Bring back Google MapMaker

For those Local Guides wishing to contribute by adding/editing places and roads, MapMaker was a great tool to make quality and precise edits, which we sadly cannot make anymore with the current version of Google Maps - think of the scores of missing categories, or the impossibility to add or edit a road or the name of a place.

It would be great to restore the now-defunct tool or, if it's too much of work, its functions could be transferred back to Maps along with the old categories now missing (beach, monument, waterfall, etc) plus a few more useful categories (fixed and mobile spots for speed cameras, electric vehicle charging stations etc.) and bring back a few options such as point and polygon drawing (for buildings/parks/rivers/lakes etc) or tools for road edit such as exit label and road category (such as path/railway/cobblestone paved road etc., thus impoving the quality and precision of navigation!), and adding/editing place names making it a truly great mapping tool.

We Local Guides possess a vast knowledge of our areas and are passionate to share this information, so Google should not be afraid to let us add it to its map. Geographic information is free to share (in the EU at least, thanks to the INSPIRE Directive) so there should not be too much concern on Google's side for any copyright infringement.

Hi @FintoCubano. There are no plans to bring Map Maker back, so I will be closing this idea but you are welcome to submit ideas for the individual features you'd like to see in Google Maps or as a Local Guide separately. Thank you.

Hi @TraciC

The title says ''Bring back'' but if you read the text of the post it says that if it's too much of a work to bring it back, some (or all) of the features of MapMaker could be transferred to Maps and explaining the reasons why. Not sure it's a valid reason to close a post? Shall I just start a new one with a different title such as ''Bring back MapMaker's features to Maps''? Would that be OK?

Many thanks.

At least add Mapmaker options to Google Maps to more accurate information to its users . It will helps all editors & users .

We need options like adding secondary name & 3rd name in name section. ie, Butha Petroleum, HP PUMP, HINDUSTAN PETROLEUM etc .

Need options to edit transit layer local names . Most of our local names in maps r wrong in their regional language  .

Please vote, it helps to escalate authority

Believe the suggestion to add second name and third name can help lot in creating a multilevel database for smarter queries.

Thumps up for local names in transit layer.

Hello @Santosimon,

Thank you for sharing, but similar idea had been suggested before and had an answer to it.

For that reason, I am merging it here - Bring back Google MapMaker

@Santosimon given my experience I don't think there's is a point submitting ideas for improving Maps when Google is not keen to listen to us: in the idea they closed I clearly said to ''bring back'' at least the functions of MapMaker. And especially now with the mess the new interface to add/edit a place looks and the closing down of the ''Mapping Your World'' blog in Connect I'm not sure Google is caring to make Maps display accurate information at all, or at least make its editing accurate and straightforward.
