Wine festival celebration

In Bulgaria, the 14th of February marks the day of the saint Trifon Zarezan, patron of vines and wine. Traditionally on that day, the grape vines are being pruned and later the people enjoy festivities surrounding wine making and drinking.

On that day I enjoyed the celebrations organized at Bessa Valey Winery. A relatively small local winery which nonetheless is making award-winning wines.

The celebrations started outside with a demonstration of traditional Bulgarian folk dancing. The performers were dressed in typical Bulgarian garments and were dancing to the sounds of bagpipes and mandolines. A great thing to see in itself.

Later we were guided inside the winery to see the barrels of wine aging as well as how the new wine was being made. It was interesting to see how the old traditions of winemaking were seamlessly merged with modern technology and equipment.

The day concluded with wine tasting and socializing.

If you ever find yourself in Bulgaria around this date, you can treat yourself to a similar experience at a nearby winery.
