I get prompt following message “Your content violates our policies and isn’t allowed.” , for some of my reviews when I am in my hometown. I usually get all my reviews published when I am not in my hometown town.
If the doom is that I violate, then it should be as easy to mark the violation and guide the LG to correct the content or the picture. What is the ise of creating this kind of nonsense hassles …
I thought that the learning curve for AI was quite fast ….
@I-am-Q if a single photo gets refused by spam protection, the entire review will be hidden too. So, as the first step, I recommend to remove the photo and see, if the text is accepted.
@I-am-Q I am glad it did work and thank you for the feedback.
Google never tells us why the did refuse a text, photo of video. The reason is, that knowledge could be used by criminals to circumvent any of the spam/fraud prevention.
Personally, I gave up trying to understand the details and never attach a photo to the review anymore, but post it directly to the pin.
@I-am-Q I think, this is coincidence. I did read many times here in the forum that local guides including myself are convinced to obey all rules, but wonder why some words or a photo are rejected.
Checking for obeying the rules is one thing, but preventing malicious posts is yet a different story and much more important in times of fake news everywhere. Therefore the AI does not only check a single media or review, but tries to find suspicious patterns by comparing many or all posts of the same user. For example, if there are the same photos in different places. But that can easily lead to wrong refusals.
As I said above, I gave up questioning it, instead a make multiple photos (I don’t make videos) and simply delete one, if it is not published. I do delete those, because I’m afraid too many hidden media might also trigger some anti-spam action … who knows.
For refused text, I spend a little more time, not by trying to understand what the problem caused, but by systematically deleting phrases until it is accepted and than (maybe) adding word by word again.
@I-am-Q , I think @WilfriedB already gave you the most important explanation, but I would like to add some details.
Videos. There is a weird issue about the videos: when you upload a video the check by the AI may take a few hours. During that time the video appears as “against the rules” and the review is not posted. Most of the time once the video is checked it is also posted, and the related review is released and made public.
So a good practice is to wait at least 24 hours before to delete a video flagged as “not appropriate”. I’ve escalated the issue to the team, asking to change the message to “in verification” to reduce the frustration and avoid unnecessary actions.
Regarding the photos we know that sometimes a good content is blocked and the only thing that we can do is to remove it. When this happens normally I delete all the photos, and then I add them one by one, to find the one that is blocking the review.
I know it’s an annoying experience, but actually it is the only procedure that works.
I wish in the future it will be improved.
Also I think you know already that the notification procedure about a not posted review is active only for contents posted in a country of the EU.
If you post contents in another country you will not be notified about the removal
Response
Thank you, it always warms to read positive feedback @WilfriedB
I wrote in one of my posts about “Post Truth” and the fact that everything here on Google and other social media is about trust and confidence. A trust structure needs to be built up so that anyone can after a few years get a status with more trust. For example, I suggested that every entry by newbies must be reviewed by the AI filter, but for each level a LG gets, the percentage of posts reviewed should decrease. Applying such a trust system means that if any LG manages to get up to level 10, they will be treated with a different trust than those at lower levels.
Either way, “post truth” is here to stay and social media must adopt such a methodology that promotes trust. As AI filter acts today, it does exactly the opposite, it discourages even the real and passionate LGs, which is exactly what “post truth” aims to create. That is, assume that the AI filter succeeds in removing a million fake users and 100 real ones. It is easy for an evil AI system to recreate a million fake users, but it is difficult if not impossible to acquire 100 real and passionate users.
If you push it a little harder, it could end up with all the real and passionate LGs giving up and then only a war between the good and the evil AI remains.
This note of mine turned out to be a long and rather boring post, but it is the harsh truth that has been created ever since 2010-2012 that is said to be the start of the epic that has come to be called “post truth”.
Good points and suggestions. thanks @ErmesT , I will wait longer and then try to delete the review and then start again with no photo and add a photo to find out what photo is the one trigging the filter …
My following reviews (added since 5 month) are not published:
@I-am-Q why "try to delete the review and then start again with no photo … "? I would just remove the photos/videos from the review …?
This convinces me more and more not to attach any media to a review anymore, instead posting them directly to the pin. It gives us separate control to the text and each piece of media whether and which one is refused. From the reader’s standpoint, I don’t see any advantage of photos attached to a review neither. I read the text of several reviews and independently of that, I scroll through the media.
@I-am-Q I agree, it should work either way. There are always alternatives to accomplish the same objective and I always try to find the one which is fitting me best.
The other thing, I don’t like with media attached to a review: If you decide to add or delete another photo/video at a later time, Maps always assumes you visited the place again. While we shouldn’t add new media long time after visiting, the need to delete one might come up at any time. For example, I had cases, where a photo became hidden long time after posting it.
It’s so frustrating!! I was just posting pictures of food to go along with my review and it says that it violates policies… which is insane. It’s making the reviewing experience incredibly frustrating when my content, which is just
