Worldwide Accessibility Walk [WAW] 2019

Hello LGs, we are glad to announce the Worldwide Accessibility Walk 2019 edition.

The meet-ups are in commemoration of the annual International Day of Persons with Disability. This is a United Nations observance which is held 3rd December annually.

Local Guides all over the world are encouraged to organize a dedicated meet-up from 1st to 9th December 2019, in support of our differently abled citizens.

World-wide Accessibility meetup, inspired by @TraciC has continued to create global awareness and with the help of the community we can make the world more inclusive

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

  1. Submit a meetup for the period 1st - 9th December. The format should read :: Accessible + Your City (E.g. Accessible San Jose ).

  2. Approval: Let us know when your meet-up is approved,in order to enlist it.

  3. Share the meetup information on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media handles to attract participants from your community.

  4. Awareness: Explain to the participants what is expected at the accessibility meetup. Tell them the need for inclusiveness and invite them to become advocates.

  • Kindly notify us as soon as your event is approved to enable us add it to the list of communities. We hope to see everyone join us to make the world more inclusive for the able and differently able.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The year 2030 is the target to make the world accessibility compliant? The 2030 Agenda pledges to “leave no one behind”
*More than one billion people live with some form of disability.
*80% of all people with disabilities live in a developing countries.
*160 countries have signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

NOT SURE WHAT TO DO?
Some people may not know what to look out for, so here is what do.
-Take your normal photos of buildings, restaurants, foods and nature.
-Then look out for accessibility sign, wheelchair ramps, elevators escalators, public address systems, Braille on doors/buttons and other features.

  • Answer accessibility questions on Google Maps
-Include this information as part of your review with photos.
-Create a list of the accessible places you visited. QED.

See some past meetups here.

Photos will be collated in the WAW 2019 Album. At the end of December, we would see the cities that are truly accessible. Let’s WAW the world!

If you do have any questions or comment feel free to post in the reply box below. Be an Accessibility Hero! Let’s leave no one behind.

Great seeing this take shape @EmekaUlor , with @IlankovanT and all of the awesome LG A11y Champions! Last week, @brittanyjomiller , @user_not_found and I met withUNICEF Disability and Inclusion team in NYC, about ways to increase A11y awareness worldwide. So of course we told them about the AccessibilityUncovered project, and will encourage them to sign up for WAW19 too! There’s an Azerbaijan contingent that’s especially motivated, and perhaps other places too. Onward!
