Introducing Photo Paths (and more) in the updated Street View app

Update: the "Connected Photos" feature is now called "Photo Paths" and is available globally to all Android phones with ARCore support.

We know Local Guides love to discover new places, and the Street View app is a great way to explore your world no matter where you are. You’ll soon be noticing some changes that we are rolling out in the Street View app on Android. With this post, we want to give some more details about those changes. Read on to learn more about what’s new.

Enhanced and simplified menu navigation
Tap to Explore Street View imagery, tap to Create Street View imagery, and tap Profile to manage your Street View collections.

A new Profile tab
You’ll also notice that the Profile tab has been redesigned for easier collection management. There are some filtering options, and photos within a collection are grouped together (no more endless scrolling!) If you create Street View using third party tools or third party apps, your collections will continue to be managed in the new Profile page.

Create Photo Paths with your smartphone, using the Street View app
We are happy to introduce a new way to create Street View! By tapping Photo Paths from the Create menu, you can now create Street View with any ARCore-compatible Android device. This beta feature is now available worldwide.

Caption (above right): an animation showing how you can view your published photos on Google Maps using the Street View layer

When you publish your Photo Paths, they will appear publicly in the Street View app, as well as in the Street View layer in Google Maps. As you can see in the examples above, Photo Paths are visible where existing Street View is not available, and they appear as dotted blue lines alongside the solid blue lines of Street View. Just like we do with Street View imagery, we will also use Photo Paths to add new businesses to the map, so you can use this tool to keep your community up to date on Google Maps even if the Street View car has been to your neighborhood before!

We are also offering new badges in the Street View app which level up as you use the Photo Paths feature!

Thank you, Local Guides!

The Street View team would also like to acknowledge the tremendous testing efforts of the Local Guides who participated in the Street View Trusted Tester program. (Check out this early feedback from @PaulPavlinovich.)  Thanks to them, the team was able to fix hundreds of bugs and implement many changes to reflect their critical feedback. These testers will be honored with a special Early Adopter badge in the Street View app. Thank you to all of our testers

@potaro67 The goal for Google since the beginning was always collecting data. That's their core business. Google is a business, like all business they goal is to make money. Street View is a way to gather data that will be used to complete their database, improve Google Maps and ultimately make money from this.

By letting users uploading data (first with pictures, then photospheres and now Street View pictures) Google simply found a good way to collect more and more data, for free. Google manages to motivate people uploading their pictures with Local Guide and Trusted SV programs, ranks, badges, stats, emails to "congratulate them for their hard work"... and since people will do this without asking to be paid there is no reason for Google to pay us. I mean, the company even managed to push people to do Street View instead of itself and on top of this it charges them when they upload the data through Publish API (while depriving the SV app from most of its functionalities to push people using the API through third-party apps): they get both money and data to make money. Nobody seems to question this and if people keep uploading Street View and other data voluntarily then Google has no reason to change its plans.

Hi, @L-C

Exactly.
Google builds and maintains a very good system. The system occasionally corrupts the user's data, but the system itself does not go down. It's a very tough system.
We use the attractive features of the system for free. Occasionally, we pay a fee to use it.
Also, we spend a huge amount of private money to create an environment to use it.

The reason is that the system is fun and attractive. We will continue to use it as long as the system is attractive.

When it loses its appeal, we just stop using it.

Hi @Stafford this feature is fantastic because we can better and more easily contribute with Google Maps by using Street View App with our smartphones in case that we don't have a 360° camera.

nice development.

@Stafford , when is the development going to be released?

Former Google Contributor

Hey @L-C

Thanks for sharing your opinion with us and for addressing your concerns about the new Connected Photos feature.

Can you give us more information like what do you mean when you say “the new mode disappeared”? Are you using the new SV app UI? If so, please click on Create - Connected Photos BETA.

If you are not able to see the new feature, please make sure you are using an eligible device: - you need an Android smartphone, that is AR-Core compatible. This will mean the following: 1. Android 7.0 or later (some models require newer versions) 2. Device that originally shipped with the Google Play Store 3. Play Store requires internet access in order to update ARCore.

