With Europe’s new data protection law (GDPR) in effect, we’re highlighting some of the ways you can control and see what you share with us and others, and what to do if you decide to close your Connect account or leave the Local Guides program.

First, you can change your email preferences for the Local Guides program so you’ll only hear from us about info you want to know about. You can also see the data you’ve shared with us. See everything you’ve shared on Google Maps by downloading your contributions with Google Takeout. Through Connect, you can see the personal and community data you’ve shared. Here’s how:

  • In Connect, go to My Settings
  • Tap Personal Information
  • Scroll down for links to download your personal and community activity data

Downloading your data does not remove it or close your Connect account. If you decide to close it, we’d be sad to lose you, but here’s how.

In Connect, go to My settings

  • Under “Personal,” tap Close Account

After you close your account, you can't reopen it. If you later decide to rejoin the community, you must re-register and start from scratch. Closing your account will immediately log you out.

In the event you want to leave the Local Guides program, you can download any data you want first, then follow these steps:

This won't have any impact on your contributions, however Google will delete your Local Guides profile and the features and data that depend on it. You may remove any of your Google Maps contributions at any time in Your contributions tab.
