The Ganges is not just a river to the Indians. It is treated as mother as its contributions to Indian culture and the economy are unexplainable. Haridwar is considered as the place where from this river enters into the plane land from mountains.
This way of worshiping the river in Haridwar was stared by Pundit Madan Mohan Malviya in 1910s. This is done twice in a day: morning and evening. People in large number gather at the Har-Ki-Pouri ghat, a place in Haridwar at the bank of the river Ganges and view the activities of worshiping using fire flames along with other things and chanting of Sanskrit ‘Mantras’ (sacred utterance, a numinous sound, a syllable, word or phonemes, or group of words) by the prists.
