Waste reporting - on Google Maps

This post is my proposal (my idea) to Google Maps for 2020, and I think is also the dream of many others.

The idea is quite simple, this video is explaining it. Of course, this is the view from the Local Guide Side

To know how this system works (in my mind only, at the moment):

please have a look to the following picture

This is an idea of synergy between three parts:

Local Guides <> Google Maps <> Local Waste Companies

Caption - The Waste Reporting Cycle - Local Guides @ermestCaption - The Waste Reporting Cycle - Local Guides @ermest

Google Maps could build up an interface for reporting abandoned trash or polluted areas, and send the information, loaded by Local Guides, to Local Authorities/Waste companies that are in charge for the clean-up of the area.

The Easy part:

The transfer of Information / Data between Local Guides and Google Maps is simple:

Local Guides are already inserting data in Google Maps, directly in point that are not related to POI:

  • Information related to Missing or wrong road (Send a feedback)
  • 360 Photos

Adding one more information is always possible

The Difficult part:

The difficult side is the interface between Google Maps and Local Authorities and/or Waste companies

I am thinking about something like Google Transit program, where local companies can join the program and update the information.

In this case, Local Companies can join the program, receive information, and send feedbacks to Google Maps, for confirming or denying the report

This is the more difficult part, because the Waste Companies need to register and identify in the map the area of activity (reporting will be possible only in areas covered by a Local Authority or a Waste Companies registered in Google Maps).

This means that the registration interface must have the capability for this function.

In Italy Waste Companies are operating according to administrative areas, so it is quite easy to identify the area covered by the service, but I don’t know how it works in other Countries

As I am aware of the cost of this kind of project, so I am thinking about two steps:

  1. In the first step the program should by run, as a beta test, only in a few areas where local waste companies can set an agreement with Google
  2. In the second step, the registration platform should be built and activated

Of course, we can go deep with more details, if needed. At the moment I am curious to know what the other Local Guides think of this idea

Yes @ErmesT, I can actually "see" this option in the future (well Maps interface and Maps reports will be different but the option is important).

You're welcome, but thank you for The idea 🙂

I like "not short term" things but those that developing world 🙂

What a great initiative @ErmesT And I can tell you for free that such a project will become a huge hit for local guides in Nigeria, as we seem to have a waste problem, especially in the urban areas. Google Maps via this initiative could give local guides the power to notify the waste authorities in the various communities/states.

It's the final hour and call to make our environment clean and green.  Whatever human has done to nature, now nature is giving back. Due to our carelessness, greed, misuse of natural resources and manipulation we are facing the natural calamities and various pollutions.  So it's time to restore our planet to its original stage,  then only the next generation can live on earth safely.

Thank you dear @ErmesT for all your efforts and passion for the eco-friendly environment.  I highly supported your idea,  let's clean the world whatever way possible.  And you have taken the most powerful tool,  that is GOOGLE MAP. With millions of users, it will be easy to report the wastages to the concert department. I believe it's the easiest, fastest and economical.

Once again if food waste or excess food reporting possible will be good for countries like India where thousands go to bed in hunger. So with the help of google reporting and notification excess food can be reported and collected from the location for the immediate distribution. An option like Red, green, orange colors can be added to indicate the priorities.

I too thank the technical team who work behind the screen very hard and implement our idea and make it possible.

Thanks again and my best wishes dear friend @ErmesT

Hello @Zero-Litter,

It is true what @PaulPavlinovich had mentioned and I will merge it to the related post about the cleaning environment topic in the Idea Exchange section, where you can show your support.

In addition to that, if you have a different idea that you think could improve the Local Guides program, feel free to share it in the Idea Exchange section. To learn more about the Idea Exchange, you can read this article How do I use the Idea Exchange?

Idea is really good, but I have my doubt, how it will work in country like India.

But, I support & vote for success of the idea, dear @ErmesT

Thank you @TravellerG @NareshDarji

I clearly understand your doubt, that are also mine. I spent months thinking, before to decide to create this post. Why? Because I think that Google name can be a good drive, for pushing countries to increase the awareness about abandoned waste. We started Local Guides Clean The World - A Local Guides project one year ago, and up to now we had a lot of clean-up actions from many countries, as you can see from the worldwide “Mymaps of plastic pollution”, well mantained by @DavidTito. I can see Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, in there, but you are right, no one from India.

Through the project we are creating awareness about environement, and really surprise me that no one LG from India Joined. Do you want to lead it in your country? Maybe @vvbellur will help you
