Waste reporting - on Google Maps

This post is my proposal (my idea) to Google Maps for 2020, and I think is also the dream of many others.

The idea is quite simple, this video is explaining it. Of course, this is the view from the Local Guide Side

To know how this system works (in my mind only, at the moment):

please have a look to the following picture

Caption: a graphical representation of the Waste Reporting Idea - The picture is representing an idea, not something that is already working on Google Maps - Local Guide @ermestCaption: a graphical representation of the Waste Reporting Idea - The picture is representing an idea, not something that is already working on Google Maps - Local Guide @ermest

This is an idea of synergy between three parts:

Local Guides <> Google Maps <> Local Waste Companies

Caption - The Waste Reporting Cycle - Local Guides @ermestCaption - The Waste Reporting Cycle - Local Guides @ermest

Google Maps could build up an interface for reporting abandoned trash or polluted areas, and send the information, loaded by Local Guides, to Local Authorities/Waste companies that are in charge for the clean-up of the area.

The Easy part:

The transfer of Information / Data between Local Guides and Google Maps is simple:

Local Guides are already inserting data in Google Maps, directly in point that are not related to POI:

  • Information related to Missing or wrong road (Send a feedback)
  • 360 Photos

Adding one more information is always possible

The Difficult part:

The difficult side is the interface between Google Maps and Local Authorities and/or Waste companies

I am thinking about something like Google Transit program, where local companies can join the program and update the information.

In this case, Local Companies can join the program, receive information, and send feedbacks to Google Maps, for confirming or denying the report

This is the more difficult part, because the Waste Companies need to register and identify in the map the area of activity (reporting will be possible only in areas covered by a Local Authority or a Waste Companies registered in Google Maps).

This means that the registration interface must have the capability for this function.

In Italy Waste Companies are operating according to administrative areas, so it is quite easy to identify the area covered by the service, but I don’t know how it works in other Countries

As I am aware of the cost of this kind of project, so I am thinking about two steps:

  1. In the first step the program should by run, as a beta test, only in a few areas where local waste companies can set an agreement with Google
  2. In the second step, the registration platform should be built and activated

Of course, we can go deep with more details, if needed. At the moment I am curious to know what the other Local Guides think of this idea

Now I fully understood you and appreciate too - I respect you for bringing the word "Awareness" !

It is most essential; if not today, then, at least tomorrow, the goal will be achieved. I fully join you, from bottom of my heart, as rightly told by many other LGs, here.

Dear @ErmesT, I am honored by your offer to lead this 'Great Task' for my motherland - at the same time, suddenly jumping (due to my commitment to my professional responsibilities - sorry) into a 'Yes' will be amateurish.

But, humbly I can suggest a Team like (of course @vvbellur &/or @NareshDarji) & @JohnPeter @AmbrishVarshney & many other active LGs, including @Safdarrai, @NandKK, Mr Varghese from Kerala, Mr Tripty from Kolkatta, and .....

Thanks, dear all...

@ErmesT  I think these factors will work it just going to need time and lots of momentum from other countries around the world pledging the same thing with Google Maps reputation as the networker then it is just o mater of #LocalGuides populating it as we have always done currently...

that's my proposal in a nutshell or they say cut a long story short

Hi @ErmesT

This is a great initiative. You rightly mentioned that, "the difficult side is the interface between Google Maps and Local Authorities", as working with governments is never a cake-walk.

The Indian government runs a program dedicated to cleanliness, called "Swachh Bharat Mission". So, implementation of your idea in India will be easy for Google.

Also, the state government in New Delhi already has an app for reporting garbage accumulation through photographs. I myself have used it and got a call from local authority for details of the specific place I reported. So, teaming up with them will be easy.

Hope the idea gets implemented by Google. We local guides will surely work on waste reporting after the feature is released.

Thank you @HimsBoss , I know about the great Indian project. In the meantime, I am proposing to the LGs One year of "training" through this post: LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld-is-2-0-now-The-new-project-waiting-for-2020

Beautiful proposal, @ErmesT 💖🙏🏽

Many Local Guides are citizen journalists, and quite good at it, too!

I believe the original intent of the Local Guides program is to help local businesses - and of course, Google and it's users.

But what if we could have an even bigger impact?

What if Local Guides could improve our local economies, support the tourism industry, AND save our planet all at the same time? The visions of peace, clean air and water, sustainabe lands and practices, global partnerships, and healthy people - all come closer to sight.

I am in full support of @ErmesT's proposal. Google Maps technology makes it possible. People make it achievable. Let's take action!

And to any who oppose or doubt successful implementation of a project of this scope, I recommend checking out the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), World Health Organization (WHO) strategic plans, and U.S. Healthy People 2020 goals as examples. All WHO member states and UN participants have agreed to work toward the SDGs for health, environment, and partnerships. Google would have some powerful allies for this one!

Again, great work @ErmesT.

Please keep me posted on any progress and how I may be of support.

Thank you @MissAprilNola , fully apreciated.

We started to run one year ago, with a project that still active: Local Guides Clean The World - A Local Guides project, as you can see in several post in the community.

Also, in parallel with this post idea, we started one evolution of the program, for start reporting through Google Mymaps: #LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld is 2.0 now - The new project, waiting for 2020

Feel free to read, comment, share, join if you like. It will take a long time to read all the post of the activities linked in the worldwide “Mymaps of plastic pollution”, but is a nice reading.

Thank you again

muy de acuerdo contigo

Hi @TravellerG ,

That's a great feat by the Indonesians. People of Mumbai have also carried out such cleaning activities on their beaches. Similar activities have been carried out in Delhi for cleaning River Yamuna by organisations like Art of Living.

These examples show that involvement of local people, students and NGOs makes a bigger impact than just reporting the waste location to the authorities. Local Guides can come up with the contacts of student groups and NGOs operating in their respective areas. This database can be used for reporting the waste location to a wider audience.

Himanshu
