Wonders of India - 5 - Qutub Minar (New Delhi)

Dear friends,

Here I’m presenting my fifth article under my series “Wonders of India”. All articles under this series showcase some unique and interesting facts about different places in India.

Here we go …

Qutub Minar (New Delhi)

It is a gigantic vertical structure built entirely of bricks. It is about 240 feet high and was built around in 12th century.

Some other structures are also built in this complex – like Quwwut-ul-Islam Mosque and Alai Darwaza gate.

Some of its interesting facts are –

  1. It is the tallest brick minaret in the world. (That too so old !!!)
  2. It is observed as “Tower of Victory” – and was constructed to mark the end of Hindu rule.
  3. It has survived a great lightning disaster – by which its only top floor was damaged. That too was built in the later time period.
  4. There are 379 spiral stairs to reach the top.
  5. Now, it is not allowed to enter inside the minaret – because of security reasons.
  6. Most interesting fact – There is a 2000 years old iron pillar inside the complex that has not rusted till now.

Qutub Minar

Here are the photographs I took during my visit - I wanted to click evening & night shots of this monument from very long …

You must visit this place (esp. in evening) if you happen to be in New Delhi …

Wow @Tushar18 . The Qutub Minar at night is amazing. Your photos are so clear and the angle you used, looking up, really helps me to appreciate the size of this huge, brick tower. Thank you also for your well written post. It was so interesting to read all those facts. Keep up the great work!

Hi @JustineE ,

Thank you very much for your kind words. It means a lot

As there was huge crowd at this monument, I had to wait for quite some time to get the best shot. (Like we say - good things don’t come so easily … :grinning: )

Hi @Nyainurjanah ,

The change of colour in the monument is because of change in lighting effect as the time changes from evening to night. :slightly_smiling_face:

Superb captures @Tushar18

I really liked all your captures.

Thanks for sharing.
