To ensure everyone is represented in emoji, Jennifer and her team at Google surround themselves with experts and ask a lot of questions.

Caption: A screenshot of Gboard that shows the diversity of professional people emojiCaption: A screenshot of Gboard that shows the diversity of professional people emoji“Designing emoji (and stickers, and gifs, and camera effects) for a global audience requires a certain level of humility and curiosity about the world,” she said. “As a principle, we want to create images that are iconic and timeless. Stylistically, the more abstract an emoji is, the more you can project yourself onto it. On the flip side, the more detail a drawing has, the more people fixate on how real or accurate it is. Taking detail away from an emoji can offer more opportunity for interpretation and personality, making emoji an extension of your own. I prefer to think of Google’s emoji like words—keep them as abstract as possible.”

Find out what’s next for Jennifer and the rest of Google’s emoji team by reading the full blog post over on The Keyword.

Then, in the comments below, share your favorite emoji.

I’ll start. Mine is 😹. What’s yours?

I prefer to meet this one person who draw roads on the Maps. Knowing about delays in publishing, I'm sure that it is only one person.

Great respect to her or to he.

Do you plan to celebrate the World Day of New Roads on the Google Maps? I can't wait for that.

FYI: We wait over two months for publishing missed or rebuilt roads. If we mark road as closed on begining of reconstruction, the road is marked as closed after the maintenance.

Many reports goes to null device.

I have no idea how to update bicycle ways or touristic paths...

Hey @AriMar,

This is a wonderful post, thank you so much!

I've always found it curious how diverse and encompassing the emojis are, but I never really realised how much work and research went into crafting them.

One sentence that left me speechless (pun intended) from Jennifer Daniel's interview is that emojis are just as abstract as words. It's true, isn't it - even the words for which we have a clear image, like tree, burger or cup, are still shapeless in a way (my idea of a tree is different from yours or anyone else's). That's certainly some food for thought.

Oh, and my favourite emoji is this crying one, because I can use it both when I'm swamped with things to do and when I've just seen a fluffy baby animal!

@AriMar

Why can't we have male & female emoji for our Googlers, Local Guides and all Moderators along with ID.

It would be interesting is it not?

@aaryesdee I'm not sure why we need different gender (sex as you termed it) icons along with the person's name for the Moderators? Connect is about equality. The gender of a person isn't going to change the quality or their posts on Connect and I feel that identifying their gender isn't relevent especially when you consider that a significant membership of the global community do not identify with the gender they were physically born with. I personally prefer to recognise that every person I encounter is different and to accept them as they are.

@PaulPavlinovich

Hi Paul'

Thanks for the reply. Indeed I believe in gender equality, However the classification prevails everywhere.

Take a look at the Airlines, you got to mention Mr / Ms. Even in Google emoji,there is male & female. So it's not that I intend to take this to a debate mode, but put to rest.

Thanks once again Paul'
