Delete Hidden Bad Data for Place Names

Dear Reviewer, hope all's well.

In order to clarify suggested edits for place with multiple names, it'd be great to be able to delete wrong names as well as suggest right names.

For example, see this list of McDonald's on Maps in Australia.

Each McDonald's listing should be just named simply: McDonald's

Tons of wrong names on that list and we've already suggested the right name multiple times. We bet even when the right name is accepted and published to Maps, the wrong names will still exist inside the listing.

Please allow suggested edits for deletion of wrong place names alongside suggested edits for correct place names. Bad name data on Maps is currently out of control. Maps is looking very messy. Many brand names are getting watered down by either sabotage, miseducation or bad management.

Kind regards from Osaka78 🙂

Well, @Osaka78forTRUMP, the discussion whether or not place names should be allowed or not has been going on for ages, as far as I know. In the specific case of McDonald's Australia, if I remember correctly, @PaulPavlinovich commented on this topic in a earlier post that there was some agreement between McDonald's and Google.

Some of them indeed have 'd' instead of 'D' or a missing apostrophe, but I consider correcting those to be normal LG work.

But in general you are absolutely right: tons of places need name edits!

Dear @JanVanHaver, hope all's well with you.

The idea proposed here is particularly about user edits of multiple hidden names for places on Maps.

Yes, we agree the conversation about place names is getting old and many times has been resolved in discussion without being broadly implemented on Maps.

Check Flash's comments for the an update and conclusion to the topic you mentioned. (There's definitely universal established guidelines applying to all places on Maps. For all Google Maps guidelines questions we defer to Flash's answers, Maps Help, GMB Help, Maps Terms, Local Guides Help, Local Guides Terms.)

As for manually suggesting edits for all the misnamed places on Maps, it's a time consuming labour of love for many Maps users and Local Guides. Place names is an area where Maps can be improved easily, dramatically and globally. In reality it's definitely improving... slowly. Just automating chains and brands would improve a high percentage of all places and positively impact the remainder.

Thanks Jan for joining in the conversation. Kindest regards from Osaka78 🙂

Thanks, @Osaka78forTRUMP , for sharing that link to the post by @YK1001 on primary and secondary names and his ingenious way of figuring that out. Always fun to learn something new here 🙂

About rules and guidelines in general: they might be clearly defined, but one should also always consider the possibility that they are (no longer) appropriate, as I tried to illustrate in this Idea (which has quite a bit of votes already, so it seems I am not the only one with this view).

Hi @JanVanHaver,

Thanks for tagging me.

It is really interesting to read those old threads.

Regarding Place Naming, I consider there are multiple layers of issues.

1.  Naming Rules

2.  Primary and extra Names

3.  Multi-language issues

4.  Legal Names and "Known as" Names

It is not easy to understand what the Policies are asking us what to do.  (No need to mention multiple policies are contradicting to each other).

Personally, I believe in learning by example.  But I am sure you already know, it is not possible to know what is a good example or which is a bad one.

I can see Naming related topics will continue to fascinate lots of us LocalGuides in the foreseeable future.

Dear @JanVanHaver and @YK1001, hope all's well.

We're feeling a bit like a broken record about this today, anyway, in case you're not sure about any Maps related stuff ask Flash. He can always get you a definite answer.

As for the topic of this idea exchange for Maps, we'd love to see users be able to suggest edits for all the multiple hidden names of places. Can you see the benefits for Maps??

We believe Maps is currently left very messy by incorrect non primary hidden names, because users can only suggest the right name, instead of also removing the wrong names. We bet this causes bad data to remain on millions of places all across Maps.

Thanks again Jan and Sampson for joining in the conversation. Kindest regards from Osaka78 👍

Hello @Osaka78forTRUMP, thank you for sharing this idea with us. It is not something the team is able to implement at this time but we will consider all ideas, regardless of status, in future program iterations.
