Waste reporting - on Google Maps

This post is my proposal (my idea) to Google Maps for 2020, and I think is also the dream of many others.

The idea is quite simple, this video is explaining it. Of course, this is the view from the Local Guide Side

To know how this system works (in my mind only, at the moment):

please have a look to the following picture

This is an idea of synergy between three parts:

Local Guides <> Google Maps <> Local Waste Companies

Google Maps could build up an interface for reporting abandoned trash or polluted areas, and send the information, loaded by Local Guides, to Local Authorities/Waste companies that are in charge for the clean-up of the area.

The Easy part:

The transfer of Information / Data between Local Guides and Google Maps is simple:

Local Guides are already inserting data in Google Maps, directly in point that are not related to POI:

  • Information related to Missing or wrong road (Send a feedback)
  • 360 Photos

Adding one more information is always possible

The Difficult part:

The difficult side is the interface between Google Maps and Local Authorities and/or Waste companies

I am thinking about something like Google Transit program, where local companies can join the program and update the information.

In this case, Local Companies can join the program, receive information, and send feedbacks to Google Maps, for confirming or denying the report

This is the more difficult part, because the Waste Companies need to register and identify in the map the area of activity (reporting will be possible only in areas covered by a Local Authority or a Waste Companies registered in Google Maps).

This means that the registration interface must have the capability for this function.

In Italy Waste Companies are operating according to administrative areas, so it is quite easy to identify the area covered by the service, but I don’t know how it works in other Countries

As I am aware of the cost of this kind of project, so I am thinking about two steps:

  1. In the first step the program should by run, as a beta test, only in a few areas where local waste companies can set an agreement with Google
  2. In the second step, the registration platform should be built and activated

Of course, we can go deep with more details, if needed. At the moment I am curious to know what the other Local Guides think of this idea

Wao @ErmesT,

It is a great idea. Count me in for any future campaign, if there would be. Totally agree with @ShafiulB , you're a good thinker. Every of your post shows your hard work and dedication towards Lg and world.

@AntonellaGr  I can spot you there.

Kudos to U & Antonella....

Basically I am interested in the idea but the problem is about

 Local Waste Companies

(their existence) as some cities don't have them at all.

Wow! this is an excellent idea @ErmesT 🙂
Linking local authorities would help to minimize the application development costs. Few weeks before we launched a web for Municipal Council, Batticaloa and we named that as "Tell to Mayor". we volunteers developed this for our council for free of change and used Google map to get the location details. The MC is really happy about this, and they are receiving more complaints, suggestions from the public (including garbage issues).

I will be happy if Google enables your idea on Google map for those local authorities 🙂

Thank you for your feedback @IlankovanT , I love the idea implemented in you country.

I am proposing the same as a suggestion for the Authorities @Anonymous

I would like to start reporting asap, using my-maps: #LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld is 2.0 - The new project

@ErmesT A great idea. I can see some traction in this, especially using it to guide real estate and health matters. Who wants to live next to nasty waste bringing down the house prices, or live next to a place which hasn't had rubbish collected for years and could affect children.

Given the right push, I think a lot of lot of local action and neighborhood groups may use it as a data point for serious change.

Plastic & waste has to be stopped via consumer reduction, lobbying to companies and by direct action.

Thank you @Phunky

we can start reporting today, waiting for Google maps: using my-maps: #LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld is 2.0 - The new project

There is so much bureaucracy in the middle, but this should not discourage a wonderful initiative like this! I keep my fingers crossed !!!

Excellent idea @ErmesT!

An additional benefit of having a "transit-layer-style" connection with e.g. Waste Companies and/or the local authorities in charge of that, could be that it would be quite easy to get all kinds of recycling points (places where you can drop off glass, clothes, etc) on the map, the same way bus stations are mapped.

Thank you, @davidhyno

Yes, you are right, I am aware of the burocracy.

I am happy that you want to ba part of this experience @Alana74

I have made a "training program" for this year, for local Guides to learn how to report, and for local authorities to start to be used to receive uor reports on Google My-maps.

feel free to join: #LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld is 2.0 now - The new project, waiting for 2020
