Melbourne, Australia with Thomas Hayes
Thomas put together a walk starting at the Arts District of Melbourne and progressing along the waterfront on Southbank following the Yarra River visiting a number of interesting locations on the walk. The walk crossed the river and returned via the iconic Flinders Lane to the start point of the second walk of the day.Thomas is a Local Guide who loves photography, discovering new music and great coffee.
Thomas says: The walk was great, there was a fantastic group of people who came along.
We started at the State Theatre, Moved on to the Princess Bridge, through Southbank and the shadows and highlights then on to Crown and then back along Flinders Street ending at Federation Square.
We all had a great time and enjoyed it a lot, can’t wait till the next one!
Perth, Australia with Rob Masters & Alicia Smith
I’ve known Rob through g+ for a few years and was chuffed when he and Alicia decided to lead a walk. I know the feeling of weather reducing the turn out, after all I’m from Melbourne. Perth is a great city, for so long considered the smaller cousin of the Eastern cities she has grown to be a vibrant metropolis in her own right.

She likes SF conventions, movies, cooking, birdwatching, reading, roleplaying, photography, boardgaming, KoL, paddling her pedal powered kayak and riding her Me-Mover Fit. She shoots with a mix of smartphone, Samsung NX, and Nikon P900.https://plus.google.com/+AliciaSmith-leeceRob Masters is a *nix sysadmin, and all-round geek. His hobbies are suspiciously similar to those of Alicia, but with less KoL, and more hacking raspberry pi computers. He mainly shoots Samsung NX, with a smattering
of Nikon P900. He is also the moderator of the West Aussie Photo Walks community on G+.https://plus.google.com/+RobMastersThey both also take part in (and help moderate) the G+ Weekly Photo Project.
How the walk went:Despite an OK response prior to the event (10-15 expected), the threat of thunderstorms kept many people away, and we ended up with just four turning up (although apparently someone else did arrive after we’d departed on the walk and could not find us).
That said, the four of us had a great time, starting with a rainbow behind the P.S. Decoy, and then hunting the various sights of South Perth, and catching the edge of the smallest rain shower any of us had ever seen. You could clearly see the complete footprint! We were treated to dolphins playing the in shallows, a flyby of vintage biplanes, extraordinary skies, and a stunning sunset to round things off. We found it ever challenging deciding what to shoot and what to pass over, but even so, as sunset approached, most of us started to run out of ‘film’, and could only curse in frustration! It made for a fantastic learning experience for all of us, no matter if we were shooting mirrorless, compact, or smartphone.
Nairobi, Kenya with Robert Opiyo
The event was successful with 15 people attending out of the 19 who RSVP’d. 7 of the guests were non-local guides who are now part of the community and 5 have been added to the local Whatsapp group. The group spent 3 hours on Sunday afternoon covering the central district capturing the empty streets and being questioned by guards about what we were doing. A couple of people on the streets asked for us to take their photo and two building guards didn’t permit us to take photos of the building (some Local Guides took stealthy shots).
Initially, we had concerns about getting a permit to shoot in the City due to how much it costs (USD 130+). We managed to get it sorted, however, in the future we’ll plan better with the rest of the team on how to cover it.
Robert Ouko Opiyo (https://about.me/rob.ao) is a Media Associate at Andela, He specialises in telling the Andela story in Kenya through photos and videos. His photography skills grew while shooting the local skateboarding community and working freelance. Now, He enjoys capturing fun candid moments.

Comilla, Bangladesh with Shafiul Bashar
Shafiul gave us a glimpse into his culture when his time table for the day included prayer and food. I really enjoyed seeing the photos from Comilla, such a beautiful looking place with historic places, forests and places to eat. A big walk with a group of vibrant young people sharing their passion for mapping and photography.
Shafiul started out with 8 people at Rupban Mura where they got to know one another and discussed the 36 concept before starting out on their walk. In the afternoon they were joined by another ten and spent the rest of the day making more images.
It is quite amazing that something made by humans has survived since the 8th century, through Local Guides I’ve been lucky enough to see it through the eyes of Shaiful and the other Comilla Local Guides.

Kansas City, Kansas, United States of America with William Rock
The Kansas City walk was run by William Rock moderator of (one of the three?) Kansas City Local Guides communities. This was his second meetup and was a huge success with both attendees and the store managers within the Prairiefire Shopping Mall.
5 people joined the walk and spent the day with the stores in the mall. They enjoyed a drone photography demonstration from Rob Scutti. The group got to go to a couple of restricted areas which they enjoyed.
William is a true geek in every way possible, he enjoys technology and feels he is obligated to keep companies safe online and help them grow. He is a Level 5 Local Guide.
Tokyo, Japan with Gyuzel Sapyazova
Gyuzel had one of those days that photowalk organisers dread, no-one showed up, but guess what? She walked anyway. That is the spirit of a Local Guide. Good on you Gyuzel. I’m really glad that Gyuzel didn’t give up and you know what? The guy writing this who has organised hundreds of walks has had a few fizzers where I was the only one. In her message to me Gyuzel was already analysing what went wrong and wanting to learn more about organising a walk. There is some reference material that might be helpful for next time on my blogPhotographers Study.Gyuzel was born in Uzbekistan and has been living in Japan for the last 9 years.
