Limiting photo upload per each place for every user

  • Hello Google team
  • Local Guides

My idea aim to limit the number of photos uploaded /place to only 5 photos for each user .

Why :

1- we may find places with hundreds of photos can you imagine that the user who is looking for the place will see all these photos ?

Of course not it's needs a lot of time but if we allow every local guide to share his best 5 photos only for the place we may have chance to be seen all .

2- some local guides uploaded so many photos to a place just for getting lg points ( which doesn't matter ) far from the quality we expect to be in Google maps .

Thanks for your time

- some refinements suggested by fellow local guides and I agree with them :

1- number of photos may vary according to the nature of the poi

so  photos number can be determined according to the poi category ( some poi need more photos to be covered properly )

2- local guide can upload more than 5 photos but without LG points ( only 25 point for each poi ) So people searching for points will not use photos to gain more points .

3- 360° photos needs more photo upload, may be 10 or 15 per poi to be connected probably.

4- number of photos could be determined according to  LG level so the higher level can upload more photos .

5- photos could be uploaded as 5 photos for menu, 5 for indoor and 5 for outdoor , with a total 15 photo per each poi .

6- In another way in street view app. there is an option in the settings allow you to auto detect faces so , what about using the same thing in the maps algorithm to detect personal photos and selfie photos ?

@ShadySalama

Hey dear friend

Now their is something like your idea already exists

When you answer questions about a place you will got a choice between 2 photos asking about which one is more helpful and the most choosen one put in the top .

This is the same as you mentioned in your post

Thanks dear

@NABILazeez

This question is not really helping from my point of view, I believe we should do a kind of up/down vote for each photo.

Cumlative vote by different LGs, should lead in a big % to have the most appropiate photos to be shown in the first lines.

I agree in principle with this. However, I'd add:

LGs of a higher level could be able to add more, as @AhmedSmart suggests.

We need to encourage voting up and down of each photo, as @ShadySalama mentioned. I feel the current thumbs up icon is largely ignored. Needs to be more prominent. And what does a thumbs up signify? I like the food in the photo or I like the photo quality? Not clear at the moment.

The limit could be set to category, i.e. three shots of atmosphere, four or five of food, three for mobility, etc.

I agree that 100 photos is excessive, but I think 5 is way  too restrictive. Therefore, as it is proposed, I do not favor this suggestion.

If it is decided that a maximum must be applied then I  would favor it be based on level as suggested by @AhmedSmart

Hi @Stuart_C

Hi @Koby

Thanks for your support

I agree with you for the thumb up bottom and it could be the way to put the highest quality photos in top of shown photos of the places.

It's a very good idea indeed.

But regarding total number of photos per each level of lg

The aim of the idea is to give a chance for all lg photos to be seen , as we have now a very large number of lg all over the world and increasing daily so if everyone uploaded 5 photos we will have from 100 photo from 20 lg at least which may reach 200 or 300 photos

As you see this place have actually about 467 photo.

So who can see all these photos?

So we must give chance for all lg photos to be seen .

Also this limitations will prevent some lg from adding huge number of photos for one place aiming to increase lg points regardless the quality.

- Another good point :

What about giving each 360° photo 10 points with a maximum 5 photos per place ?

Thanks for your support and your amazing idea.

Best regards

very good idea! I think it should be further refined, eg categories, because there are certain areas where there would be so few photos.

Hello @NABILazeez,

Based on your idea, while your intentions may be good in combatting poor photo uploads and the limitation of points, this however may unintentionally cause current issues to both existing and future photos.

There are two instances in which imposing a limit on photo uploads can impede representation of the business. The first being massive, multi-faceted parks or listings that have tremendous amounts of details or activities within.

Fairfield Adventure Park is one example. There are multiple playgrounds, walking tracks, obstacle courses, high ropes and even a memorial avenue. To choose only the top five would leave too much detail out, and to leave the rest to other local guides to fill in other features may not be the most appropriate.

Secondly, this can impact the local guide from uploading multiple items from a restaurant. For example, one of my local sushi restaurants Shinobu Sushi is somewhere I've dined in quite often has five photos uploaded from me: one external shopfront, one dining area, and three others their dish. Say if I order a different dish, would I only be able to upload five? Avid photographers who really believe in their skill and their expertise to capsule every little detail might feel constrained if a limit was imposed unto them. I know I would for sure.

What you might be wondering is how to improve photo uploads and to weed out the bad photo submissions. A limit may have mitigate the issue temporarily, but there are more than just one local guide. What needs to be done is to both create an effective reporting system that can eliminate or discourage poor photo uploads whilst maintaining, fostering and appreciating quality uploads, and your thumbs up/down idea might help with this. This also includes NOT penalising good uploads by never allowing them to be made visible to the public (happens to me way too often).

Google's AI is constantly improving, which helps to remove duplicate photos, delink or hide irrelevant photo uploads from their listing and also identify incorrect criteria (e.g. someone uploading a petrol station picture at a McDonald's, yeah I've seen this very recently) at the source of the upload. Therefore, I don't think limiting uploads is the best approach to this situation.

That's my two cents.

Good idea. Now you get the same number of points for your 500th picture of a place as you did for your first picture. My idea is to have picture points start dropping after a couple photos.

Hi Mr. Nabil,

I prefer to have no limit on the number of pictures.

Instead there should be a better way to prevent people uploading pictures from one place in an incorrect place.

I think incorrectly placed photos have worst effect than watching a lot of pictures from the same place provided these photos are correctly placed.

I don't want you to change your mind, just wanted to express a different opinion.
