Woodblock Printing

A snippet of wooden block printing. Read below for more details.

Fascinating and historical #Jaipur is the capital city of India’s most decorated state, Rajasthan. The city palace (seen on top of the mountain) continues to house the former royal family. The city is on the tentative list of World Heritage Cities. To my luck, it is only about 250kms from my home town (New Delhi) and I often find myself in this vibrant city.

Another artist working on a different design. He is printing the first layer of the design. So focused! He was fully engrossed in precisely printing this butterfly design and gladly wasn’t bothered by my presence and unending questions.

All of their designs are multi-layered and requires precision. First the design is drawn on a paper and then it gets carved layer by layer on multiple wooden blocks as per the design. Everything is handmade from designing on paper to carving the designs on the wood, from making colours to the final printing. Only the textile is sourced through various vendors. In the image above, a colleague of the artist who printed the first layer, is printing the second layer, filling a colour within the outlined butterfly.

Hi @RavneetOberoi and welcome to Connect!

Thank you very much for sharing your first post! This type of printing is simply amazing! I admire the talent of these artists and I cannot imagine how much time and dedication does this work require. Are these pieces of art used for producing clothes?

Since you’re new to the community, feel free to introduce yourself and learn about many other Local Guides in our monthly topic Introduce Yourself - March 2019. Thank you for joining us! I’m looking forward to your next great post!

Thank you Saurabh

Hi RadieN,

Yes! these artists sell the textile to local manufacturing units and designers who transform it to various wearable products. As this was my 1st post, I had no clue that one cannot edit after publishing and hence a lot of content (majorly Videos) couldn’t get on this post. I shall write another post with more details and videos as a second part to this one.

Thank you for the warm welcome  and for sharing the link to ‘Introduce Yourself’.

@ratanrateria Thank you so much. I have some more content on a few of India specific arts and craft. You have motivated me to compile them for a story. Thank you again!

@RavneetOberoi lovely post brother kudos to you. But i don’t think that City palace is in the top of the mountain and that must be Amber fort or Nahargarh fort if I’m not wrong . Because city palace is located within the Pink City near to Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal.

@VickyKrish you’re right that’s Amber Fort on top of the mountain but What I meant in my write up doesn’t mean the actual city palace it means a palace on top of the mountain in a city. It could be any palace, in this case Amber Palace.
