Worldwide Accessibility Walk - WAW 2023
Hello Local Guides, we (One Accessibility Initiative) are glad to announce the Worldwide Accessibility Walk 2023 edition.
The meet-ups are in commemoration of the annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). This is a United Nations observance which is held on 3rd December annually. The theme for 2023 is: “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities”.
Local Guides and Accessibility Champions all over the world are encouraged to organize a dedicated meet-up (physical or virtual) from 1st to 31st December 2023, in support of persons with disabilities.
Worldwide Accessibility meetup has continued to create global awareness and with the help of the community we can make the world even more accessible, starting from our locality.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Submit a meetup for the period 1st - 9th December. The format should read : Accessible + City - WAW +Year (E.g. Accessible Paris - WAW 2023 ).

Approval: Let us know when your meet-up is posted on Connect and share the link, in order to enlist it.

Share the meetup information on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media handles to attract participants from your community.

Awareness: Explain to the participants what is expected at the accessibility meetup. Tell them the need for inclusiveness and invite them to become advocates.
- Kindly notify us as soon as your event is approved to enable us add it to My Map global event list.
FUN FACTS
Accessible walking routes and Wheelchair accessible information are now available on Google Maps.
The year 2030 is the target to make the world accessibility compliant. The 2030 Agenda pledges to “leave no one behind”
More than one billion people live with some form of disability.
Over 100 million disabled persons are children.
170 countries have signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
Local Guides have added over I billion accessibility information on Google Maps.
You can now find disabled-owned business on Google Maps.
NOT SURE WHAT TO DO?
Some people may not know what to look out for, so here is what do.
Physical Mee-tup:
Take your normal photos of buildings, restaurants, foods and nature.
Then look out for accessibility signs, wheelchair ramps, elevators, escalators, public address systems, Braille on doors/buttons, toilets and other inclusive features.
Include this information as part of your review with photos/videos on Google Maps.
Virtual Meet-up
Invite an Accessibility Champion or public official to discuss accessibility and inclusive laws in your city.
Conduct accessibility quiz, trivia etc
Discuss past accessibility meet-ups and trends
Other activities:
Edit your reviews to include if the place has any accessibility provisions
Answer accessibility questions on Google Maps
Create a list of the accessible places you visited.

LOCAL GUIDES ONE ACCESSIBILITY INITIATIVE
After the 2018 WAW, we formed One Accessibility Initiative to help advocate for accessibility in our various communities. We have over 30 volunteers in five continents, hosted over 100 meet-ups, interviewed top accessibility experts around the world. The One Accessibility team has also hosted monthly webinars and written articles in “Accessibility Uncovered” series for over 130 weeks. Our activities have enlightened many Local Guides to become more inclusive and inspired others to become accessibility champions.
We call on everyone to be an Accessibility Hero! Join our campaign to make the world accessible for everyone everywhere. Let’s leave no one behind.
