@LucioV

Oddly enough, in the comment I posted on your page about Trusted Verifiers the QUOTE button appeared in its normal position even though it is now absent from other parts of the system already.

In the meantime, I have had a look at the way it was implemented in HTML so that I can still include elements  of that feature when I need to clarify elements of a previous online conversation.

I suppose the other alternative would be to take screenshots of what you wanted to quote and then include them as a graphic since they cannot be altered by further editing.

Yes and no, for me.

Yes: a possiblilty to select part of the original post (or a comment to it) and then paste it in your own comment in a "quote" style would indeed be nice.

No: a 1 button quote function (+ quite diffcult editing functionality of that on the mobile versions) has led in the past to people often quoting a full, often quite lenghty post to then just add something like 'I agree' or 'Nice' (and in some cases even a full of a comment as quote that contained a full quote of the original text). Not good for readablilty (and not good for your finger that operates the mouse wheel)

Status changed to: Revisit later

Hi @LucioV. This was intentionally removed from the new Connect as it was often misused, resulting in confusing posts and long threads. I'm marking this as something we can revisit later if the need arises.

The ability to quote from a previous comment need not be connected with the complexities of nested threads but can be supported in a forum which only supports flat sequential comment streams.

In the meantime those who know a bit of HTML can always use cut-and-paste to copy the relevant parts of a previous message and then paste in into its response.

To highlight the fact that it is a quote that section can easily be enclosed within the standard BLOCKQUOTE tags :

<blockquote> ... </blockquote>

A lot of other functionality can be added manually via the HTML tab - including the ability to edit most of  the standard font attributes which have been removed from the Connect 2.0 interface.

I understand the thought of @TraciC but I think that quote could be really useful.

So this is another piece of code that will become a macro, as like as the insert image that I use since 10 months.

Thanks

@LucioV

It saddens me that so many useful functions have been deliberately dropped from Connect 2.0 without either consultation or discussion, let alone open debate.

I agree that the ability to reply to messages and to quote from parts of them is useful in an interactive forum although if the move is for Local Connect to become more of a magazine under central control then the standard forum elements will continue to disappear.

Sadly the designers of online systems that have a social network feel to them fail to learn the harsh lessons of what happened to MySpace and why it became a major loss-maker and a deadzone in a matter of a few years thanks to the way it was micromanaged.

@aka_Rὁn I think that the beta testers had the opportunity to raise some doubts on the new UI

@LucioV

Were any of the Beta Testers software engineers or involved in interface quality control I wonder ?

My initial impression was that the change was a bit too ambitious to be rolled out all at once and that most of the earlier functionality should have been left untouched when the format was being revised.

Have you seen any evidence of the QUOTE function being abused ?

I certainly have not but then I only read some of the more technical parts of the forum rather than the showcase or photography areas.

Perhaps I am making far too many comparisons with the way that things work on Facebook although that platform is now also suffering from the way it seems to be tailoring everything now for mobile phones and so intelligent and ongoing conversations are becoming rare.

That's why so many people who  spent years online  are beginning to give up on it now and  are turning their backs on social networking altogether.

It would not surprise me if FB became another MySpace in a matter of a few years.

@JanVanHaver

I see your point about the lengthy quotes.

This could be fixed by limiting the size of the posted quote and allowing the user to delete  the parts of it which were not relevant.

Without any context or continuity the individual comments in a long thread can become very difficult to understand without paging up and down to see who  said what to whom and when.

The other issue of course is that of Local Connect on smartphones.

I've largely given up on phone usage since most of the useful notifications I receive are now posted to my Gmail account and I click on the links there.

Using the tiny virtual keyboards makes it almost impossible to converse with any comfort.

I wonder if the Connect Team will ever make the statistics available for us to see if there is a correlation between high-quality content and desktop usage.

Most of the responses on the Announcements page may be totally "on topic" but how many of them are actually worth reading ... especially since there are so many pages of them ?

I, personally, would very much like to see a LOT more Local Guides posting detailed comments about some of the ideas posted on the IDEA EXCHANGE boarf so as to gain a much more comprehensive view of the pros and cons of each issue in greater detail.

To me, this open sharing of viewpoints is central to the life of any vibrant and open community forum and can help it to become a wellspring of ongoing innovation.

Obviously I had to test this right away 😀