When people contribute through the new Connected Photos features and publish their contributions, they can see them as blue dotted lines. Where Google Street View imagery is present, we will continue to show this as primary imagery with the solid blue lines.

Please also note that the Connected Photos feature is currently fully available in North America for New York City, Toronto and Austin, TX, and globally for Nigeria, Indonesia and Costa Rica.

Due to the volume of private messages Google Moderators receive, I do not read or respond to private messages. Please post publicly so others may benefit from your discussion. If you require urgent assistance, please tag a Google Moderator. Thank you!

Hi @Bobiisha the new mode disappeared after it appeared as a "drive mode" a month ago button but it was probably something like early testing. I think Google regularly release new functionalities to a few people so they can test it at a small scale before reverting it after enough feedback was received. As I do not live in one of the listed areas it is normal that I don't have it yet so there is no problem at all. I just need for Google to roll it in Europe and with my Galaxy S8 I should have no trouble using it.

>When people contribute through the new Connected Photos features and publish their contributions, they can see them as blue dotted lines. Where Google Street View imagery is present, we will continue to show this as primary imagery with the solid blue lines.

So if a road has both data and we click it, Google Street View data will be selected? Or it is a matter of date (newer data first)? When I use Google Street View I like to see high-quality official Google imagery which is very pleasant to use in opposition of third-party imagery which has lower quality, lower navigation capability (very limited movement) and longer loading times, creating a frustrating user experience. Since there is no setting to filter data sources I regularly hit unofficial coverage and it's really frustrating in countries like Finland or Bhutan where people uploaded pictures everywhere.

Thank you for reading and interacting with us.

Googler

@L-C

So if a road has both data and we click it, Google Street View data will be selected?

If a road has both, then we will default to the Google Street View.  But we will still use the Connected Photos imagery to update business listing info on the map itself, so it's still helpful for you to publish imagery in places with existing GSV.

In the future we want to make it easier to choose between GSV and Connected Photos, because we know that people have reasons for wanting each thing (immersive but older vs. fresher but more limited) in different settings.

@Stafford Thanks for clarifying. I think it would make sense to have all source of data selectable for the reason you said. This would make this new "connected photos" feature more useful for users and more enjoyable for local guides that takes time to do it as they know they work will be viewable by anyone else.

Since connected photos are already displayed with a different blue line it would make sense to be able to toggle solid lines and dotted lines on Maps, along with settings in Maps API to select them separately. And why not separating blue dots (photo spheres) and unofficial Street View in the process? This is a suggestion I already did and I am part of a larger group of users that hope this can become a reality.

Thank you.

I shot a new video mode in Japan yesterday.
I conducted a demonstration experiment of the shooting method I proposed in the comment below :
https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/Announcements/Introducing-Connected-Photos-and-more-in-the-upd...

The SVs created by uploading the shooting results and the video files shot at that time are as follows :

2020.12.08 新動画モード SV画像の例.png

This road is new.
This road is visible in the center of the photo below in official SV :
However, this road is not yet drawn on the Google Maps Web. Also, the aerial photo layer does not yet reflect the current state.

By making two round trips on this road, I shot four videos.
2020.12.08 新動画モード 4方向撮影の模式図.png

Hi, @Stafford ,
Will SV created from these four videos be interconnected in the future?
The following article shows an example of functionally connecting and displaying multiple 2D photographs in another map information service.

Also, I still can't see the four blue dotted lines of SV above on the Google Maps web.
Are these SV shots taken in Japan displayed as dotted blue lines where there is no existing SV?

We would like to do something like this, but right now we only show one set of images at a time.  We are definitely thinking about exactly what you suggested here.

> Also, I still can't see the four blue dotted lines of SV above on the Google Maps web.

Dotted lines are only in the SV layer on mobile right now, web will be available early next year.

Hi @Stafford,

Thanks for sharing this with us!

For long i have been looking for ways to contribute more to the Street View. Just right about now my SV App [for iOS] still isn't rolled out with the new feature and the last update [2.17.2] was since 4 months ago. Should we still be expected of it hasn't started for iPhone users? Thank you
