Here I’m again with the fourth article of my series “Wonders of India”. As I told earlier, the series is all about showcasing those unique and wonderful places about which many people don’t know about. Let’s begin.
Thread Garden (Ooty)
This place showcases a garden of beautiful flowers – but they are not the real ones. Instead, they are made artificially with the help of threads.
Yes, this is the only type of garden in the world where flowers, leaves, buds, etc. are made with the threads – means they can’t die away.
This was prepared by an Indian professor Antony Joseph and his team of 50 specially-trained artists for 12 years. No needle and special machinery was used in this process.
The aim was simple – to preserve the embroidery skills of the labour and showcase to the world their special talent.
Unfortunately, very few people visit this place – as it is not much famous. I’m here requesting everyone who are going to Ooty, to must visit this place.
Here are some of the pictures I took during my visit to this place.
Thanks for sharing about the Thread Garden - what a great place to visit in India. Everything looks so real, I can’t imagine how much time was spent to make all the plants. How much does it cost to see it?
Now that you’ve shared the garden on Connect, I am sure that many Local Guides will visit it.
Oh wow @Tushar18 … my family and I have visited Ooty so many times and had never heard of this. Thank you for sharing this. As a gardening enthusiast I have learnt a few flowers or two and I can see how similar they are to the real ones. Hats off to the people who have spent their time and efforts in this beautiful art. I’ll save this place on my maps!
Thank you very much for taking interest in this place. Yes, even I was amazed to see that those flowers and leaves were looking so real. I saw one woman weaving threads to make such artificial flowers, but could not take the picture. Actually, I was in a hurry when I came here.
Yeah, it took a lot of time to build this artificial park - around 12 years - as I mentioned.
The cost is very cheap - Rs 20 for visiting, and another Rs 20 for taking pictures. All in all, around half USD for visiting and taking photos.
I also hope that many people should visit here, as it also conveys the message of respecting artisans. I don’t want such art & crafts to get vanish till the time our generations get older.
Yes, the makers of this garden are the artists - who have preserved this art from generations. Its so glad to see that they are doing this effort without any pain.
