We recently launched a summer photo challengeon Connect, but since it is still winter in the Southern Hemisphere, we decided to start a second challenge, following @OliverKIWI 'ssuggestion (thanks, Oliver!). Just like in the summer photo challenge, all Local Guides are welcome to take part, even if it’s summer where you are.
The theme is: Your definition of winter through a photo.
If you want to participate, here are the rules, which are the same as with the summer photo challenge:
Every Local Guide should share only one original photo that represents their idea of winter in the comments below.
The image should be horizontal (or landscape).
Please describe with a few sentences why you decided to share that particular photo. Where did you take it? What does it mean to you? What device did you use?
Feel free to enter with a photo you created specifically for this challenge, or one that you have already shared on Google Maps. If you share your own photo from Google Maps, make sure to link the location.
Submissions are welcome through the end of winter (September 22).
The team will look for originality, and we will take into consideration comments and likes the participants received from the community.
Once again, Local Guides can also nominate their favorite entry using the Local Guides Nomination Form. How to do it? From the “Is there a specific feature you’re nominating them for?” drop-down menu in the nomination form select “Other.” Then, in the “Tell us what makes them special and why we should feature them on Connect” field add a link to the comment with the photo you want to nominate and let us know why you chose it. To get a direct link to a comment, all you have to do is click on the three dots at the bottom left-hand corner of the comment and select “Permalink.” The page will refresh, and the generated URL at the top will lead straight to the photo comment you wish to nominate. Copy that link and paste it in the field mentioned above.
Just like with the summer photo challenge, three of the best photos will be featured on Connect and might even be featured on our social media channels. Without further ado, take your camera of choice and let the challenge begin!
Note: We strongly recommend that you follow your local guidelines for traveling and maintaining a safe distance in public spaces.
Winter is my favorite session. Winter means for me a foggy environment, lots of festivals, village journey, traditional foods, cake, and various flowers.

Winter is always related to cold but for me, winter means warmth, because is that time of the year when you gather with all your friends and family in a lot of celebrations.
I took this photo in Parque Bicentenario Metepec, in December 2015, I was running at 7 am (really early for me haha), and when I saw that color on the clouds I had to stop and take a photo, yeah it’s not the best photo, but when I see it I remember that moment, colors were way more intense.
I think winter is like a sunrise, is the beginning of something new, a great year.
Hello @KlaudiyaG , I want to join this challenge by sharing with you and all the Local Guides a photo of a winter landscape.
After reading your post, I looked through my photo archives and unfortunately found only one album of winter photos taken by a Sony DSC-HX300 camera in the Pirin Golf complex near Bansko in Bulgaria.
I chose this winter photo from the album, which I think is the most appropriate for this occasion. The photo is not impressive, but it is still a winter photo with a lot of snow Bulgaria has a unique location, where our four seasons are literal - spring, summer, autumn and winter. Summer reaches +40 degrees and winter -15/20 degrees Celsius.
This photo clearly represents my definition of winter, cold and snow. I took that photo in Cambridge, Massachusetts last year. I took it with the Iphone 7 while walking home. I decided to take it because my eyes couldn’t believe how beautiful looked the street after snowing and I wanted to keep that memory forever, now when I see that photo it reminds me of how cold it was and the good time I spent there.
Thanks for reading.
I was on a solo road trip and stopped over to have a break at a hot spring spa hotel called Kamihoro in Hokkaido, Prefecture. It was minus 15 degrees C outside the tub but it still felt great having an ice cold beer while relaxing in this hot tub. What’s unique about this part of Hokkaido is that even in the daytime you can hear wolves howling in the flurry. Epic!
I would like to thank @KlaudiyaG for this post and if you want to participate follow the instructions below:

Yay! Thank you @KlaudiyaG - just to celebrate the diversity and dispersion:) In Oceania, and some part of South America and Africa, we are now in Winter!
I have Sled Dog Prep to submit. I was in Ester, Alaska earlier this year, right in the middle of winter. I had a dog sled experience and the video here shows how excited the dogs get! When they are prepped for a run, they go crazy with excitement at the prospect of getting out there.
Unlike me…I dont run, unless there’s an emergency or its for food, ha! ?
The image here is the HQ of the team + dogs. Im in the middle of the figure 8 ( a dog is sniffing me) which was made with the sleds. Video done with Iphone 11 Pro + DJI Osmo 3 gimbal. Aerial shot is with DJI Platinum pro ??
Im really happy to add my photo. this shot I took at the amazing road call Transfăgărășan, Romania while I did road trip from Serbia to Romania. I stop at the top and run out of the car to try and catch the moment. I like the outcome… stunning landscape combine with fantastic atmosphere. I simply love moments like that. I use my old and favorite camera Nikon D90 18-200.
