World Post Day is celebrated annually on 9th October. In 1969, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) during its congress in Tokyo, declared the day to commemorate the anniversary of the union. The Universal Postal Union (UPU) was formed in 1874. UPU was founded in Bern, the capital of Switzerland.

World Post Day is aimed at creating more awareness on the impact of postal services in the lives of people be it in private and business sectors.

There are over 150 countries that make up the UPU and they join in marking this event every year.

Everyday, millions of people receive their postcards, mails, money, ballot and other important documents through the post. From rural areas to city centres, millions of items move from one point to the other in order to serve the people.

As Local Guides postal services also play important role in our journey. Some of us receive perks especially the popular socks via post office. During Connect Live and Local Guides events members were able to send post cards to families and friends at no cost. This is one way of supporting postal services across several countries. Postage stamps are bought to ensure the postcards are delivered, the revenue from the stamps therefore contribute to the running of the system and payment of employees.

Individuals and organizations are marking the day by hosting various events like letter writing competition, teaching children how to post mails, collecting stamps and more.

To mark the #worldpostday Local Guides can make a list of post offices in your city or check if the post office nearest to you is properly mapped.

I am a fan of the traditional Post. As a child, my dad wrote letters to me and I send my reply through post. Our family have a post office box in my hometown since 1980s and we still have it functional. My late grandfather acquired the post then my hand at a point was funding it, now I am taken over the box and hope to pass it on.

The post has been a blessing to me. I have received several items from the box. Money, books, shirts, compact discs, wristwatch, toys, dividend warrants, share certificates, invitation, letters and post cards. One of the favourite post card I received recently was from a fellow Local Guide from Australia @PaulPavlinovich

Now a days due to mobile and internet communication Red Box rarely found on streets that are found in 90s.

I am missing those days so much because my father was in indian military and the only way to communicate with him is via postal services.

I was born in the decade when the Indian Postal Service was slowly turning its existence into history.Yes, it was changing in history because the Indian Postal Service was founded on 1 October 1854 during the English regime and at that time the Postal Department was mainly providing corresponding services across India. Telephone and fax service had also started, but in the village, the people used to have one or two and the service was not so cheap that all classes of people could use. However, over time, the Indian Postal Department has started the traditional correspondence as well as money order, commercial correspondence, government correspondence etc.

Although I was born in the nineties, reading and writing started in the 21th century. Today, when I remember days of childhood i remember that old man riding on bicycle, who wore a khaki uniform, took a bag of khaki on his shoulder and wearing khaki cap on his forehead was often Seen in village towns. Sometimes distributing the money of money order at someone’s place, sometimes asking address of someone’s house**.** If there was a treasure of uncountable happiness in his bag, then sometimes there would be a lot of sorrow too.

My father was in the border security force and there was a curtain system in the village.So whenever my mother wrote a letter, it was my responsibility to stick a rupee postage stamp on that letter and hand it to it in a red box that is letter box. Whenever I went to post a letter, I used to get ten rupees and very clear math was a postage stamp of five rupees and the rest was a samosa (sweet or snacks) of five rupees. There were many times in the village that an old man would have handed over the letter in his hand because of the weakness of his eyes, many times because of not being edu****cated. I had come to read, so I would have read it quickly. How relaxed it gives to know the words of our own people’s heart. I got to know it only by reading the letters of people and seeing the glow of their faces.

The age increased gradually and that old man’s coming to the village is not just equal. Yes, Bharat sanchar nigam Limited had started the mobile phone service. Although the network was found at a high place, it was said. Mobile had now took place of letter writting. Now No one says in the village to read the letter and recite it. What a golden moments of letters, maybe one day I will also write a letter to someone without telling them.

Very cool post, @EmekaUlor - interesting to learn about the post in Lagos and how much of a necessity it is for your community. I remember being younger and always being jealous of my older siblings who would receive mail and waiting for my time. Now I get mail often but it’s mostly just bills . Nonetheless, I absolutely love and respect and US Postal Service for their dedication to our country, especially considering what has been going on recently.

Some of my favorite pieces of mail I’ve sent and received would be the postcards from our annual Local Guides summits!
