A year or two ago, Google offered free Google Drive space for a year to all local guides over Level 3(?)
Techs website all reported this and the number of local guides suddenly skyrocketed, most of whom had hundreds of reviews all created in the same week and all saying “great place”.
Now google want lots of content which is free to them. Hence Local Guides. If they offer significant perks, the volume of content rockets, but the quality of content plummets.
So perks need to be significant enough to encourage LGs but trivial enough not to attract opportunists.
For me, I’d like the trust that after all the free content I’ve given them, my new places (often small remote archaeological locations) were not rejected out of hand just because they didn’t have a website. Reward me with some more trust. I don’t need prizes. You can even remove degrees of trust if I misbehave
